some weird stuff

one detail that i actually just found was how in the leave and maria endings, how you can just tell who is mary and who is maria from just the first glance of the cutscene.

spoilers for sh2r ahead!:

for the leave ending, maria (disguised as mary) is standing. the bed is there but shes standing to look out the window. it gives the illusion that she's not sick.

she's not bedridden. she's fully capable of being up and on her own because that's what james wanted. he wanted mary to be healthy and because she wasn't, it obviously led to their downfall and eventually him killing her.

maria knows this and wants to create this false sense of security by making it seem that mary is well and healthy by the end of this, but james now knowing what he did—he can recognize that this isn't right and that it's maria. initially he wants to believe that it's mary but it isn't. he's finally decided that this needs to stop and that he needs to move on.

meanwhile in the maria ending, you see this:

this is actually mary. she's sitting down in the bed because it represents how she was ill and cannot move around or do much on her own. james has accepted that he wants maria and that he's repeating the cycle, so why would maria be there?

she was too sick to do anything on her own so all she could do was lay in bed. there's already a large distinction between mary and maria pretending to be mary. james knows this is mary because she's not appealing to what he wants. she's how she was. bedridden and ill, even if she doesn't look as sick right then.

and mary knows about his hatred towards her and how he thought, he tries to deflect but there's no point. it's all doomed to happen again because he's selfish.
