one song every day - vol IV
What’s up? Another month has come to an end, and once again I forgot to upload some days and I'm now delayed. Getting up to date and not apologizing for it is my favorite activity atm. The playlist on Spotycrap is of course, at the bottom.
vol IV spans from November 10th to December 11th, 2022
1. a favorite song you discovered from a TV show: Big White Elephant by In-Flight Safety - They have great music. Thanks The Office US for this amazing song. It appears on Episode 12, Season 8, at around 18:56, when Robert California looks at everybody and realizes that the party he's bought the house for is right in front of him, maybe just not as crazy. All the music on this episode is pretty good, actually.
2. a song that motivates you: CTRL by Technoboy, Tuneboy and DJ Isaac - Whether it's the main drop, or the reverse bass one, this song has everything to motivate me and just go wild. I really like hardstyle like this
3. a song to listen to while working: The Look by Metronomy - What a great band, thanks internet for showing me a masterpiece
4. a song perfect when it's raining: Her Life by Two Feet - Some would consider the song sexy, but what I hear are the pizzicati on the violin, much like raindrops
5. a song that makes you dance: Nadie Sabe Bailar by Entrelineas - Ironic that the song is called 'Nobody knows how to dance" and the music video is exactly the opposite, people dancing, not so well but dancing still. Also ironic that it makes you move
6. a song from your childhood: Run Away With Me by Carly Rae Jepsen - Remember that vine? Yesh.
7. a song while working out: Taste the Night by Going Deeper ft. Ryan Konline on vocals - Whenever you see me skating at La Sabana, this one is on my playlist
8. a song that soothes you: The Space In Between by Jan Blomqvist - There is something to this tune that I can't describe other than like a fresh, cold sip of water in a hot sunny day.
9. a song without words: Sirius by The Alan Parsons Project - Playing this song without 'Eye in the Sky' right after, should be a punishable offense
10. a song that puts you to tears: Gravity by Sara Bareilles - This right here is really personal, but people who know me in depth know that's really hard for me to cry, even if I'm sad, and a lot of times I just wanna cry and it just doesn't happen, and it sucks arse big time. I'm not even ashamed of crying, I just can't. Gravity makes really no difference, but it's the closest I can get.
11. a song you will play on your wedding: As The World Caves In by Matt Maltese - Thanks clem turner, because thanks to his covers I was introduced to Matt Maltese and his amazing music
12. a hit song from the year you were born: Otherside by Red Hot Chili Peppers - One of the first rock bands that I listened to by myself, instead of my mum showing me the music. For more info on that, take a look at this post
13. a classic song you like: Mars from The Planets composed by Gustav Holst - I don't know what they were referring to with 'classical' but my understanding was classical music so, yes. One of my favorite pieces of music
14. a song while commuting: Toro by Liily - Liily is amazing. Other rock band that I really really love. I may actually cover them on #curatedbyhatto: the music some day
15. a popular song from a different country: No Voy en Tren by Charly García - Argentinian rock is without a doubt one of the most important parts of latinamerican music. On a funny note, I heard this song for the first time when it was covered by another musician when I was watching Yo soy Betty, la fea
16. a song for a creative boost: As the World Caves in (Wuki remix) which at the same time is a cover from Sarah Cothran - Well, this song is so good that it appears twice on this list. What can I say?
17. a song that makes you confident: Sax Things by Sunday Noise and Lena Glish - A masterpiece that I discovered thanks to blanc. If you're into tech house, you should him out.
18. a song that's on repeat: Did I Make You Up? by half•alive - half•alive was my most listened to artist this year on spotify. No surprise they were, but surprising it wasn't twenty øne piløts, tbh. They're still two of my three fav bands alongside Pierce the Veil
19. a song by a local artist: Marte by Sábado Santo - Seeing them live was a one of a kind experience. Check them out
20. a song you sing in the car: MANTRA by Bring Me The Horizon - I don't have a car but I remember singing this song with a friend when we were in his car
21. a song that puts you to sleep: truce by twenty øne piløts - Soothing. Perfect. Soft. Tyler and Josh. That was a rhyme, nice
22. a song that reminds you of your friends: Flamingo by Kero Kero Bonito - My friends are a bunch of golden retriever (like me) or chihuahua energy folks, and I think this song sums up the constant, neverending chaos we represent, and the fun that we have
23. a song for a road trip: My Own by Chris Lorenzo - Imagine the car starts going through an empty highway when the beat drops. You get it now?
