Sad news today; Our Tolkien fandom has suffered a death in the family. Our beloved Andrew Lesnie passed on at the age of 59 on Monday. Andrew was a vital part of Peter Jackson’s team on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and most recently, The Hobbit Trilogy. He was an absolute visionary, who, like Peter Jackson, loved making films. You could tell how passionate he was about films because of his ever present smile and enthusiasm. He was a constant face in the behind the scenes footage, his trusty camera always rolling.
He was brilliant, he was an Oscar winner, but most importantly he was our family member. So today, hold those you love a little closer and let’s keep Andrew’s family and friends in our thoughts. Here on l-o-t-r & the-hobbit Blog, I want to dedicate this day to Andrew Lesnie’s legacy. Rest in peace, Andrew. We will always be thankful for your sheer brilliance and talent and I will most certainly miss your smile.
Thank You and God Bless

I wear glasses.  Can I manage without glasses?  Well, yes, probably.  I could squint a lot, constantly move up close to anything I want to see, take the bus or a taxi if I want to go anywhere.  I could just accept that I’ll never be able to see eagles flying in the sky or whales jumping out of the ocean.   But why?  Why try so hard to manage life when I could just put on a pair of glasses?  No one would ever suggest a near-sighted person should just work harder.  No one would say ‘Maybe that’s just your normal’ to someone that needs glasses.  They would say ‘Let’s go to the eye doctor and get you a prescription so you’re able to see again.’ You shouldn’t have to try so hard.
My doctor (paraphrased), when I expressed doubts about going back on an anti-depressant.  (via

This is such a good analogy because nobody thinks about it like this.  If you wear glasses, you literally need constant use of a medical aid to experience the world like most people do.  If it were anything besides glasses, that would be considered a disability.  But needing glasses is an extremely common, visible, and accepted form of disability to the point that we don’t even consider it one, we just accept that some people need glasses and that’s perfectly normal and there’s nothing wrong with needing to rely on them.
That is how all disabilities and illnesses should be seen, and how we should look at treatment for them.  You have a problem, and you need help dealing with it, and there’s nothing wrong with either of those things.  That’s perfectly normal and that’s okay.

Fandom: Sherlock Rating: R(for graphic descriptions of murder victims)
The latest victim seems not to have been a random choice after all.  In her last days she had tried to reach out to Sherlock.  Did what she know lead to her death?

My favourite Disney villain EVER.  I adored him.  He was so NOT what you would think of at first as "the lord of the dead".  He was smart and funny and sarcastic as hell.  When this movie first came out I was so all about it.  I actuallly started eating happy meals again to get the toys.  My folder for school was all done up with Hades.  I still have the action figure around somewhere.  *g*

The thing about reading fanfic (and original slash fic) is that you get used to that particular writing/reading culture after a while. You get used to the frank discussions of sexuality and kink, the close attention to diversity and social justice issues in the text, the unrestrained creativity when it comes to plot. The most amazing, creative, engaging stories I’ve ever read have almost all been fanfiction, and I think part of that is because there’s no limitations placed on the authors. They’re writing purely out of joy and love for the world and its characters, with no concerns about selling the finished product. The only limit is their imagination. Next to that, most mainstream fiction starts tasting like Wonder Bread, you know?
(via ckingsbridge)
I couldn't agree more with this.  It's why I don't actually READ all that much mainstream fiction any more.  It's all so... blah and you always know what's going to happen.

Pretty much.  Works for just about anyone who doesn't fit in with day to day norms. I've been told more than once that mental illness labels are just that and that I shouldn't subscribe to them or "limit" myself to them.  For me, though, labels like Bi-polar, Sever Anxiety Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder have been life savers.  And I mean that literally, as they helped me move past my suicide attempts and rebuild my life. Those "labels" taught me that I wasn't alone, that I wasn't a freak.  They gave me the confidence to accept my limitations not as signs that I was weak or that I'm still a child unable to live in the "real world".  They gave me the strength to stop being ashamed and the courage to ask for help when I needed it so that those limitations don't rule my life.  They've led me to others like myself who experience the same things.  And God, the RELIEF the first time I spoke to someone who understood what I was saying because they live with the same.  Never mind the fact that those labels also allowed us to start trying to find medications that could help me. And when we found the right combination of meds... it was like night and day. Getting those labels probably saved my life and has DEFINITELY improved my quality of life.  So, no I'm not going to be ashamed of the labels I've been given or dismiss them as meaningless as best and hurtful at worst.  I'm going to own those labels because having them means I can live without the restrictions of my illnesses.
When I explain a queer term to a queer person:
Oh.
Oh. oh.
So I’m—I’m not—it’s a thing. I’m not broken.
When I explain a queer term to a non-queer person:
Aren’t you just making the problem worse by making up all these words?
Why do you even need labels!
