something that has starting to bother me an increasing amount is society praising people for natural abilities, specifically beauty.
what made me really realize this was a few nights ago when i was at a small party with friends and a rather drunk guy ended up flirting with me. now, i don’t blame the guy in this, he was being respectful and obviously wasn’t trying to make me start thinking about the societal implications of his inebriated compliments.
regardless, he called me beautiful a few times, and i struggle to take compliments so i thanked him and joked ā€œit’s because of the makeup.ā€ for context, unless i am around roommates or very close friends/family, i wear what’s considered glamour makeup- extremely winged eyeliner, dark over-the-lip lipstick, pink eyeshadow…it is far from subtle or natural and i never intend it to be. i consistently do my makeup like this and it’s how i like it and how it makes me feel pretty. in response to this he went on some spiel about the difference between makeup and natural beauty and how i have natural beauty and should be proud of that.
and that really got me thinking. why? why should i be proud of getting ā€œgoodā€ genetics? why should i be praised for getting lucky rather than the hour i spend every morning doing my hair and makeup. even if i’m not doing it for the validation of others, it’s something i take pride in being good at after years of figuring out my own style. sure it’s fine to compliment someone’s natural looks, but why in the world am i being praised over something i have no say in?
this goes the same way in my mind as talents do. i hate when people praise someone by saying that they’re talented, rather than acknowledging how much hard work they’ve put in to getting where they are. sure, ariana grande may have naturally been born with a great singing voice, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t work her ass off to train it to where it is today.
another personal example- i played saxophone in middle and high school. i worked off of pure talented and was constantly being rewarded for that. i got first chair, i got awards, i got solos, etc. that is until the talent ran out and i realized i actually had to work to keep maintaining my status. i very quickly stopped caring for the instrument and began loathing band when this happened. meanwhile, my friend who was second chair absolutely loved playing and would practice as much as she could. she is an absolutely incredible musician and is constantly going to extra mile to achieve her goals. however, i hated practicing and wouldn’t look at the sheet music we were supposed to prepare until the day of since i knew i would be fine to sight read. so why was i rewarded and fawned over for just being naturally good when an insanely hard worker was next to me, actually trying to improve? it’s such bullshit.
all that to say, why do we as a society put things people can’t even control up on a pedestal? am i supposed to feel proud when someone says i have nice face proportions or happen to be naturally inclined towards an instrument? that feels like a slap in the face. i’d much rather have something i actually worked for to be drawn attention to. idk man, it’s so dumb in my eyes. i get people are just trying to be nice, but it feels kind of sad. is the best thing you can find to congratulate me on something i didn’t even do?

while i’m not huge into shipping culture at this point in my life, i really do love seeing that the discourse around deltarune ships is incredibly tame. back in the day i know damn well there would have been a war between krusie and suselle shippers, but the worst i’ve seen is basically ā€œyeah lol i only ship one of those and the others just not for me.ā€ it’s genuinely so refreshing to see in a fandom.

does anyone know if there’s a canon explanation for susie’s scleras and teeth color changing between yellow and white, or is it a ā€œit looks better for different spritesā€ stylistic thing? deltarune tend to be pretty precise with character designs, so i highly doubt it’s just overlooked.
in both the light and dark worlds, susie’s sprites change her eyes and teeth between both yellow, or one white and one yellow (there may be both white as well but i can’t think of any off the top of my head).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the eyes may be used to emphasize when she’s surprised, like when kris suddenly grabs her in chapter 3. these pictures are one frame apart, so if it isn’t just stylistic and something happening in-universe to susie’s eyes, that means it can happen very quickly. maybe it’s a monster or reptile trait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the teeth on the other can i understand a lot less. they change color during the same chapters, so it’s unlikely that she’s doing something to them between scenes that cause a color change. the eyes changing color to show emotion i can get behind, but the teeth randomly switching between white and yellow is really interesting to me. again this could just be an artistic choice and nothing to dig into, but i wanted to know if anyone has any ideas on why it happens!

