PIASTRI IS CHAMPIONSHIP MATERIAL
/ WHY LANDO NORRIS ISN’T MCLAREN’S TRUE NUMBER ONE DRIVER
Last year (2024), McLaren clearly had a favourite; Lando Norris.
Media and fans painted Max and Lando’s newfound rivalry as a championship battle. While Norris denied it being a fight for the championship, McLaren certainly boosted this theory with their confidence boost from their leading of the Constructors championship, which they went on to win for the first time in 26 years.
Theorising sparked when Lando Norris won his first race of his seven year long career in Miami. Though a large gap to Verstappen, fans believed that Norris could finally be running for the championship. Lando has speed and generally consistent performance and has proven he is capable of good results. With a track record of qualifying well and consistently scoring podium finishes, he demonstrates his ability to perform under difficult circumstances considering where McLaren were when he first joined them.
While he does have talent and dedication, can he really take the pressure of a championship? Obviously a pretty automatic human reaction to failure is to beat yourself up about it. Maybe Lando doesn’t give up, but he still lets it get to him and it clearly takes a toll on his self esteem - therefore damaging his performance. Compare this to Max Verstappen for example. Max could get a bad result, complain about it, debrief it and move on with his life. Lando speaks out about how he can sometimes really let things linger in his mind and get to him. This is not a world champion mentality.
Lando Norris has been treated by his team, fans and media as McLaren’s number one driver for years. This being said, Oscar Piastri has been with the team since 2023 and throughout most of this time has been treated as number two. Performances never living up to the celebration Lando’s got, until now.
So far this season Oscar has won three out of five races. Successfully surpassing four-time world champion, Max Verstappen, to reach victory. Piastri currently leads the championship for the first time and is 10 points ahead of his teammate, whom he overtook in the standings. Did you know he’s also the first Australian to lead?
The way Oscar acts and reacts to things is something of how Kimi Räikkönen was. Some fans and even media reporters have nicknamed Oscar ‘the iceman’, just as they did with Kimi, reflecting on his unbothered attitude to racing.
Piastri has displayed his ability to keep his head up and look forward following bad performance, unlike Lando who dwells. He’s a very calm and calculated driver. He knows what he wants, and he knows exactly how to get it.
You can see that, finally, Oscar is getting the recognition he deserves in his career, and it is coming to light that maybe Norris isn’t the number one at McLaren after all.
Let's compare to Max again. While Verstappen isn’t the most calm and collected driver ever, most of the time he can spot what went wrong and recognise what he can do to improve. Lando can do this too, but most of the time with self-deprecation. Oscar however, doesn’t usually look like he cares all that much about it. This is a man who knows how to move ahead unbothered, it’s about realising that one little mistake or taint in his performance doesn’t define his entire career in Formula One.
None of this is to say that Lando shouldn’t be sharing his struggles with mental health, but rather that maybe by showing the world how racing mistakes are getting to you isn’t proving yourself as championship material. It’s blatantly obvious that Oscar is mentally a lot stronger than Lando. Lando tends to make more mistakes when under pressure, while Oscar keeps calm throughout and maybe makes the odd mistake here and there, but overall performs just as well as normal.
It should have never been said that last year was a title fight between Verstappen and Norris, because this now puts Lando in a position where it looks like he’s now consistently underperforming due to people’s standards being so high.
McLaren has a lineup of two amazing drivers, but Oscar Piastri would better suit the title of world champion.

Piastri Storms Ahead in Bahrain
Oscar Piastri wins in Bahrain after leading many laps of the race. Making this his second win of the season.
Russel held off Norris by a tight few seconds ensuring his second place finish.
Red Bull struggling with issues to do with pit stops, wasting precious time with faulty exit lights
Ferrari just not quite quick enough to retain that closeness to the front of the pack.
Ollie Bearman making up 10 whole places, finishing tenth after starting last on the grid.
Sainz having to unfortunately retire due to damage sustained to his Williams after contact with Yuki Tsunoda.
Prior to his retirement from the race, we had a thrilling battle between him and Hamilton - the man that replaced him at Ferrari - which ended in Hamilton eventually pushing forward and getting his way.
-
As predicted, we had a Mercedes podium. Not Kimi, but George successfully securing this for the team.

