Digital Marketing 3.0
The inaugural course of the Entertainment Business Masters program at Full Sail called for me to set goals for each of the courses that were to follow. The goals set for this course, Digital Marketing, involved creating a marketing plan that could be used across many digital mediums for my event production company.  The plan during this course included using resources on Lynda.com, TED Talks and marketing blogs such as Seth Godin’s.
Through coursework and the course text, I have been introduced to various ways of gathering analytics for digital marketing campaigns. I have learned that much of the content online is tracked by keywords such as long tail or short tail phrases. Long tail phrases are a grouping of descriptive words similar to the title or main idea of online content. Short tail phrases are a shorter grouping of words; no more than three words that help readers find closely related online content when used to search. Content producers and digital marketing professionals use Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tools to drive web traffic towards particular sights and content when keywords are used, either long tail or short tail.
In retaking the course, several intricacies contribute to a successful digital marketing campaign. The lessons in social media and digital marketing have reinforced skills that have been taught in other courses. Sites such as www.socialmention.com gave me the tools need to measure the analytics on specified search terms or social media handles. The site gives insight on a brand’s online sentiment rather it be positive, neutral or negative. The analytic tool also measures a term’s reach across the Internet. Skills reinforced during this course will allow me to craft a digital marketing plan to best suit my future business and any other branding projects that may land within my undertaking.
“Customer Service is Marketing.” - Chris Brogan
In remembering this simple concept, business owners will do their best marketing with the way they handle customer issues.