24. the #1 song on the day you were born: Bent by Matchbox Twenty - The guy's voice reminds me of another vocalist but I can't wuite put my finger on it
25. a song that makes you sentimental: Lullabies by Yuna - I discovered the Adventure Club remix first, then the original version, and with that I was into the world of triphop and I could never come out. I didn't want to, anyway
26. a song you love singing along to: The Great Escape by Boys Like Girls - Tell me, with a straight face, that you can resist singing this every time you listen to it. You can't, I know, I can't either, I have to sing it. Oh, I also discovered this song by accident when looking for blink-182, about 12 years ago
27. a song by your favorite boy band: Big Time Rush by Big Time Rush - Not that creative of me to chose this one but I really loved the TV show and their music
28. a favorite song you learned from a movie: Pocketful of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield - It appears on "The Ugly Truth" when Abby and Colin go to the river, on a car. Great album by Natasha, as well
29. a song by your favorite solo artist: Take A Chance by Oliver Heldens - It was hard to chose one and in the future I would probably change it, but for now, this one will do
30. a song from your first concert: take 2 sugars by The Loser's Service - Another great Costarican band
you can find the playlist here and if you wanna take the challenge too, here's the pic:

Laura Branigan - Self Control
Hello! I am soooo behind (I'm basically uploading 3 songs every 3 weeks, so that every time I can work on this shiz is a shitton of work, oh well) (second edit: I have to work on 5 songs today. Bye bye free Sunday)
Laura Branigan is our second featured artist on this 80s month, with the song 'Self Control'. Such an amazing track, which showcases Laura's beautiful voice. What is there to know about her and her music?
About the artist
Laura Branigan was a singer, songwriter and actress from New York (US). As it seems to be normal for most of the US population, Laura had to start supporting herself right after becoming an adult (which at least was a bit more manageable in the 60s and 70s) and while doing so waiting tables, studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
You must be tired of hearing this, but again, I won't transcribe the whole wiki article on my blog. You can read it where it's linked, not before I say, and I must do so, that Laura deserved way more recognition than she had, and as it turns out with a lot of other artists, here most famous song may not actually be the best one, but that is just an opinion.
Even if I just said that, I was happy to read that there is an award at Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York (where she grew up), called the 'Laura Branigan Memorial Scholarship' and it is given annually to a senior for excellence in the performing arts.
Pretty cool that they support people with a scholarship, so financially, and even cooler that it is related to art, unlike most others that are only given to students successful in sports, maths or sciences.
Laura released 7 studio albums, according to the wiki. One of them, and the one that contains 'Self Control' as its second track, is her second LP also titled 'Self Control', released on 1984.
About the song
It came as a surprise to me that 'Self Control' is not an original song, but a cover from the Italian singer Raf. However, it was all in good terms, taking in count that for example, Giancarlo Bigazzi, the same writer for this song, also co-wrote 'Gloria', another Laura's song, her most famous one actually.
Any meaning?
Yes, and this time it is not only my take (though it was pretty similar to what I found), but actually Bryan Buss' from allmusic.com (which the Wiki cited, so)
(It is) about finding sex in the seamy side of town, (and) sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. The song itself works, but Branigan was never a sex bomb, so the fact that she pulls it off is indicative of her power as a performer.
I mean, do I have to say anything else? RIP Laura, you'll always be remembered with love ♥

one song every day - vol III
What's up? Another month has ended and it's time to finally release this post and its playlist (which as always will be at the bottom of the songs)
vol III spans from October 10th to November 9th, 2022
1. A song with a one word title: Threshold by Sungazer - "D'ya like jazz?" ~Barry B. Benson.
2. A song you like from the 60s: Happy Together by The Turtles - One of the songs I've liked since I'm a kid
3. A song that reminds you of spring: Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles - I'm not an avid listener to The Beatles, but I really like some of their music. One of those songs is 'HCtS'. The metric changes, the very bright tone of the guitar almost like a xylophone, the organ that can be heard, all of it makes it a perfect piece of art, no wonder why it's one of the most famous song by them
4. A song with a number in the title: 17 by MK ft. Carla Monroe - Again my OCD tells me to re-interpret the phrase as a song that contains a number, not that is only a number. Oh well
5. A song from a soundtrack: Out Of Control by Hoobastank - From the soundtrack of the PS2 game MX Unleashed
6. A song to be played at your wedding: Tie Me Down by Gryffin ft. Ellie Duhé - I really really like an acoustic cover I found on youtube as well, but the slowed version would do it too
7. A song you like from the 70s: Rock with You by Michael Jackson - What can be said about MJ that hasn't been said already?
