Positivity or Negativity?

Friendly Reminder, everyone. If you don't like absolutely everything Sega or Sonic Team puts out, that's okay. You don't have to, and you won't be any less of a Sonic fan for it. I certainly don't like every single Sonic related thing that they've made, and I still consider myself a well-rounded fan of the franchise.

If anything, fussing and complaining about everything is what disqualifies you as a fan. If all you do is be negative about everything, you're just doing it because you're on autopilot. It's all you know how to do now. Nothing you say is helpful or constructive. You're not a fan at this point. You're, let's say, a grump.

For all their many, MANY flaws, even some of the worst elitists can come together to take action when they don't like something. How do you think Sonic Mania came about?

On the flip side, of course, if you gush about absolutely everything and worship the franchise, you're not a fan either; you're a consumer. You're around because you like the thing, you've always liked the thing, and you'll always like the thing as long as you always get the thing, quality be damned.

For example, I enjoyed Shadow's game on launch and still enjoy it now, but I recognize that it's not exactly a masterpiece. I also see the likes of Sonic Blast and the game.com version of Sonic Jam as among the worst of the worst. If I absolutely LOVED those games without acknowledging any of their flaws whatsoever and just mindlessly played them because I just had to have 'em, I'd be a consumer.

Toxic negativity creates grumps. Toxic positivity creates consumers. Don't be either. I hope this makes sense.

I have a hard time understanding Knuckles as a character. I want to write him properly for future fics etc. Could you give us some pointers? In your opinion, what describes Knuckles as a character? What are his pros, cons, strengths and weaknesses?

I’ll do one lowdown condensed, one lowdown in detail (The latter culled from his Concept Mobius profile that I co-wrote)

In-character Knuckles

- Gullible. Naive.

- Honest.

- Quite oblivious to technology. Easily frustrated by techno-babble.

- Hot-tempered.

- Has a subtle inhospitality towards Sonic due to envy of his lifestyle.

- Honorable fighter. Doesn’t fight dirty.

- Shy around the ladies.

- Extremely determined. Quite steadfast.

Regarding his abilities

- Superhuman physical strength

- Extremely resilient

- Can swim

- Can glide but can’t actually fly-fly

- Can dig

- Is amongst the faster characters

The following is from his C:M profile;

Abilities and Aptitude: (1). Where Sonic has speed, Knuckles has power and is much more of a utility character when it comes to his physical abilities. Knuckles’  impossibly high strength enables him to perform amazing feats such as punching holes right through thick steel, lift objects many times his  own size, shatter boulders to smithereens, and possess near-maximizedendurance; capable of taking as much major punishment as he can dish out. (2). Very experienced swimmer. (3). By stretching  his arms and legs outwards while airborne, Knuckles can catch the wind  under his dreadlock-like spines and glide across the air. (4). Knuckles can climb pretty much any wall, no matter what material. (5). Excellent at digging and tunneling through subterranean regions. (6). Can be pretty fast when he has to be. 

Hobbies and Talents:(1). Highly adept in many, many forms of martial arts, making him the ideal melee combatant.  (2). Seems to be the only one apart from Tikal in the past who knows how to access and utilize the powers of the Master Emerald. He also has in-depth knowledge of theChaos Emeralds and what they can do. (3). Skilled treasurehunter; can track down almost any jewel or artifact, particularly Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald shards since he can sense their energy signals. Also has some extent of knowledge of ancient civilizations and ancient languages such as Babylonian. (4). Extreme Gear is probably the only hi-tech device Knuckles can use with skill.

Weaknesses: (1). As a result of his seclusion and his honest and one-track mind,  Knuckles is unbelievably gullible. He will take pretty much any kind of  bait if you can talk it into him well enough (which isn’t difficult). This has gotten him into trouble with Sonic on numerous occasions since Dr. Robotnik always takes advantage of this horrible flaw. (2). It seems that the irritable red one is shy around women, something Rouge can’t help but exploit.  (3). Knux’ isn’t too caught up with the times since he is very oblivious to the technologies and luxuries of the modern world. He displays outright confusion and even irritance when Tails begins chatting technobabble.

