While I hope you'll forgive me for two beer posters in a row on these modules, I had to share this iconic Absolut ad that I'd learned about earlier in the year. See, Absolut as a Swedish company was down in sales when compared to their competitors when they first start selling in the United States and needed a big gusto to get them out into the market. So some genius hatched the brilliant idea to "hide" Absolut bottles into their marketing, which always read "Absolut" (followed by almost any other word). These images have become "absolutely" iconic, and are a very clever way to create both a memorable ad as well as a great piece of design. For more great Absolut ads, check out here
I'm not afraid to admit it. As a teenage college girl, I love me some Lululemon, and when I realized this design, I loved the brand even more. See, on the left is Lululemons branding, which is said by creators to be reminiscent of an "A". While the Lululemon tags are iconic in their own right (think of the small logo printed on the top of the back of their leggings), they incorporated the logo right into their clothing as well. You can see that curved design on the shirt on the right, a shirt that I actually own myself, which is how I first realized it. While it's not necessarily a big piece of text that proudly and loudly displays the name of the brand, it's subtle and instantly recognizable. I'm not crazy about big, loud brands (think Supreme) but I'm always able to recognize a piece of Lululemon clothing for its subtle yet distinctive style, and of course, the logo "hidden" into the clothing.

This piece, which bears the text "You have a home here" is literal in its delivery, clearly stating its purpose to make readers feel welcome at MSU. The backing element is the house shape above the text, further bringing the idea of welcomeness and openness.
The same piece carries more of an emotional weight when you look deeper than the text and house element. The text that makes up the house is filled with text like "gender expression", "first generation background", and "individuality". Yes, you have a home here, but here is the reason why you have a home here. I passed this flyer a lot and never stopped to look deeper than the text and the house, but I was touched to learn the emotional meaning behind it.
These two icons displayed on this door do their job and do their job well, as you are clearly able to discern what this room's use is (lest you walk in thinking it's a meeting space). You automatically assume what this sign is telling you without it needing text.
Now, the next piece is similar, however, it's something you have to learn to understand that a bell would mean alarm. (I wish the text wasn't there but alas). Even without the text, one would assume that pressing that button would alert help to your location, but it's something that you'd have to learn means "alarm", unlike the toilet sign.
This symbol displayed proudly on my computer represents MSU's past as "Michigan Agricultural College" before it changed its name to the one we know and love today. The three letters, MAC, are positioned together to create an overlapping design, one that I thought to be perfect for this assignment, as when I first began studying here, I saw this symbol and was unsure of what it could mean (obviously something MSU related but how?) until someone explained to me the history f the design.
Mount Rushmore, an iconic image of American history, has been used many times to depict the American spirit, but it is a little funny to me that it's promoting Guinness, a well-known Irish beer. Regardless, this sign has been printed onto metal for an even older look, one that reminds you of an older dive bar type of joint with a modern twist and some toucans. I'd put that in my house somewhere!

On the cover of this book is a colorful graphic with little lines repeated over and over to give the impression of movement across the page.
The bold header with a different color than the rest of the text implies that you should read that section first before continuing on.
The letter "f" has an ascender.
The letter "y" has a descender.
The letter "o" has a counter.
The letter "H" has a crossbar.
This funky font has a large x-height, which is boosted by certain letters being elevated with a bar underneath. The letter that especially stands out is the "i" when compared to the letter "W" in the word "without"
Especially when compared to the font on the school bus element, the text on the right of the image has a smaller x-height.
This font is a simple, easy-to-read script that would work in a variety of settings and usages.
This memorial sign for the Oxford tragedy portrays the word "strong" where the O has been transformed into the school's logo O, with the meaning being that the Oxford schools are strong.

The blue and the orange on the Nalgene water bottle are complimentary colors and give off a pleasant, colorful vibe.
The orange, green, and yellow colors are analogous and create a vibrant, eye-catching design that works well with the gaming theme.
The cool colors of purple and blue give a calm, easy feeling that compliments a simple design.
Red, orange, and yellow are warm colors that give off a fiery feeling, especially when combined with the background that is full of movement.
The colorful images on the right-hand side draw your eyes to the pictures, while the yellow text on the left hand brings your attention back to the text describing the information.
While the main header "NYC" catches your attention at first, the continuity of the text "walking tours" draws your eye down the length of the page
In this flyer created to bring attention to the wage gap in Ireland, the person's legs are the background, with your mind filling in the spaces where the legs might go.
In this advertisement for a Hungarian university, the logo is a symbol of the famous Széchenyi Chain Bridge that crosses the Danube River, a feature of Budapest.

The bolded "Vitamin" attracts attention while the unbolded "water" completes the slogan. In addition, the perpendicular text titling "Squeezed lemonade flavor" works well in contrast to the slogan.
The bolded "Buenos Aires" text is simple and stands by itself, while the jumble of different states' name draw your eyes across the piece and keep you looking.
When compared to the sans serif of the "MSU CAL", the bolded serif of the drop-in advising stands out on the page and alerts you to the important text.
Similar to the Buenos Aires sign, the crazy meandering streets all converge at the central white line, which is actually the Danube River.
The bolded black Potbelly logo stands out in contrast against the greyish, thin-lined city street artwork.

Graphic design is "the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books."
These five images display graphic design in its truest form- posters, book covers, flyers, etc. All were created with a purpose in mind, but the most important thing that connects them is that they are art.
