James is South Asian. but in canon, he’s portrayed as a white, rich, pureblood, heterosexual and cisgender male. or is he?

as you (should) know, South Asian people exist on a wide spectrum of skin tones. “light-skinned” South Asians often have skin tones similar to Europeans.

James’s parents migrated from South Asia and were “lucky” enough to “pass” as white in the racist environment of ‘50s Britain. instead of correcting assumptions about their family, they let everyone believe they were white purebloods.

they changed their names to traditional pureblood ones passed down for centuries, “Fleamont,” “Euphemia,” they changed their surname to disguise themselves as “Potters” — common for both Muggles and wizards, therefore not on the list of “the sacred 28.” from Asia, they brought with them their invisibility cloak, inherited through their family for generations with the story that it was given to them by Yama (god of death). (the tale of death and the 3 brothers has no specific setting; many countries could have their own versions.)

the Potters worked to earn themselves a living, managing to gain a respected position in British wizarding society. (the belief of them being “white purebloods” may have helped.)

they called their son a British name, taught him to simply go along with it when people thought of him as a white pureblood, and tried to raise him to conform as much as possible to “white” stereotypes in the hopes that society would wholly accept him. as in, they encouraged his confidence to the point of arrogance. they taught him to always stand strong, don’t let anyone walk all over him. they cheered him on with everything he did. he should aim high, participate in every activity and achieve 100%. failure wasn’t an option for people of colour in a predominantly white society. to be treated as equal, they must be better.

as he grew, James continued to present as a white, rich, pureblood, heterosexual and cisgender male. it gave him privilege, advantage, power. his family didn’t have those sorts of things before. because they weren’t white. they hadn’t been rich. they weren’t pureblood. and James’s immediate attraction and persistent harassment of Lily Evans were clear signs of compulsory heterosexuality and toxic masculinity.

but a sign that James may not be white: according to canon, he has naturally curly, jet black hair.
