Writers' Resolutions

A bunch of resolutions for writers and people who want to try writing this year. It's in no way something you must do, these are just ideas how you can set out to improve your writing in 2022.

Try something new

Try to write something you have never written before.

Write something silly, write something serious, write in a different genre, try to write characters that you haven't explored yet.

Write consistently

Writing consistently will not only give you exercise to become a better writer, it can also keep your voice as a writer consistent.

If you have a first draft, write it down quickly and without big breaks inbetween.

Don't wait for inspiration

Waiting for inspiration to come can take forever. So don't wait for inspiration: search for it.

Make writing into a habit that comes natural to you every day, look up writing prompts, read a book you like, get yourself into the mood to write and do it!

Do your research

As a writer, you need to know about a lot of different things.

You can do research by reading books, listening to podcasts, watching movies, talking to other people, etc.

Take this year to learn something new and then tell your reader all about it.

Edit that draft

We all have that one story we wrote a while ago and then stopped at the first draft.

Take it and reread it and then rewrite it. You have a new perspective on it now and maybe this will be the year you turn your idea into a book.

Set yourself a goal

This explicitly doesn't have to be a goal about how many words or pages you write.

Your goal can be to finish something, to edit something, to write a few sentences every day, to share more of your writing or to publish something.

Don't compare

Try not to compare your writing with that of someone else.

Writing is about finding your own voice and telling a story that only you can tell. Also: other people's accomplishes don't diminish your own!

Write!

Whatever the outcome of your writing may be and whatever you want to do with it, if you want to publish it, if you want to share it with friends, or if you want to keep it to yourself: just start writing!

Do what you love to do.

Achei a narração muito bem estruturada, essencialmente devido à fabulosa perspetiva do narrador.

You learn a lot even while you sleep because your brain is always active

“While you are asleep, your brain works continuously and rapidly. When you learn new information, new synapses begin to form in your head alongside dendritic spines. These spines and synapses then become mature when you are asleep, and your brain is ready to work well with little interruption.

Sleep gives your brain an active refresh that filters unnecessary information and pieces together the necessary information.

When you sleep and wake up, there's a high chance that you will be able to find solutions to the problems that have plagued your learning. Then when you are awake, reinforce those solutions by learning again what you've read and practicing it.

Space out your reading time, and take your time to understand what you've read. The brain is composed of two memory systems called the working memory and the long–term memory. The working memory is like a school bag; it doesn't contain much, but it can include what you currently need. Your working memory deals with what you're consciously thinking of at that moment. It holds limited amounts of information.

Scientists believe that humans can only hold on to four different pieces of information simultaneously and that recalling this information is the job of the working memory.

However, when you're not focusing, your working memory drops the information and then hibernates until you recall it again. On the other hand, long–term memory is like a locker, which means it can contain a lot of information. The long–term memory system is scattered around the brain, and you can never fill it up. To get information from the long–term memory system, you need constant practice and process.”

Comentário: “Cebola Crua com Sal e Broa” traça o percurso do autor desde os primeiros anos, numa quinta do Marão, à juventude, “numa Lisboa cinzenta interrompida por uma revolução muito familiar, a descoberta do mundo através dos livros, dos jornais e da televisão, e as incursões na política numa democracia cheia de encantos e contradições”.

Ao longo da narrativa referencia as diversas regiões do país pelas quais passou e relata pormenores de uma educação numa casa diferente e alternativa. São ainda descritos momentos notáveis como a faculdade, marcada por Marcelo [Rebelo de Sousa] e pelas lutas estudantis, o 25 de Abril em direto e com a participação do pai [Francisco Sousa Tavares], a extinção da PIDE [polícia política] e as loucuras do PREC [Período Revolucionário].

Seguidamente e pós 25 de Abril de 1974, descreve a liberdade recente nos jornais e o fascinante mundo da televisão, destacando entre outros, episódios com [Mário] Soares, [António] Guterres e [José] Sócrates. Subjacente encontra-se a sua paixão pelo jornalismo e pela literatura, assim como “as promessas de vida cumpridas e as juras por cumprir”.

Extraordinária biografia, de narrativa franca e inteligível.

O sorriso ao pé da escada foi escrito a pedido do pintor Fernand Léger. O compositor italiano Antonio Bilbalo compôs ainda uma ópera a partir desta obra, que Miller classificou como a mais estranha e verdadeira que escrevera até então.

Espaço: Esfera circense

Comentário: Esta história ilustra algumas das ciladas do entusiasmo, e da satisfação do desejo de mudar certas coisas, agindo de acordo com os mais elevados parâmetros de ética e integridade. Pretende-se aqui que o leitor reflita seriamente sobre questões existenciais subjacentes à resenha de Augusto.

