I was just reading this article about cats in Japanese folklore which mentions that the first cats were introduced to Japan in the 9th century CE (and includes the Emperor’s delightful observations of his new cat). But now I’m wondering - agriculture was introduced to Japan much earlier by the Yayoi culture, around 1000-800 BCE. That’s at least sixteen hundred years in which the Japanese had agriculture but didn’t have cats. So how were they keeping the rats and mice out of their granaries? Ferrets? Terriers? Magical girl anime mascots?

Faced with similar issues the Polynesians (or at least the Māori) elevated their food storage above the ground on poles, but that can’t have been a perfect solution.

The Native Americans must have had similar issues - the Inca were famed for their storehouses, which were definitely at ground level - so how did they deal with it?

I hope someone knows because now this is going to bug me until I find out.

I'd like to share with y'all a project I've poured my heart and soul into over the last couple of years: a database cataloguing every single older queer science fiction book I've managed to track down, consisting of just over 200 titles with LGBT characters/themes & by LGBT authors, spanning over a century (1880-2000) 🚀

The database can be filtered by representation, subgenre, whether the book is currently in print, and more; additionally, it includes my own ratings & brief thoughts on the ones i have read, if anyone needs a suggestion on places to start!
