Photographing the final piece
I tried to experiment with all kinds of ways to photograph it. I tried to use a machine thats got two light sources at the two sides and they are moveable so I can experiment with different amounts and ways of light. I also used a light box to try to get the light from the bottom and so it makes more shadows and gives more contrast. I also tried bending the paper to make it look more interesting with the colours and light. I also tried to only take a picture of it at the window so the sun is the only light source. Eventually the ones that had the best lighting and contrast and smaller amounts of shadow turned out to be the best.

Stitching my book
I used a saddle stitch binding technique because I thought it was perfect for my slim children's book. If the book was  wider I would’ve tried perfect binding which is the one when you have to use PVA glue to bind it together: https://www.thoughtco.com/what-is-perfect-binding-1077757
I really like this technique and soon I might try to create a book with it.

Bookbinding
There are many ways to stitch a book together. Here are some examples:
Tumblr media
Here are some books that I really like. I love how you can do it the way you want to. It is pretty easy to find a way to do it so it appeals to you and your style. I love the fact that you can make it look really complicated and it still looks nice and organised.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My book is going to be slim so I can not really make it look this nice but I think I am just going to use easy saddle stitching for it. Also, I don't think that this type of stitching would be suitable for a children's books. Maybe for an older audience.
I know that I definitely want to try to make a book one day. Something like these one so I can make it look really nice and interesting.

Quentin Blake -cartoonist
Tumblr media
His work is really simple but very effective. Seemingly he uses ink and watercolours to create his artwork.
“Quentin has written or illustrated over 300 books, and this number is still growing.”  -https://www.quentinblake.com/books
He started drawing ever since he was young. He then went to Chelsea Art School as a part-time student where he was learning more about painting and drawing rather than illustrating.  But firstly he wanted to study English.

Book inspiration
Tumblr media
Harold and the Purple Crayon
by Crockett Johnson
Basically the story is about a little baby who draws a world of his own and he takes the reader through a journey.
The creator draws the character, and the character also draws the world. This is basically what I want to do with my character. I want to draw it and in the story the character draws and colours as well.
My character would draw and colour her dad, not a world.
Overall this book was one of the inspirations to make the book this way. I want to be able to let myself just come up with the ideas on how to draw and create the characters I don’t want to take someone else’s idea or style.

Typography as art research
Life is not a Rehearsal: “Marquees” by Jenny Holzer, 1993
Tumblr media
“In 1993, the movie theatres in 42nd Street in New York were abandoned and the whole neighborhood was still filled with pushers and prostitutes. During the few months before the theatres were torn down, artist Jenny Holzer (read also her “15 Inflammatory Essays” on Socks) rearranged the marquees with some of her signature works, the “truisms“, for the Creative Time’s 42nd Street Art Project.
The Truisms are bold statements usually decontextualized from their medium which blend with the media landscape or appear in public spaces. Some are cynical commentaries, other question common ways of thinking. In the installation “Marquees” they become a farewell to a part of New York which soon would have been substituted with the Time Square that we know today.”

Minimalist poster artist research
Chungkong Art
“Chungkong is a Netherlands based designer. His fun work stands out for a simple and humorous language, demonstrating great ingenuity and imagination.” - https://displate.com/chungkong
I really like his work I think he is one of the bests. I am not sure what his real name is, but he sells his work online.
His designs are really effective and well thought out. He usually brings the physical and the psychological elements together in his pieces. Plus he also adds a quote for each piece of work.
Example:
Shaun of the dead: The blood represents the psychological side of it, because it is about zombies and when you think about movies blood is one of the first things you think of.
Tumblr media
The other example is Matrix: He used the core purpose of the two pills as a psychological reminder, and the fact that he used it to show it physically on the poster as the picture. The quote also represents the scene where everything started.

Sarah Western - photogram research
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Univeristy of Colorado, Boulder and Master's in Art Education at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis  and she got her K-12 art education certification. She seems to love art and she seems  to be really committed. She does a great job. The way she creates photograms is really nice and powerful. Her ideas are well thought out and effective.