Estaremos no caminho certo? Será que estamos a agir de acordo com a nossa verdade ou antes a reproduzir a verdade alheia? Adiantará alterar o curso natural dos acontecimentos? Saberemos lidar com as consequências que daí advirão? E assim, com um texto dotado de uma mestria fora do comum, Miller embrenha o leitor nos lúgubres e primorosos labirintos de existencialismo.

De origem judaica, foi levado para Vernet em março de 1940, na sequência de uma denúncia anónima que o acusava de ser comunista, quando se encontrava refugiado em Paris após ter conseguido escapar, em 1939, à repressão do fascismo em Espanha.

Contexto: Segunda guerra mundial.

Espaço: campo de concentração de Vernet D’Ariège, situado no sul de França. Criado em 1918 para alojar as “tropas coloniais”, serviu a partir de 1938 para dar resposta ao êxodo de espanhóis refugiados da Guerra Civil e, depois, ao internamento administrativo de estrangeiros considerados perigosos para a segurança do estado e da ordem pública, passando a ser um campo repressivo destinado a encerrar “estrangeiros indesejáveis”. A partir de 1942 passou também a servir como campo de trânsito para judeus perseguidos, que eram depois deportados para os Läger nazis.

Tempo: 1940 – 1942

Narrador: Jacobo, um corvo que deambulava pelo Campo.

Comentário: Brilhante sátira alusiva à guerra e à condição humana. Jacob constata a obvia inferioridade dos humanos perante os corvos, analisando-a, criticando-a e reportando-a sem concessões. Estupidez, fragilidade, irracionalidade, obediência e submissão são alguns dos aspetos que mais o intrigam

The reality of contemporary society has changed, hand in hand with technological development, globalization, increased longevity and current changes in the world of work. The skills acquired in initial training tend to quickly become obsolete, which means that current and future requirements require constant readaptation and refresher aimed at the needs that arise therefrom.

That said, lifelong education is fundamental!

Only the holistic conception of education that claims an educational continuum will give foundations to employment, lifestyle and human relationships in constant change.

To learn how to know, acquiring tools for understanding, a critical spirit is needed.

In order to learn how to do, acting on the environment, qualification, communication skills and transmutation capacity are required.

To learn how to live together, cooperating in all human activities, it is necessary to discover ourselves, others and social responsibility.

Finally, in order to learn how to be, it is imperative to integrate all of the previous precepts, via valuing spirituality, education for values, autonomy, awareness, proactivity and the maintenance of interpersonal relationships through fruitful communication.

READ, learn, reflect, share and interact! Only then you will really live!

A realidade da sociedade contemporânea alterou-se, a par e passo com o desenvolvimento tecnológico, a globalização, o aumento da longevidade e as atuais mudanças no mundo do trabalho. As competências adquiridas na formação inicial tendem a tornar-se rapidamente obsoletas, o que faz com que as exigências atuais e futuras, requeiram uma readaptação e reciclagem constante dirigida às necessidades que daí advêm.

Posto isto, a educação ao longo da vida assume-se como fundamental!

Apenas a conceção holística de educação que reclame um continuum educativo, conferirá bases ao emprego, ao estilo de vida e as relações humanas em constante mutação.

Para se aprender a conhecer, adquirindo instrumentos de compreensão, precisa-se de espírito crítico.

Para se aprender a fazer, agindo-se sobre o meio envolvente, necessita-se de qualificação, competências de comunicação e capacidade de transmutação.

Para se aprender a viver juntos, cooperando em todas as atividades humanas, requer-se o descobrimento de si, do próximo e de responsabilidade social.

Por fim para se aprender a ser é imperativo integrar todos os anteriores preceitos, via valorização da espiritualidade, da educação para os valores, da autonomia, da consciência, da proatividade e da manutenção de relações interpessoais via comunicação profícua.

Rubric 4 - REVERSE ROLES

“Read a newspaper and select news that has aroused curiosity or interest. Write a conversation between two characters that focuses on the previously chosen news.”

- Is my future freedom at stake by the simple fact of being who I am? - comments X, shooing a fly with the newspaper.

- What do you mean X? – immediately counters Y.

- Have you ever heard of the European movement #ReclaimYourFace that calls for a ban on the use of artificial intelligence systems for dubious purposes?

- Dubious? – says Y.

- Hey from what I understand, it concerns massive surveillance using biometric data. It's sort of 1984 by George Orwell. Did you read it? I gave you that book last Christmas.

- Hmmm… yes… transversally… - Y babbles in a confused way. – A kind of Big Brother, isn't it?

