Columbus (2017)
Tumblr media
Being an architecture student, my expectations were quite a lot when I read about this movie. This movie might be the best photograph I’ve seen that lasts for 104 minutes. As stunning as the cinematography is, I cannot say that the movie had an amazing overall reaction from me. The visuals are everything I can hope for, although the symmetry starts to feel a little OCD after a point, every single scene is a beautiful photograph. Yet, the lack of a stimulating script with an already humble plot, the movie does not have all the dimensions a movie should have.
Drinking game: Take a shot everytime you see a scene with the color palette of Mondrian.

La double vie de Véronique (1991) dir. Krzysztof Kieślowski
Tumblr media
Dived in some “Holly Łódź ” cults lately. This is a fun term used for the cinema world and works that are originated in the city of Łódź in Poland. The films belonging in this context are mostly directed by famous directors that studied at the Łódź Film School. The list includes, of course; Roman Polanski,  Krzysztof Kieślowski, and Andrzej Wajda... The reason it’s called Hollylodz is that it has a better ring to it when you pronounce the word “Lodz” in Polish which is something like “woodge”.
So, in an attempt to understand this ecole, I keep watching the films of these masters and so far, I must say they are even underrated. The Double Life of Veronique, by  Krzysztof Kieślowski was such a movie that I wondered why the hell have I not seen it already... It was a film that felt like poetry. The sounds and the visual aesthetics were astounding. I liked the fact that he kept challenging our visual memory (with the red scarf for example). I also thought the movie could have been an obvious reference for Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, but hey, maybe it’s just me. I will not try and explain Kieslowski further more but just leave some images from the film.

My Pride Month Watchlist 2017
*RuPaul voice* time has come... to celebrate! This June I’m planning to watch (and rewatch) a series of films with LGBTQ themes, characters or narrations. (Unlike Sense8 very few can have it all).
1. Moonlight (2016) dir. Barry Jenkins
Tumblr media
2. Mine Vaganti (2010) dir. Ferzan Özpetek
Tumblr media
Ferzan Ozpetek flicks are my gig.
3. Carol (2015) dir. Todd Haynes
Tumblr media
Checked this one off the list yesterday. I was afraid it would be overrated or filled with clichés. Turns out, it definitely deserved the hype. It was an incredibly emotional movie and Cate Blanchett snatched my wig.
4. The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert dir. Stephan Elliott
Tumblr media
5.  The Rocky Horror Picture Show dir. Jim Sharman
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An absolute legend and my favorite musical ever. Contains the sweetest transvestite of Transylvania.
6. J'ai tué ma mère (2009) dir. Xavier Dolan
Tumblr media
As an absolute Xavier Dolan fan, I somehow still haven’t seen his debut film.
7. Pride (2014) dir.  Matthew Warchus
Tumblr media
8. A Single Man (2009) dir. Tom Ford
Tumblr media
Colin Firth accompanied by Tom Ford aesthetic? Yes, please.
9. Beginners (2010) dir. Mike Mills
Tumblr media
10. I did not include some of the legendary ones and other movies that I’ve already seen but if you haven’t seen them, they might be the place to start:
Paris Is Burning (1990) dir. Jennie Livingston
Brokeback Mountain (2005) dir. Ang Lee
Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013) dir. Abdellatif Kechiche
Milk (2008) dir. Gus Van Sant
Les Amours imaginaires (2010) dir. Xavier Dolan
Yves Saint Laurent (2014) dir. Jalil Lespert
Tangerine (2015) dir. Sean Baker
Laurence Anyways (2012) dir. Xavier Dolan
...and many more I probably forgot to mention.