Bahrain GP Race Predictions
See the starting grid
We've been seeing some strong performance from Mercedes recently, and with qualifying results, this weekend is looking promising for the team.
The Mercedes drivers currently sit at 4th and 5th on the WDC standings. Kimia Antonelli gained fastest lap in Japan, just last week.
Could this be the weekend that Rookie Kimi Antonelli storms ahead? He will need to hold a good defence against Norris, who sits behind him on the starting grid.
Warm conditions may prove difficult for 4-time world champ Max Verstappen to bring his Red Bull back up from starting position P7.

Cadillac F1 Team Confirmed for 2026
It's been officially confirmed that the Cadillac Formula One Team are set to be the 11th team on the grid in 2026.
The Cadillac team are backed by TWG Motorsports and General Motors (GM). - These supporting companies were thanked by Formula One's CEO himself, Stefano Domenicali, who said "I want to thank GM and TWG Motorsports for their constructive engagement over many months and look forward to welcoming the team on the grid from 2026 for what will be another exciting year for Formula 1.”
Cadillac's Team principal will be Graeme Lowdon, who has been involved in motorsport since the 90s.
Utilising his ties to Virgin Group, he assisted Richard Branson in the founding of the Virgin Racing F1 team that soon became Marussia, then Manor.
Lowdon parted ways with Manor when the team folded. But when Andretti began its F1 plans, Lowdon was brought in as an advisor. This now has him in the F1 team principal role for 2026.
To read more in-depth detail about who all is behind the scenes at Cadillac, I recommend this article
Now, with a new F1 team, this of course means 2 entire new seats open up. This gives a whole new range of driving opportunities to those without a seat in 2025, as well as rookies.
Fans would love to see the likes of Daniel Ricciardo brought back in 2026, however Ricciardo has already ruled out a move to Cadillac or any other teams when asked about the matter in December. "Nah, I'm done," Daniel stated.
Valtteri Bottas is another fit candidate for Cadillac, after being dropped by Sauber last year and now only stepping into the role of reserve driver for his old team, Mercedes.

What's the pyjama situation at the GPDA strike sleepover?
George: Has an intense mental battle between full button up collared pyjamas to Remain Professional as the union rep, and his inherent need to be shirtless... He goes with the full collared get-up in the end but unbuttons the top by the end of the night. He does wear socks to bed.
Lewis: Silk pyjamas, obviously, could be worn as a full outfit and would be the most fashionable outfit on media day, easily. He has an eye mask and earplugs and WILL be using them.
Lando: Giant hoody, the pink one, hood up, sleeves over hands. Skinny joggers.
Oscar: Shorts, obviously. He was actually planning on going shirtless but gets self-conscious when most people aren't so overheats in a T-shirt all night.
Valtteri: Has been specifically told he can't sleep naked and he's not happy about it. Wears a onesie.
Zhou: All black, stylishly cut matching pyjamas. Cat socks.
Pierre and Esteban: Show up with matching pyjamas. They did NOT plan this.
Yuki: Is a bit miffed because he WOULD have worn matching pyjamas with Pierre. Sleeveless tank and boxers.
Liam: Lightning McQueen character pyjamas.
Max: He will be sleeping in a Red Bull polo and jeans because he is technically At Work.
Checo: Is inundated with pyjama sponsorships but instead wears a meme t-shirt about himself.
Alex: Wow what a coincidence he JUST launched Albon pets pyjamas!
Franco: He WILL be sleeping shirtless and he WILL be stretching and flexing. Will try to get the mattress next to Lewis.
Charles: Wears tailored pyjamas with bottoms that are really baggy but also cinch in his waist. He still has to wear all his sponsor bracelets.
Carlos: Has a nose peg for snoring. Sleeps in only boxers despite the fact that they were told to be decent. You know he's kicking the covers off in his sleep.
Nico and Kmag: On purpose coordinate to wear matching white-tshirt-grey-sweatpants. Will be going to sleep asap.
Fernando: Wears a robe that's tied justttt tight enough that it's never actually indecent but it's threatening to open all night. Velvet slippers.
Lance: Wants to match with Fernando but only has a cozy flannel robe which he keeps fully tied at all times. Bunny slippers.