Entertainment Business Masters Program Reflection
Business Plan Development
The Business Plan Development portion of the program began the culmination of all information learned during my experience at Full Sail. This course allowed be to begin drafting my business plan for a live event production company. The pre-development of the business plan allowed me to complete the actual business plan with much more ease than what I had anticipated.
Digital Marketing
Digital marketing is a course I had to retake during the program. During the Mastery portion of this program, I was asked to declare my goals relating to this course, Digital Marketing. My initial goal was to create a digital plan that could be used across several digital mediums. My plan in creating my company’s digital strategy would include visiting www.adage.com, related TED Talks and Seth Godin’s marketing blogs. I have been familiar with Godin’s marketing techniques through his books and blog but I had never explored digital marketing until this course. The coursework and textbook introduced me to the various methods used to track and analyze web content. Much of the content published to the Internet is tracked by a group of keywords; these keywords are described as long tail or short tail. Long tail keywords contain a greater number of descriptive words, often similar to the title or main idea and yield more accurate search results. Short tail key words are typically no more than groups of three keywords that may help you find more closely related content to original content. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tools are used to drive traffic towards particular sites and content when a search is performed using these keywords, both short and long tail. I am retaking this course and upon a second look, I am learning new things relating to digital marketing. The course study of social media and its use in digital marketing also have reinforced lessons taught in previous branding courses. As social media impressions are measured do to mentions of a specific username or hash tag, it is important to brand yourself and your business uniquely. Analyzing the use of a term such as ‘tidal’ on social media will yield many different content results along with a neutral sentiment. Using a more targeted search term such as ‘Tidal Music’ will yield more brand specific results, impressions and sentiments. Using the term ‘Tidal music’ as the search term will yield information about the music service as well as related content found around the Internet. The inclusion or exclusion of a few words or terms can make all the difference when analyzing a digital footprint. Skills learned during this course have given me a greater understanding of the role of digital marketing in a company’s overall marketing campaign. I will take the information gathered in this course to better market myself as a professional and to market my future business. Digital marketing and the internet provides an abundance of new opportunities, individuals and companies must be willing to learn new platforms and audit the platforms to see if it’s the right fit for their audience.
Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution
Upon starting the program at Full Sail, I had decided that publishing is a aspect of the entertainment business I would like to explore professionally. The course taught me the duties of a media publisher though assignments such as writing a query letter. I expected to learn more about music publishing in relation to a digital platform as well as current events and concerns surrounding publishing and distribution. The course helped me to explore the policies of publishers such as TuneCore and Createspace. There are many services that are contributing to the digital music environment helping artists to distribute their craft throughout the world. This course has helped me to realize there is so much more to publishing and distribution.
Advanced Entertainment Law
Prior to starting the course, I set the objective of evaluating popular contracts that are used within the recording industry. I was interested in the increasingly popular 360 Recording Deals as well as recording contracts issued by independent labels. Interest in neither topic directly aligns with my business plan of opening an event production company but I was curious due to the changes within the music industry. I was also interested in examining copyright issues surrounding digital distribution of intellectual property. Copyrights and trademarks are the protections for content creators that allow them to monetize their crafts and creativity. During the course, I learned to identify the legal liabilities that my event production company may be subject to as well as ways to reduce the risks and protect myself as an individual as well my business. The course also introduced me to valuable websites such as caselaw.findlaw.com. This website allows me to research the decisions of cases in many courts that may be pertinent to my business directly or indirectly. During the course, we also completed exercises registering trademarks and registering a business with the Secretary of State. The trademark exercise showed how simple it is to apply for trademark registration with the US Trademark office.
Product and Artist Management
My original goals for the course included researching artist managers such as Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber) and Troy Carter (Lady Gaga’s former manager), instead I had the opportunity to learn more about Sharon Osbourne’s management career. Sharon Osbourne is responsible for her husband Ozzy Osbourne’s solo career after he left his group Black Sabbath. She saw the potential for Ozzy as a solo artist and took the necessary risks to cultivate him as an artist. Sharon also has managed several rock-n-roll acts including her daughter as well as represented her family landing the hit MTV reality show, The Osbournes. This course has helped me to think critically about things I can do to better manage my current career path as well as help determine if I would be interested in artist management. Although my business plan involves live show promotion and production, talent management is an integral component of the promotion business. Although promoters are not artist managers, they deal with many artists, managers as well as work on behalf of an artist to increase ticket sales. The product and artist management was among one of the most enjoyable and informative subject matter courses in the program.
Negotiation and Deal-Making
Negotiations take place when making simple decisions such as where to go for a family dinner.  Individuals present their choices to an opposing group or individual along with their opinion and facts about why this place should be chosen over another.  Our course material, Beyond Reason and Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement without Giving In, introduced several elements needed to prepare for a successful negotiation.  One that particularly stood out to me was the process of creating a BATNA or Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement.  A BATNA is the course of action a party will take in the event they are unable to come up with an amenable agreement with the other party.  In terms of business, the BATNA can result in a relationship that no longer exists or operates at a diminished capacity. The BATNA can also provide provisions for business to carry on as usual until the negotiation can be revisited. The art of a negotiation is used in everyday life and not just in business setting.  Negotiations can take place internally within an individual or organization as well as among multiple parties.  Preparing an argument with the wealth of information as support allows you to craft the negotiation and play towards the best possible outcome. When both parties agree about the reason, they are entering into a negotiation/agreement, the chances of settling on mutual terms increases.  The purpose of a negotiation is to explore all options to find the terms that would best suit all involved.
Entertainment Business Finance
Prior to beginning the course, Entertainment Business Finance was one of the courses I was most nervous about in terms of my success.  Finance is one of the components of business that can scare away many potential entrepreneurs.  This course helped me to better understand some of the requirements needed for successful business funding and use of funds.
The course helped me figure out how to forecast business financials. The chosen textbooks for this course, Entrepreneurial Finance and Rich Dad Poor Dad taught me a great deal about finances, personal and business, that I had not previously understood. The in-depth explanations and analysis of different financial concepts in Entrepreneurial Finance helped me to understand how companies make financial decisions. With decisions involving investments and capital, there are formulas to help business owners to make the most fiscally responsible decision. Rich Dad Poor Dad presented many personal finance concepts that will lend to me becoming a better businesswoman. As an entrepreneur, it is important to have your personal finances in order so that you will be able to cover our personal responsibilities such as a mortgage and loan payments.
Business Storytelling & Brand Development
The main idea behind this course was to teach students how to tell the story of his or her business. Branding is a concept that receives much attention in business but not many understands all components of branding a business. The most important component of branding is the art of business storytelling. Completing exercises essential to the brand development of my business has helped me to understand the importance of business storytelling in creating a compelling brand around a company and product/service. Impactful exercises included conducting a brand audit on industry leaders, AEG Live and Live Nation. I also learned a great deal studying the 22 Immutable Laws of Branding. The Laws included concepts such as The Law of Publicity, The Law of Quality and the Law of Borders. Using these laws has helped me to evaluate the direction in which I’d like to take the branding of my business. The Law of Quality will be one of the most important aspect of branding I can bring to my business. As a live event production company, it will be important that I offer quality services into an already crowded marketplace. Customers and artists will be able to trust that I will produce quality events. The Law of Consistency will also be an important element to incorporate into my branding strategy. It is important that the events I produce are consistent in quality, innovation and good business practices.
Project and Team Management
Project and team management allowed me to further examine my leadership ability. Leading a team or managing a product requires leadership even if one individual solely handles the project. The course was also effective in teaching effective methods for managing a team of people. A major part of being able to manage a team depends on an individual’s ability to work with and understand others. Great project managers and team leaders must be able to motivate members of their team to do that best work at a pace that is respective of deadlines. Motivation comes easier when managers are able to assign proper work assignments due to each team member’s skill set and personality. Project managers should also be able to foresee all of the tasks that come with a project and allot the proper amount of time to finish each task and the project in its entirety. Successful project managers also have to account for the costs of completing a project. Project and team management are skills that are greatly sought after in any industry but are especially important in entertainment industry where there are many moving components to all projects.
Executive Leadership
The executive leadership course at Full Sail helped me to discover the type of leader I am so that I am able to improve my leadership skills by knowing which weaknesses should be targeted. The course text Developing the Leader Within You and 48 Laws of Power giving two different approaches to leadership. As my career progresses, I would like to use my influence to get others in entertainment to use their gifts and talents to serve the community. Service to my community has always been important to me and I believe that an individual can be of service in more ways than just the traditional sense. Entertainers have a reach of influence that transcends beyond the entertainment industry touching politics, consumer goods and several other industries. I hope to use my professional influence to serve my community along with inspiring others to do the same.
Mastery: Personal Development and Leadership
The Mastery course was the first course in the Entertainment Business program at Full Sail. The goal of the course was to introduce students to the goal of the program: mastery. The purpose of the program is to master skills that will allow alums to be successful as professionals and entrepreneurs in the entertainment industry.   The Mastery course prepared me for the duration of the program by introducing me to the Full Sail online educational environment. During the course, I was able to establish that I would keep for the majority of the program with weekly Go-To Sessions, discussion posts and other assignments. I was also able to boost me professional online presence by creating blogs at cheyannewoodyard.blogspot.com and cheyannewoodyard.tumblr.com and reestablishing my twitter presence at @CheyanneJade.

