Making Your RP Blog More Attractive to Potential Partners
(In other words: How to keep people’s interest in roleplaying with you once they arrive at your blog)
Indie roleplaying (for the most part) comes down to personal preference and effort, but if you follow these basic guidelines, you’ll have an easier time convincing potential partners to stick around once they find your blog!
1) Pick out a nice theme for your blog. Most of us are visual creatures. If you take the time to outfit your blog with a theme (not the tumblr default), it shows that you care, that you put effort into the overall appearance and efficiency of your blog (and therefore probably will put effort into your roleplaying!). Where are these “themes”? you ask. [ here are 2 sources to get you started: theme-hunter, dear-indies ]
2) If you’re looking to play mature themes, particularly smut, please state your age or age range somewhere right on your main page (or at least in a rules/guidelines page that will be mentioned next). A lot of roleplayers will leave your blog, if they’re looking to play mature themes and they cannot find any indication of how old you are. This is largely a legal issue for people who are of age vs people who are underage, so do not lie about this just to get partners. How should I state my age then? you ask. [ ex. mun/muse(s) are 18+ , mun is 21+, mun is of age, mun is -insert your exact age if you want- ] If you’re only looking for partners within a certain age range, state that as well!
3) Create a list of rules/guidelines and link to it. Basically, let people know what your expectations are and what your limits are right off the bat. Your list doesn’t have to be exhaustive. Probably, the shorter the list, the better. For example:
Mun and Muses are of age. (OR Mun is under age.)
I will rp themes such as [insert preferences]
I will not rp the following themes [insert limits, if any]
I will drop threads if you god mod or meta game
These are triggers that I would like you to tag/that I tag [insert triggers, if any]
Themes or plots I really want to play [insert list]
This blog is always accepting new partners / is selective / is 1x1.
This is a sample of my writing (*important for a brand new blog or just to show off your best stuff*)
4) Create a page that (at the very least) lists basic details about your muse(s). Pictures, icons, gifs of your faceclaimes are all great. Because again, we are largely visual creatures. But don’t stop there. Some people prefer to read in-depth bios, some people are cool to roll with bullet points. Do what you feel is best in terms of giving background or personality information, but give people something to work with. Basics that you should offer: a) your muse(s) name, b) age/age range, c) brief personality or personality traits, d) occupation, e) orientation/gender identity, f) whatever else you feel is important.
5) Make sure that your ask box is not only working, but is accessible. Same goes for your theme/links. People can’t message you, if your ask box is shut off. So, turn it on. People can’t navigate your page successfully, if something is off with the theme or your linking. Make sure that the theme you choose leaves your links/buttons fully functional. Make sure your links go to the right places!
6) Show off your writing talent. Even if your blog is a fetus and you just signed up. Find a way to post a sample of your writing somewhere! If I were a roleplayer coming to your page for the first time, I would look to see if our writing styles are compatible. Being a new blog is not really a good excuse for not showing your work and might make people doubt the credibility of your blog. @kenocka raises a good point, your writing ability can be reflected in how you word a character biography, in lieu of a stand-alone writing sample.