Now I am by no means an artist- I think my style would be considered ā€œkids book that’s supposed to look overly simplisticā€- but I had A Visionā„¢ļø of @snapscube if she was in UnderedTale or Deltadrune. I tried to fit as many goofs and gaffes from the streams as I could, I’ve enjoyed watching them so much!

Every cinematic parallel in @snapscube’s Deltarune stream!
Some of these may be reaches, but when you’re scouring 8 hours of footage trying to find similarities it’s easy to start grasping at straws😭😭

oh lord i didn’t even think about the episodes being split in half…again, i really think craig has the shows interest in mind but i hope that appealing to children’s botched attention spans won’t hurt the quality of the story. one of the most charming parts about STF is how fleshed out its world is.
think of your favorite episode that teaches a lesson and then think if it would still be your favorite if it was told in half the time. personally, i don’t think ā€˜the shy princess’ would be as impactful to kids learning that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and can accommodate for your friends rather than change them if it was squeezed into an 11 minute episode.
this especially wouldn’t work with any episode with stakes or plot retaining to the rest of the series as well. ā€˜day of the sorcerers’ felt a little rushed as is, imagine all that information and emotion being packed into 11 minutes…and will there be continuity still like season 4 or only episodic like season 1? kids aren’t stupid, but if their attention spans are this abysmal they might not pay attention long enough to understand that last episode links to the next in some way.
the obvious solution for this is to just extend any more important episodes into the full 22 minutes, but that can’t happen in the first 10 or so, right? it might loose kids interests if they’re not fully invested yet and things stop moving at a break neck pace. can the first episode be longer like ā€˜once upon a princess?’ or will that be too long to hook kids attentions?
i understand that disney wants to get good ratings and adhere to what will do that in todays time, but sofia the first is not a brand new IP that needs to quickly grasp everyone’s attentions. it’s already done that. they will have fans coming back regardless and parents who know the name and trust it. while my points from the original post still stand of parents putting literally anything on for their kids, i really wish disney would just be the change they want to see. kids still watch their movies, they can stomach a 22 minute story. you are the biggest media company in the damn world, you don’t have to encourage something that makes your shows suffer.
i will be really discouraged if half the episodes just turn into ā€œoh no, theres wacky magic that we need to solve really quickly!ā€ again, i have faith in craig and the people on his team who really do care about this series and it’s message, but not disney as a whole. i’m really hoping RM has the same charm the original series had while adapting to what kids want. i hate to be the ā€œwell i grew up with it this way so that means it’s better!ā€ person, because i really try not to be, i just genuinely think that STF works better in longer form content.
i can’t help but wonder what exactly the intended audience for sofia the first royal magic will be. everyone in the original shows age demographic while airing is a teenager or adult now. and while a lot of fans are far from the age demographic, the new show definitely won’t be aimed at us.
i just wonder how well it’s going to do as a stand alone show, as many kids will end up watching it separate from the original series simply because it’s new. then again, it’s probably different now that we’re in the age of streaming, but i don’t see parents putting on the original 4 seasons just so their preschooler gets the lore for its spin-off. i have a nephew who’s in the age demographic, and his mom will just put on whatever’s on for kids the front page of a streaming service for him usually. if that’s the attitude for most parents, the show could come off pretty confusing and not super engaging to kids. and while it COULD be filled with exposition of the past 4 seasons, i fear that could get grating pretty quickly if not done correctly.
i’m sure the people working on the show have thought about the logistics, and i am absolutely thrilled for its release next year, i just kind of worry how well it will go over i guess. then again, sofia the first was a massive hit, so fingers crossed royal magic will bring in new and old fans to watch!