Product and Artist Management
This month’s product and artist management course has been interesting and taught me a great deal about management. As an artist manager, you have to think about more than just the talent management aspect for your client. Great managers are able to plan for product launches, decipher through endorsement deals and much more.
Artist managers are responsible for finding new platforms of exposure for their clients.  As a manager, you want your client to receive as much positive exposure as possible in hopes that it will result in new business opportunities. Managing products and projects require much of the same skill sets as managing talent.
Although promoters are not artist managers, they deal with many artists, managers as well as work on behalf of an artist to increase ticket sales.
At the conclusion of this course, I feel more confident in the direction of my business plan. I also feel confident in my potential to serve as a manager or booking agent.

Negotiation & Deal-Making
In the course material and exercises used in this month’s course, I studied proven tactics that strengthen arguments and negotiations. My original goals for the course included researching entertainment contracts and industry related memos drafted by entertainment attorneys and industry professionals.  Given the course content, I learned that negotiation is important to more than just contracts.  The art of negotiation is lent to more than just contracts and definite business transactions; negotiation is key in daily human interaction.
Entertainment Business Finance
This month’s initial mastery objective of Entertainment Business Finance was to read more business finance related articles, visit the EBSCOhost resource Business Source Complete and to complete Lynda tutorials on business accounting. This month’s course material and content changed the direction of my independent research.
The chosen textbooks for this course, Entrepreneurial Finance and Rich Dad Poor Dad taught me a great deal about finances, personal and business, that I had not previously understood. The in-depth explanations and analysis of different financial concepts in Entrepreneurial Finance helped me to understand how companies makefinancial decisions.
Although I had studied accounting in the past, this course helped to better explain and clarify many financial and accounting concepts. This month’s course also introduced me to many new aspects of financial planning and fiscal responsibility, I now have a greater understanding of what it takes to have a financially secure start-up.
Completing exercises and case studies that mirrored real world scenarios helped me to apply the concepts I was asked to learn through out the course. This course has helped to point me in the right direction when planning for my business idea. I have learned more and explored many concepts different than what I had initially anticipated. With greater exploration of the concepts presented in this course, I am confident in my ability to start and run a successful business.  My initial mastery goals were far exceeded at the conclusion of this course.

Business Storytelling and Brand Development
When asked to set goals for each course in the Masters of Entertainment program, I used course descriptions to set goals that I felt were appropriate for each course. My goals for Business Storytelling and Brand Development were centered around mastering the Adobe Creative Suite. I thought this course was solely about creating logos and other branding images.
Although I have studies marketing and branding in the past, I never really explored business storytelling. This month’s course introduced me to broader aspects of branding. I now understand why some of my favorite brands were successful in capturing my attention and loyalty.
Through the duration of this month’s course, Business Storytelling and Brand Development, I have learned much more about branding than I originally intended. This course gave me the tools needed begin my brainstorming process for the branding of my company as well as a better understanding of effective and deliberate branding. I feel more confident in developing the branding for my business now that I have completed this course.