Personality Details:  Like how Sonic embodies the wind, Knuckles is like the mountain: stern, and unmovable. As long as Knuckles could remember, he was just sitting there protecting the Master Emerald at the shrine on Angel Island. This  sworn duty, which he has made a well-defended allegiance to, has caused  Knuckles to grow into a rather antisocial, reclusive individual; he is a  loner by nature. He is very uncaring, coldly honest, egotistical,  wild-tempered, and generally hard to get along with, most of the time.  It is often claimed that Knuckles is very untrusting, but this is by no  means plausible since Knuckles’ lack of social ingenuity has caused him  to be incredibly gullible on the other side. He is commonly tricked by  Eggman into thinking foolish things such as Sonic wanting to take the  Master Emerald. Many times, this has caused Knuckles to join Eggman’s  side and battle Sonic, which Sonic considers fun. Sonic sees Knuckles’  hot temper as no more than a cute little button to push and exploit for  his own amusement, since the hedgehog seems to draw entertainment out of  pissing Knuckles off. Sonic has a temper as well, though, and won’t  hesitate to turn “playtime” into a serious fight. You can’t  really fault him for that, though, since deep down, Knuckles holds a  steadfast belief that there’s good in everyone, which is why he’s given  Eggman so many “second chances”. At any rate, Knuckles always finds out  that he’s been duped in time and the consequences are a force to be  reckoned indeed. That, and if the Master Emerald is at all endangered,  Knuckles’ temper will rise to a fever pitch and will stop at nothing to  punish the perpetrator. In spite of Sonic & Knuckles’ rivalry and  the constant skirmishes they get themselves into, in the end, they  eventually join forces, and when those two fight together, it is one of  the most imposing forces one could ever have the misfortune of being put  up against, and ultimately they make amends. Knuckles, however, will  always envy Sonic’s insouciant and laidback lifestyle — that is probably  what’s responsible for his subtle inhospitable nature towards the  hedgehog. Recently, Knuckles has found another rival in Rouge  the Bat. Even though he is gullible, he always tries to keep his guard  up when around her, refusing to fall for (nearly) anything she tries to pull. Plus, while he does a very good job of hiding it, he does have  feelings for Rouge. Whether or not he’ll do something about it remains  to be seen. In spite of his flaws, Knuckles is a good guy and a loyal friend, once you get to know him. Just don’t piss him off. EVER.

Apparently, Uekawa-san is the ONLY one who cares about Silver's consistency.

As previously stated, from now on, I'm taking it upon myself to correct any official art that gets him, Shadow, or Rouge wrong, if possible.

Y'all might think it doesn't matter. Y'all might just laugh at me for caring too much. If there's one thing I don't care about, it's your opinion. If Silver being colored correctly doesn't matter to you, fine. Go somewhere else. Read the comics or something. Archie, IDW, fan comics, whatever. They sure as heck don't care, so you'll be in damn good company.

Sonic Fan Character Guide: Thresholds

In the past, Concept: "Mobius" had a guide for creating Sonic fan characters, with certain rules and guidelines for one to follow in order for one's character to be made with originality and canon in mind. The intent was to curb all the recolors, "long-lost Echidnas", and "Ultimate Lifeforms" that were all the rage at the time.

In short, the less _____ the Hedgehogs and Coldsteels, the better.

Over the years, even the idea of such a guide has been considered to be ridiculous or even elitist, as most Sonic fans just want to be left alone to have fun making whatever they want, quality be damned. To a point, they're right, but working within the canon is possible. You just need to know what those limits are and, well, be creative.

Any schmuck can (and has) make a different colored hedgehog/fox/echidna with abilities better than the main cast in every way, but let me ask you...is that really a good thing? Or is it just you trying to be like your favorite character(s)?

I'd argue that working within what's already been established gives you a chance to be more creative and think of alternate ways to have your character stand out from the crowd. Yes, using different universes gives you some wiggle room, but our focus is going to be game canon, so if your character is part of that universe specifically, this is the guide for you. (No, we don't consider IDW Sonic to be canon.)

To start with this new guide, we need to establish said limitations first, beginning with what thresholds your character should not be reaching or surpassing. These limits must be respected in order for your character to be original.

Sonic the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic are THE fastest characters, as well as THE fastest Speed types. Shadow the Hedgehog is 2nd fastest and Miles "Tails" Prower is 3rd.

Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is THE smartest. Tails is 2nd smartest. Dodon Pa and Wave the Swallow are the smartest and best in their respective fields, only matched by Eggman and Tails, who are catching up rather quickly.

Knuckles the Echidna is THE strongest character, as well as THE strongest Power type, not to mention the fastest. Shadow is 2nd strongest, and THE strongest Speed type. Knuckles is also the LAST and ONLY living Mobian Echidna. Eggman is the weakest Power type.

Rouge the Bat is the strongest Flight type character with Charmy Bee and Cream the Rabbit tied for being - arguably - the weakest. Without his ESP, Silver the Hedgehog is the slowest Flight type. Tails is THE fastest Flight type.

Jet the Hawk, Wave, and Storm the Albatross are the ONLY Babylon Rogues. Jet and Sonic are THE fastest Extreme Gear riders, with the former being world-renowned for it.

In the current timeline, only Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze the Cat, Silver, and Trip the Sungazer have Super forms to date. Additionally, only Sonic & Knuckles have Hyper forms. Silver has yet to use his Super form in the current timeline.