- Yap. – Reply X – I'm glad to know that at least you get it. But, based on biometric data, that is characteristics that are inherent to us, governments and police forces try to predict or evaluate our actions. They film us in public spaces such as parks, streets, sports complexes, transport stations, etc. and facial recognition software detect who we are. This #ReclaimYourFace initiative intends to make these biometric surveillance practices illegal in public spaces.

- I understand, but it's still redundant … – Y starts.

- Redundant, you say? Redundant? - interrupts angrily X - this is a shame. Nobody controls me. I fully support this movement. I have a right to my privacy. Walking around in databases… No, no. I don't like these carnivals.

- But you are constantly … - replies X.

- Constantly fighting for my rights. That's it. Have you ever thought that this could in the future become a barrier? I don't even say just in terms of employment, but in all spheres of the political, social and economic world. Nobody has anything to do with the spaces I frequent, my daily habits, my tastes or my interests. I think it's very good that the European Parliament has banned these practices. Great news for democracy and privacy.

- X just a little while ago when we left the shoe store... - mention Y in an incredulous way.

- Speaking of shoes… i noticed that I got lots of ads about shoes on my cell phone, after we left. Look, these velvet ones seems wonderful– says X, hastily putting down the newspaper and showing Y his shiny cell phone.

- “Behavioral retargeting” – says Y with disdain – have you heard of it?

Rubrica 4- INVERTA PAPÉIS

"Leia um jornal e selecione uma notícia que lhe tenha despertado curiosidade ou interesse. Redija uma conversação entre dois personagens que se foque na notícia previamente escolhida."

- Estará a minha liberdade futura em causa pelo simples facto de ser quem sou? – comenta X, enxotando uma mosca com o jornal.

- Como assim X? – contrapõe imediatamente Y.

- Já ouviste falar no movimento europeu #ReclaimYourFace que apela à proibição da utilização de sistemas de inteligência artificial com propósitos duvidosos?

- Duvidosos? – diz Y.

- Pah pelo que percebi diz respeito à vigilância massiva com recurso a dados biométricos. É uma espécie de 1984 de George Orwell. Chegaste a ler? Ofereci-te esse livro no Natal passado.

- Hummm… sim… transversalmente… - balbucia Y de forma atrapalhada. – Uma espécie de Big Brother, não é?

- Nem mais. – Replica X – Tenho gosto em saber que ao menos lhe pegaste. Mas bom, baseando-se em dados biométricos, isto é, características que nos são inerentes, governos e forças policiais procuram prever ou avaliar as nossas ações. Filmam-nos em espaços públicos como parques, ruas, complexos desportivos, estações de transportes, etc. e softwares de reconhecimento facial detetam quem somos. A tal iniciativa #ReclaimYourFace pretende tornar ilegais essas práticas de vigilância biométrica em espaços públicos.

- Compreendo, mas não deixa de ser redundante … – inicia Y.

- Redundante, dizes tu? Redundante? – interpela furiosamente X – isto é uma vergonha. A mim ninguém me controla. Apoio totalmente esse movimento. Agora era o que mais faltava. Eu tenho direito à minha privacidade. Andar aí em bases de dados… Não, não. Eu cá não entro nesses carnavais.

- Mas tu estás constantemente a … – responde X.

- Constantemente a lutar pelos meus direitos. Essa é que é essa. Já pensaste que isso poderá futuramente assumir-se como uma barreira? Já nem digo só em termos de emprego, mas em todas as esferas do mundo político, social e económico. Ninguém tem nada que ver com os espaços que frequento, com os meus hábitos quotidianos, gostos ou com os meus interesses. Acho muito bem que o parlamento europeu tenha banido essas práticas. Grandes notícias para a democracia e para a privacidade.

- X ainda há pouco quando saímos da sapataria – menciona Y de forma incrédula.

- Por falar em sapataria… Depois de sairmos olhei para o telemóvel e vi uma série de publicidade sobre sapatos. Olha que estes de veludo até me davam algum jeito – profere X largando apressadamente o jornal e exibindo a Y o seu reluzente telemóvel.

- "Behavioral retargeting" – profere Y com desdém – já ouviste falar?

Rubric 2: BE INSPIRED BEFORE YOU START WRITING

"Listen three times in a row to a music that you associate with an important moment in your life. Choose an excerpt from the lyrics of this song to be the first sentence of a text that describes a character's relationship with his mother."

And the calm is waiting for a place in me - he said weakly. X's relationship with his mother resembled the vast Alentejo countryside in the bleak autumn evenings. Lately it was full of heavy gray clouds that hung over the dry and golden harvests of the joys of yore. The uniformity of the relief of the region was manifested in the form of nostalgia plains from which stood out, scattered and distant mountainous masses of low altitude compassion. Fleeting sunbeams peeked shyly from the heights, though little or nothing they managed to light any longer. As Y vehemently warned, summer had come to an end.
