The One About Ezra & Sabine’s Fairy Tale, Part IV (End)
Part I || Part II || Part III
The Second Mission for both Ezra and Sabine is a time of personal growth while simultaneously moving back towards each other. Finding Ezra is Sabine's Hero Journey, and it should be transformative for her; likewise, there should be a transformative Hero Journey for Ezra that concludes his dealings with the purrgil. Towards the end of it, Sabine and Ezra reunite in dramatic fashion, perhaps combining their complementary strengths to defeat the Big Bad in a way that neither of them could have done alone. Then they return to Lothal victorious.
Tumblr media
The Otherness created for them in Rebels is resolved in their reunion. The Journey into Adulthood is complete. If all goes according to plan, they get to live Happily Ever After.
Together.
Married.
Because that's the point.
"It was a simple story about a boy who was lost and a girl who was broken."
Star Wars Rebels is about Sabine and Ezra, and so should its continuation be. Two kids without a Home and Family found new ones, and it was there that they found each other to make a Home and Family with for the rest of their days.
The First Story needs its completion in the Second.
At the end of Rebels, the Epilogue reflects on what both Sabine and Ezra gave up in order to see the rewards it wrought - for everyone else. Then Sabine leaves, sacrificing Home once again, in order to get Ezra and bring him Home. To her Home. With her. It’s very much positioned as a moment of hope that anticipates a share in the peace time rewards for them, too. Together.
Star Wars is a fairy tale. Ezra and Sabine's story is a fairy tale.
And fairy tales often end with marriage as a sign of hope for the future. Maybe that sounds cliché or cringe, and maybe it is.
But that doesn't make it untrue.
In the end, Happily Ever After means that the Good Guys win. It means that there is hope for the future, that life will go on, that we will have people - perhaps even that one perfect person - to share our lives with, and that new life, new stories will arise long after we're gone.
The simplest fulfillment of this Happily Ever After - Home and Family as marriage and babies and community - isn't the natural outcome for every character in every story.
But it is for Ezra and Sabine.

A (mostly) spoiler free review
I'll leave the plot details out, at least lol
That was so fucking good.
It feels exactly like a nice long episode of the show from start to finish. I have missed these losers so much and having them back warms my heart.
I laughed. I cried. I screamed. I screamed some more.
Lamar Giles nails the characters and gives each of our faves beautiful moments to really shine and show off their layers and depths. The balance of action and heart and humor is on par with the original Star Wars film.
Tech is a star stand out to me, both out of his comfort zone and yet so in his element throughout. His relationship with Phee is incredibly sweet - they flirt casually, confidently, on the brink of something they both know is there but are in no rush to dive into, just enjoying things as they are for now, and damn do they make an excellent team in the field, even if Tech is often a little exasperated by some of Phee's methods. Also, I think he wins for my favorite clever line in the whole book.
Wrecker. You will come away from this book wanting to give Wrecker the biggest bear hug, I promise. He's insanely competent in this - they all are - and gets the chance to show off skills beyond his muscles. There are some incredible moments between him and Hunter that reveal Wrecker is a lot more than meets the eye and I love the trust on full display between them. Later in the book... well I won't give it away but Wrecker is the cutest, let's just say.
Omega, our darling child. She's so like her brothers, the very best parts of all of them. I'll try not to give too much away here but I so love how the author finds ways for Omega to save the day more than once in ways that the others couldn't, because of who she uniquely is, without it ever feeling like a cheap nod to the kids in the audience. Her moments are earned and it's so great to see her shine.
Hunter is having a rough week, I'm not gonna lie. Poor guy is struggling to carry the weight of the world and as we all know, that's only going to get worse for him in the months to come. Omega is such a balm on his soul and he is so sweet with her in this book - he adores his kid, that's for sure. One thing that kept hitting me over and over is how often Hunter thinks of CF99 as his family. Not squad, not even just brothers/sister. Family. I love that.
And Phee. What to say about our favorite pirate - erm, liberator of ancient wonders. She's part of the family, there's no doubt by the end of the book. The counter she provides to Hunter is fascinating and she's a natural at handling Omega. Obviously she has her thing with Tech, but her care for the squad goes a lot further than that. It's no surprise she sticks around even after Plan 99.
And I will just say - this book is fanfic fuel for all of us. There's so much here. It doesn't matter what your particular bent is, there are threads to pull and squishy bits to poke out for everyone. I am so excited to see what fandom will do with some of these moments and new details.

I finished the bad batch novel and can say I enjoyed it!
Spoilers under the cut
Firstly everything TechPhee was done so perfectly. I enjoyed every word of them interacting. Flirting. Existing in the same space.
Tech saying his body rose one degree when Phee came near him NERD. CUTIE.
Tech sitting behind Phee and holding her hips gently when they were riding on that animal and Phee pulling him closer. PERFECTION
Tech saying clones can father children and looking at Phee HEARTBREAKING.
But also
Uncle Wrecker.
Wrecker being like damn I don't want to be in the middle of this verbal fight Everytime Hunter was grumpy LMAO
Hunter just getting the short end of the stick BUT LIKE
When he gets knocked out and he pictures himself younger with Crosshair sitting on the Marauder and Crosshair saying you're not a good soldier but it's better to be a good person.
HUNTER WANTED TO HEAR THOSE WORDS. He struggled the whole book with being a good leader. To not being a leader and letting go of the past. But he had to know that it was okay. That he was making the right choice and hearing it from Crosshair who he left behind I just UGH.

First we did Tech. Now we have a Hunter. I think he turned out pretty nice. Looks great next to Tech. And now I kinda want to do the others plus Rex. Might have to do that.
