In the middle of the meeting with the new rookies, Reno slams his hands down onto the table. The rookies gawk at him, startled out of their discussions, some seeming to shrink into themselves, no doubt expecting a tirade from the vice-director of the Turks. Tseng makes a note of their names to review their files. Maybe desk jobs might suit them better than field assignments if they're this easily cowed by someone as unthreatening as Reno.

2021 Writing (Year in Review)

It’s been a while since I did one of these. I flaked on the 2020 one because idk, depression and burnout I guess? 🤪 I’m starting this year on a higher note, so let’s see what that means for me in writing terms.

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted? 

More, actually. I wanted to take a break from writing to refill my batteries but then I let myself be roped back into exchange fandom again. Maybe this year I can manage to stay away, at least until I have more confidence in my writing again.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

Pairing: Red XIII/Aerith, probably.

Genre: High School AU, if it counts as a genre.

Fandom: Genshin Impact.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. 

My most popular is actually the one that makes me happiest, but at the same time, I can’t take all the credit for it since it’s a fic based on another fic. So I’ll go with:

so essential you feel to me now (FFVII), a RufuSeph fics I wrote for bulletproof that made me stupidly happy.

Story most underappreciated by the universe? 

All of my RufuSeph fics? It’s such an underappreciated ship xD Specifically:

a kiss I can't resist - the one that kicked off the high school AU nonsense. Can’t remember if it’s any good beyond the halfway point, but it’s one of my least kudos-ed fics.

Story that could have been better?

Most of them? I have a terrible habit of writing too close to a deadline and then having to rush the ending.

Saddest story? 

this offering of a scarlet wound (Genshin: ZhongXiao, 740w). Character death. Though I’m guessing life is a conditional clause (FFVII: one-sided Zakkura) might be a close second because it’s hanahaki.

Most fun?

I got to confess, my hair is a mess (FFVII: Zakkura). Just Zack messing around with hair products and Cloud being charmed.

Most fucked-up story? 

Depends on your definition of fucked-up? I wrote Red XIII/Aerith forced bestiality and RufuSeph consensual guro - both are fucked-up in different ways, although they don’t make my fucked-up meter ding as they’re pretty straightforward lol

Oh, I know: these contradictions in kinship (DCU)! Damian basically rapes Dick while he’s asleep but when Dick wakes, he’s totally into it. So much implied grooming and fucked-up “family” dynamics going on in the background.

Hardest story to write?

Chocobo Chocolates (FFVII: RufuSeph, 5.5k). It was written for worldbuilding ex and that’s what made it so hard: having to add worldbuilding. I mean, a lot of the worldbuilding details were provided by my recip / beta @neurotoxia and still it was like scraping myself raw from the inside. I love the fic and am proud of it, but man, did it fight me.

Easiest/most fun story to write? 

My days are numbered (Locked Tomb: Griddlehark, 553w). Just a silly birthday bash crack treat.

Top five scenes you would like to see illustrated:

Can I cheat and say anything? Any of my faves kissing? I don’t really think in “scenes” so i can’t remember if I wrote any. It’s just vibes and ruminating.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? 

Hm, I felt like I was playing it fairly safe most of the time. Until ravaged came along. I really pushed my limits with that one, in terms of style, content and length. Many of the scenes that are in there I did not think I could actually write until I was writing them haha.

Even writing a thing based on someone’s else’s killer fic was a huge risk for me because I’m an anxious mess who thinks everyone hates what I do. But my recip was the absolute best about it, so the experience was rewarding in so many ways.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

I don’t rightly know. This is perhaps not a goal, but more of a wish, but I’d love to have fics drafted, edited, and polished before they’re due.
