If this is about Andrew, I think he's definitely very clearly painted as a victim in that movie. He's a victim of abuse by his father, by the tragedy of his mother. I think where the film maybe falls short is in failing to show the hardships of its supporting cast. I think that MBJ's character is meant to be a parallel in that he's also suffering, but he's making the most of it, instead of lashing out and killing spiders and hurting people.

I think I just need to remind my followers (and myself) that my favorite movie is about three dumb teenagers who get superpowers and my favorite fictional character of all time is the one teenager in that movie who is always painted as the villain instead of a victim

It's hard to find fault with any one individual person in Chronicle. They're all trying they're best, and they all screw up in a number of ways. The only person who's perfect and does no wrong is my glorious king Micheal B. Jordan. Why is he in this movie. I think it's telling that Andrew and Matt both have severe issues with socializing. Matt obviously thinks he's better at it than Andrew, and he may well be, but he's still pulling stupid shit out of his ass about philosophy, he's still semi-stalking this one girl, he's still only really got one friend, at least as far as the film is concerned. I don't know, maybe it's true that Matt is better than Andrew, but... I guess we can't see his life. Because it isn't recorded. I think that's a more poetic point. It's very reminiscent of films like Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, and Vengance. These movies are all about how the camera separates us from people. While that isn't necessarily the point of Chronicle, I do think it heavily ties into the real message of the film.

Oh my God. This changes the game. I didn't even consider that you could just outsource issues you have with you fic ideas to community members. If I wanted to write a fic about Taichi reconnecting with Greymon in the digital world in a way where he would never return to the physical world again, I could just ask community members how they would start such a story. This is genuinely eye opening.

I think there's something to be said here for a story that is more in depth with the exploration of a partner Digimon that's trapped in their champion form. Like a timeline where Tai abandons Agumon, only to return to circuit island to find an essentially feral Greymon, one with his capabilities for speech lost, and Tai has to nurse him back to his rookie form, or alternatively, he's just stuck as Greymon now, just like how Gatomon is stuck as Gatomon. It's tough because every digimon story has to contend to some extent with the inevitable return to the real world. Digimon and their partners have to separate eventually anyway no matter what, so I think the only way a story like this would really work is if the Digital world became a sort of afterlife, where there's no chance for Tai to return to the physical realm. This honestly isn't so far off what what the digital world already is. It would be very similar to the spirit realm of avatar.

I've always thought of Digimon's rookie forms as essentially the form that a well taken care of Digimon will rest in. It's only in times of stress where they digivolve. In that case, Gatomon staying in her champion form, is a sign of residual trauma that keeps her stress levels permanently at a point where she's unable to devolve back to rookie. Very sad.
