#one of my co-workers is 19 and I'm in my mid 30s#after work one day i was at home reflecting on a series of conversations we had#and started to feel weird in a bad way because my behavior towards him that day#i was very much treating him like one of my friendsā some of it not very appropriate for An Adult⢠towards A Kidā¢#and then I came back to my senses. i realized how poisoned my mentality was because of shit rhetoric like this all over social media#i grew up in the late 90s/early 00sā i had friends in my age groupā friends much younger than meā friends much older than me#i was just treating this 19 year old like a personā i know i shouldn't have felt weird because he is 19 and not like 13#but regardless of his ageā he's doing the same work and labor everyone else isā our collective comraderie shouldn't cut him out#big age gaps in specific sexual relationships or relationships that involve financial inequity should be scrutinized a little bit#that should never have bled out into this puritan repulsion of all relationships with an age gap#people need to be able to socialize with all age groups without stigmaā a community's success depends on it

That post about death note being "everyone's first anime" (untrue statement) made me curious and now I want to gather data for science
Can you reblog this and tell me where are you from and what was your starter anime?

the world gets a lot easier when you learn to be wrong without getting pissed or doubling down. saying, āyouāre right, that makes sense, I was misinformed, thanks for telling meā instead of going to war over something your egoās latched onto will save you time, energy, and the embarrassment of sounding like a whiny little bitch
#āmove your arguments from a position of 'im right here's why' to 'here's what i knowā what can i learn?ā#classic's quotes#advice#wisdom

I've been thinking about a Terry Pratchett quote, one that went something like, it's better to, something something, than curse the darkness.
Searching for it online brought up "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness," from Men at Arms. Yeah, I thought. That must have been it. But why do I remember something about a flamethrower? And why does that quote sound so... Tidy? Sweet? Too nice for a Pratchett novel?
It took me a while to find the time to dig through my copy of the book. But here you are:

'Might as well have a bloody king and have done with it!'
The rest of the Night Watch stood looking at their feet in mute embarrassment. Then Carrot said, 'It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness, Captain. That's what they say.'
Okay. That's it all right. But then it continues, on the top of the next page:

'What?' Vimes's sudden rage was like a thunderclap. 'Who says that? When has that ever been true? It's never been true! It's the kind of thing people without power say to make it all seem less bloody awful, but it's just words, it never makes any differenceā'
Well. That's Pratchett, all right.
And because it's all about timing, the actual punchline, as it were, only comes thirty or so pages later:

Nobby kept looking back longingly to the fire machine.
Sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.
... Seems apt, today.

i love lesbians. i went to get drinks with a masc who had sent me pictures of her hanging drywall. she confirmed over text that she was sending these to torture me. in person, she was so nervous her hands were trembling. she had to repeat her order twice because she was so quiet. she shakily asked for a hug at the end of the night, the way oliver twist asks for porridge. and then i got home and she sent me a picture of her just in a toolbelt, accompanied by one of the smuttiest text messages i've ever read. meanwhile when i called her to schedule the next date, she had to stop and say, "i'm so sorry i'm so nervous i'm out of breath." just. the whiplash of it all. godbless you every lesbian

I was dumbfounded when I learned that all my colleagues (4 people) think celebrating adult birthdays is weird and cringe, especially with your family. You can do a little something with your spouse and children but inviting anyone over is lame.
I didnāt even know that was an opinion someone could have.
I know people who think that about celebrating with their own family because they donāt have a great relationship with them or donāt want to celebrate with their friends because that usually ends in too much drinking but to think nobody should celebrate adult birthdays at all is crazy to me. And they seemed so genuinely surprised when I said Iāve never heard anyone think that before. Like I was the weirdo.
I thought maybe it had something to do with the local area because I didnāt grow up here but no. I talked to people who were born and raised here and they were as dumbfounded as me that my colleagues would think all adults feel that way. And no, my colleagues arenāt Jehovah's Witnesses or some other religion that doesnāt celebrate birthdays.
In my family itās not at all a ācelebrate meā day but an excuse to see each other. I live relatively far away from the rest of my family and canāt see them every day so we all kinda panic a little during those months when nobody has a birthday and come up with reasons to see each other anyway.
And all the adults Iāve talked to feel the same way. Itās not a Me day but an Us day where we take turns hosting and bring food when the host isnāt doing great or has low funds.
I fully understand why someone doesnāt want to celebrate with their own family or friends but to think nobody should is wild to me.
#every woman in my immediate family has a ābirthday weekā#and every male has a party of a dozen or more peopleā whether family or friends#OP should make a poll

RB if you think CD drives in computers are not obsolete, but in fact still necessary, despite being artificially phased out
#you can buy CD/DVD readers that connect to your computer's USB#āi don't want to buy a peripheral to read CDs they should just continue being built into computersā#sure and i agree with youā but they don't. do you want to use your discs or not
