when i was a kid i was always saddled with taking care of younger kids bc i was "so good with them" or whatever. it always pissed me off bc like. it really shouldn't be that hard to treat these little kids with dignity but so many adults around me seemed to have no clue how to do that. ridiculous. absurd. so i had to be the baby taking care of their babies. all my younger cousins at holidays, all the little ones at synagogue who were too young to sit through services. i didn't even like doing it at the time, i just knew that i was the only one for the job.

the adults would be like "wow emerson is so good with the younger children! they're going to be such a good mother one day!" and i would silently stew: i'm not that good at it!! i'm like, 10!! some of you adults are just all REMARKABLY bad at it!

as a kid, i figured this must have been because they didn't remember being little. i remembered being littler so i treated the young ones the way i'd wanted to be treated when i was their age.

but now i'm an adult and i still don't find it hard to know how to treat a kid with respect. some assholes really have no good excuses for how badly they treat kids. it's horrible.

anyway. as an adult i grew to enjoy working w young kids more bc it wasn't an obligation anymore. and also bc the wellbeing of children is something i am passionate about. but yeah i fucking hate how badly people treat kids that's the point of this post. do better.