“The Power of Performing Arts” as delivered by Ben Cameron at TEDxYYC
Art administrator and live-theatre connoisseur, Ben Cameron, delivered a Ted Talk about the importance and power of performing arts.  Cameron, like many living in the digital age consumes music and movies using devices such as iPods and over the Internet. The popularity of the iPod and the availability of digital downloads have changed the structure of the entertainment industry; fans no longer purchase physical albums when digital copies are available for a fraction of the price or can be accessed for free.
Cameron acknowledges his passion for the arts and entertainment along with his adaptation of the ways he consumes art.  As an arts administrator, Cameron states it is important that the theatre and opera rethinks the way each entity interacts with fans. Reassessing the practice of charging theatre patrons $100 per ticket when these are the same persons that download music for $.99 per track was important for many theaters to keep their doors open. Performing artists have reinvented themselves and the way in which they do their jobs. No longer are the days of just stage actors, many actors use their skills to help communities in need such as providing therapeutic releases for prisoners and school children dealing with violence and societal issues.
As an art administrator, Ben Cameron embraced changes in the entertainment industry and though proactively about how he could prepare his theatre for change. Theatre is an aspect of the entertainment business that has experienced little change in interaction with fans since the inception of paid theatre. There are many examples of theaters and operas that are now struggling due to the changing tastes of art patrons. Cameron exhibits bravery in an industry where many follow the notion of “if its not broken, don’t fix it” and applying fixes when it may be too late. Cameron encourages artists to use their talents in non-traditional ways to share the art of theatre with new audiences, teach and heal communities. Art administrators, managers and artists should be able to anticipate changes by studying the landscape of the entertainment industry as a whole and make changes accordingly, Cameron was able to do just that.

Conflict Resolution
Tumblr media
As conflict is natural in human interaction, it can be a distraction in the work place. Although the following conflict resolution policy is to address conflict, we would like to prevent it in the workplace as much as possible.
Team Building
The core team members of Luxe Life Events will participate in annual employee retreats that encourage team building along with occasional volunteer opportunities and non-office related dinner outings. Annual employee retreats will have employees participate in physical activities that require full team participation to complete.
Activities can include ropes courses, kayaking, team quests and expeditions. These activities will serve as a foundation to foster positive working relationships.
Weekly Staff Meetings
Serve as a weekly status meeting to encourage open communication among staff and as an opportunity to address any general issues.
Open Door Policy
All offices at Luxe Life Events must have an open door for at least 75% of the day with the exception of carrying out work functions that may be disruptive to the overall work environment such as conference calls.  An open door means counterparts at Luxe Life may stop in to ask questions or voice any concerns. The benefits of an open door policy include: accessibility, open flow of communication, fast access to information and closer working relationships.
Conflict Resolution
At Luxe Life Events employees are encouraged to address conflict in the following ways:
-        Address conflict as soon as there is an issue.
-        Be specific in addressing the issue.
-        For escalated issues, find a private and neutral space to all parties when addressing conflict.
-        Listen actively to the other party.
-        Work together to find a solution that is amicable to all parties.
-        Agree on a plan of action for communication and interaction moving forward.
-        Report plan of action to GM or Assistant GM when appropriate.
-        If needed, ask for mediation from a neutral party.

Project and Team Management
At the beginning of my journey at Full Sail I set monthly goals for each course. The goals I set for this month’s course included researching the requirements to sit for a project management certification.
This month’s course in Project and Team Management taught me more than just my expectation of effective project management.

Embodying Maxwell Leadership
Prior to beginning the Executive Leadership course at Full Sail I have studied leadership and I have been interested in how I can develop myself as a better leader. John C. Maxwell’s opinions and theories on leadership have repeatedly come up in my studies. I believe that I am in the beginning stages of becoming a Maxwell Leader according to Maxwell’s Developing the Leader Within You.
Although my industry of choice, entertainment, is largely comprised of leaders that subscribe to Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power, I believe that I can remain true to a less aggressive style of leadership. As I hope to lead a successful career in entertainment, I am committed to living a good life where I am good to those around me. When others reflect on my leadership, I would like people speak about how I was able to lead with love and good will.
I hope to be influential to entertainers so that I can influence them to use their reach to spread good will.
I am working on being self-aware of the attitude I project out into the world. My goal is to project a positive attitude regardless of any challenges I may be facing personally or professionally. I believe that having an approachable and positive attitude will gravitate people towards me who will be interested in my opinions. A positive attitude allows many leaders to advance despite any public displays of hardship. Building upon Maxwell’s leadership characteristics will help me to become the leader I aspire to be.