The Chaotix consists of only the following: Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy. Knuckles and Mighty the Armadillo have loose associations with the Chaotix, and Ray the Flying Squirrel has nothing to do with them.

Shadow is THE ONE AND ONLY Ultimate Lifeform. There is no other.

The Guardian Units of the Nation (G.U.N.) do not allow just anyone to join; Like any other military organization, you must meet all the standard requirements and complete training.

Rouge is the governments' only known spy.

The entire cast is single and has been shown to be heterosexual. Only a few are actively looking for partners. Do not create your character(s) to change that or be their offspring.

The Chaos Emeralds are difficult to get a hold of, and are constantly changing hands. The Sol Emeralds are protected by Blaze for her use alone, as is the Master Emerald by and for Knuckles. There are no other known power sources/relics.

Chaos Drives are creations of Professor Gerald Robotnik and are now used by G.U.N. to power their military robots and other machines. They aren't easy to acquire, either.

If there is a criminal underworld, Fang the Hunter isn't really a part of it. Or at least, not a well known figure. On that note, Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear aren't criminals, either.

While everyone in his era uses ESP, Silver is the only time traveler.

That's it!

This part of the fan character guide is subject to change as new facts are added to the lore with every game. Of course, if you don't want to use this guide, you don't have to. Everyone is free to make whatever character they want to represent them, use for roleplay, or otherwise have fun with. This guide is, just for those who want to their creations to be made as if they were a part of the world of Sonic, just made with cohesion.

What is My Place?

I have a stupid, vulnerable question to ask. I haven't taken my daily meds yet as of writing this, but this has been bothering me for some time, so I might as well get it out now rather than let it fester.

More than a decade ago, I was banned from the Sonic Stadium Message Boards after getting into it with an elitist. I was younger and unmedicated, but, that's no excuse on the internet, is it? Point is, that - as I was told - was the last straw for the SSMB staff, never mind that I hadn't been told of previous infractions at all. I attempted to return, but that second chance was squandered, too.

Long story short, when I was banned from those forums, I was banned from the heart, the core of the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom. Without access to that community, my place within that, well, community was gone, and my reputation disappeared along with it, as far as I know. Being kicked out of Psyguy's art book project for Sonic's 20th anniversary only made things worse.

I can also speculate that the rep of the host of Concept: "Mobius" also took a hit. This, along with other things I'm not at liberty to discuss resulted in C:M leaving chemb0t's Technoguild, and now, he refuses to speak to me.

From there, I had to find a new host for the site. The Outerhaven was willing to put me up, but I couldn't handle the staff at the time, so I left before the new site was even up. This, I assume, put my host in a financial bind of some sort, as hosting a site costs a lot of money. I could be wrong, but as he also won't talk to me under any circumstances, I can, again, only speculate.

So...for years, I've been on my own in the Sonic fandom. Known by few, liked by less. People disliking or even hating me is nothing new for me, as I've been dealing with hatred literally all my life, but what I can't handle is apathy, being dismissed for reasons either beyond my control or worse, reasons I am unaware of because no one will tell me what I did wrong or how to fix it.

No matter where I go, I can't help but feel alone. I know I've made mistakes. I've made enemies. People who used to be friends or acquaintances now can't stand me for one reason or another, and in some cases, I have no idea what those reasons are.

I can only assume that word got out regarding my many screwups and that no one with any clout is willing to give me or Concept: "Mobius" the time of day. I even had to leave the official Sonic reddit page and discord server out of embarrassment.

Were you to ask C:M's original founder, Nuclear Envoy, he'd probably tell you that I'd be nothing and that C:M would be/is nothing without him.

I'm starting to think that he's right.

Who am I in this fan community? I used to be known. Concept: "Mobius" used to be known, it had a positive reputation. Heck, it and I were THIS close to getting Sega's acknowledgement, believe it or not! Now it just seems like I got canceled before cancel culture was even a thing.

I had a place in the Sonic community, however meager. And I ruined it. Now I feel alone, isolated. Invisible. No one knows me, ergo, no one cares. Few members of the fandom's old guard are still around, and those that are either don't talk to me or won't, unless I'm mistaken. I'm eternally grateful to @greenyvertekins for sticking by me, but saying that I was satisfied with the state of things would be dishonest.

I just...I don't know what to do. Concept: "Mobius" would be in a much better place if it were more popular, but it's not, and it's all my fault. I don't know how to fix it and earn my spot back.

How to I get my place back? Did I even have one? How do I get a new one? Do I even deserve it?

Element of COOL: Combat - Devil May Cry

I think this is the kind of combat we wanted from Sonic Frontiers. That being said, this in particular would fit Shadow like a glove, I think.