Sofia the First Pre-Canon Headcanons
because i guarantee royal magic won’t touch on the characters pasts
The Village
• Miranda had a bad relationship with her parents and ran away in her teenage years. This is why Sofia’s maternal grandparents are never mentioned.
• Miranda didn’t intend to stay in Dunnwitty long, but met Birk while passing through and eventually they decided to settle down there together. Neither had great childhoods, and committed to making Sofia’s the best they possibly could.
• Miranda and Birk’s wedding was the cheapest option in a dingy little church, but it felt infinitely more special to the extravagant one she had with Roland.
• Jades mother died in childbirth and her father is constantly busy with work to support himself and his daughter. This is why Jade is always alone, even on her birthday. Miranda and Helen would almost always have her staying at their homes because of this.
• Jade has a fear of abandonment because of how often her dad is gone, causing her to act out when she thinks someone is leaving her (A Tale of Two Teams, for example).
• Ruby is the only one in her trio of friends that has both biological parents still alive. Even though her dad is never mentioned, I like to think that he helps to provide for the family meaning that Helen has extra time to be a Buttercup troop leader.
• When Birk died at sea, half of Miranda’s income was gone, causing her to severely struggle with money even more. She didn’t tell Sofia that Birk actually died, just that he got lost at sea. In reality, he was confirmed dead, but she didn’t have the heart to break it to Sofia, who figured it out on her own anyway.
• Sofia was 4-6 years old when Birk died so her memories of him are sparse. They were very close when he was alive though.
• When she got called to the palace to make Roland new shoes, Miranda didn’t intend to pursue him romantically, but took the opportunity to try and get more money out of it by talking to him kindly and humanizing herself so he’d feel sympathetic and pay her more for the job.
• This is why she brought Sofia to the appointment despite not needing her help- she figured that the king would be more likely to pay better if he saw that Miranda had a child.
• Roland, however, thought it was love at first sight. Realizing that she could get more than just donations out of him, Miranda, despite not immediately feeling much attraction to him, did everything she could in order to woo him.
• Miranda did eventually end up loving Roland as well, but it was never the same way she felt about Birk.
• While doing something morally wrong in using Roland for his money, Miranda had good intentions, only wanting to be able to provide a good life for Sofia.
• When Roland insisted he buy her anything she wanted as a wedding gift, Miranda only asked he buy the village shoe shop in order to preserve Sofia and her old life. This is why it hasn’t changed at all, as Sofia says, when they visit it in Forever Royal.
The Castle
• Roland and Lorelei’s marriage was arranged by his father. While they did love each other, Roland felt more strongly towards Miranda.
• Amber was always told by the castle staff that she looked like her mother growing up. This stopped when Roland remarried, but left a lasting impression on her.
• Roland never destroyed the wishing well because he still had some hope that he could use it to bring Lorelei back.
• All portraits of Lorelei but one were destroyed after her death, which Roland keeps hidden in one of the castles secret passages.
• Roland chose the amulet for Sofia for the reason he told her, but also because he knew how much Tilly loved it at Sofia’s age. He told Sofia that it’s ā€œvery special,ā€ since Tilly told him the same thing when they were kids.
• Tilly was very close to being the one to save Elena, but Elena worried that she was a little too scatterbrained to pull it off and waited for Sofia instead.
• Tilly and Cedric never got to know each other all that well as children, but had sympathy for one another as they were both the least favorite child of their respective families.
• Tilly was bullied at Royal Prep (I assume that’s where she and Roland went) because of the way she acted- she never let it get to her though.
• The secret passages in the castle (as seen in the Secret Library, for example) were made as ways for the servants to get around, but were forgotten about overtime. Some of them are still used for the same purpose, but other ones were blocked off.
• Cedric has scars across his body from failed spells and experiments. He feels that they make him a failure, hence wearing several layers of clothes to hide them constantly. The worst of the scars are on his hands.
• Cordelia had Calista out of wedlock, something extremely frowned upon at the time. Despite their bad blood, Cedric never looked down on his sister for it, sparking an agreement that they would get along for the sake of Calista.
• Calista’s only male role model growing up was Cedric which is why she fixated on him so much. Cedric is so uncomfortable with the attention because of how his other family members look down on him. He is scared that Calista’s love for him will one day fade like his sisters did, and is afraid to get attached to her because of it.
there is infinite material to work with, i swear. i think i’ll try to make a timeline of all the episodes at some point too. and who had the amulet when…hmm…

i think my favorite sofia the first headcanon is that elena was just fucking around in ā€˜cedric be good.’ the whole episode the amulet is giving and taking away powers from cedric for the littlest things, i choose to believe elena was doing it to mess with him for fun. hey, if i’d been trapped in there for 40 years i’d take the opportunity for some pranking too.
