A beautiful Harvestman I found on some milkweed! One of my absolute favorite creatures 💚 Did you know they are not spiders? And they are NOT VENOMOUS. They are in the Class Arachnida, along with spiders, ticks, mites, scorpions, etc, but are in their own, very distinct Order called Opiliones. They actually are not even related to spiders at all; their closest relatives are mites and scorpions. They have been around for well over 400 million years, and have changed very little over time. They possess no venom glands, and do not make silk (no webs for these guys.) They are able to ingest solids, unlike spiders. They don't have "fangs," but mouthparts that more or less resemble dull scissors. They are the only species of arachnid able to consume solid foods. Some species strictly eat only leaf detritis, while others are omnivorous. Some hunt prey, while others are scavengers. Their eyes are rudimentary and cannot form images, so they use their second pair of legs as antennae to "see". They are also unlike spiders in that males have a penis and mate with females directly. Spiders pass spermatophores to females via their pedipalps. Some Harvestmen are also doting parents, with the males of some species caring for and protecting the eggs. Some species are only female, reproducing without a male. They are really fascinating little creatures, and they do a lot to help keep the world around us clean! So don't be afraid of them, and please don't squish them!