8. A song by an artist who passed away: Silhouettes by Avicii - Avicii's death hit me so bad back in the day. Will remember him for eternity
9. A song that reminds you of summer: Walking In The Dark by Metronomy - I think it reminds me of summer because that's when I mostly listened to it
10. Your favourite song to dance to: Casio by Jungle - How can you not want to dance with a masterpiece like this playing?
11. A song that reminds you of someone: willow by Taylor Swift - Reminds me of one of my best friends, Danny ♥
12. A song you like from the 80s: Hands Up by Ottawan - One of the most iconic songs of all time, imo
13. A perfect road trip song: Vivamos Lento by Pasajeros - Some Costarican music here, perfect to go around the country and whatnot
14: A song in a foreign language: Lascia che io sia by Nek - Laura non c'è is really good, but I feel like this one is way better
15. Your guilty pleasure song: I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred - I can bet a slice of pizza that you didn't know the name of the artist
16. A song that reminds you of autumn: My Monday Throne by Sunset Rollercoaster - In all fairness I haven't experienced autumn ever because there's no autumn season here in Costa Rica, but this song kinda reminds me of it. We'll check on it in the future
17. Your favorite duet or collab: On My Mind (VIP Mix) by Preditah ft. Jorja Smith - As always, I don't really have a fave duet, but I do like this one a lot. I like garage music a lot
18. A song with a colour in the title: Purple Sunshine by Leftwing : Kody (ft. Leo Stannard) - What a banger, Leftwing : Kody are one of my favorite DJ duos out there
19. Your favourite song to sing along to: Helena Beat by Foster The People - My favorite song from my favorite album from FTP. There's something magical in kids choirs in songs, this repeats in D.A.N.C.E by Justice, for example
20. A song you like from the 90s: Wonderwall by Oasis - The second song I discovered from Oasis, and thinking I didn't actually like it at first, oh wow
21. A song with no words: MTI by Koreless - I could've gone with a totally instrumental song, but I chose to go with one that has vocals but not words per se. I also love Koreless
22. A song by a band that broke up: Losing Patience by Operator Please - Could I be more obsessed with this band?
23. A song that gives you hope: Phases by Ben Böhmer and Spencer Brown - Thanks Shir for showing me an awesome song that lifts me up when I feel down
24. A song you like from the 00s: Caught By The River by Doves - Another band I'm obsessed with. I discovered this song watching the OC
25. A song that makes you sad: Hold Me Now by Red - Some dark memories come with this tune
26. Your favourite song to dance to (again?): Summer Nights by SIAMÉS and Barbie Williams - I just wish the ending part with Barbie singing solo was longer
27. A song that reminds you of winter: Follow the Rules... by Laurin Hunter - Thanks instagram ads for one of like 100 amazing songs I've discovered in the past 4 years
28. A song from your childhood: Love Generation by Bob Sinclair ft. Gary Pine - Let's try to make the story short. In 2006 or 2007, they used this song for the national 'most beautiful woman' contest here in Costa Rica (yk, where they chose one to go to Miss Universe). That was it. I really liked this song. I was actually talking to my gf one of these days about this and realized I've liked electronic music since I was born, without realizing
29. Your favourite cover of a song: American Boy covered by Juno Roome (originally by Estelle) - hasoyi has also been a great source to discover new music. Check her out!
30: Your current favourite song: What You Know by Two Door Cinema Club - Idk, I just really like it right now and makes me dance every time I listen to it
you can find the playlist here and if you wanna take the challenge too, here's the pic:

Moon Martin - Bad News
Hey! Again it's me with yet another post, this time the first of four songs to be featured this month in curated by hatto: 80s month.
To be fair, I'm not an avid listener of 80s rock and similar genres, but there are some songs that I like, and some that I love, one of them, of course, 'bad news'. Who was its author and what is going on with this track? Let's take a look:
About the artist
Moon Martin, born John David Martin, was a musician and composer from Altus, Oklahoma (US), who received a lot of critical acclaim, but lacked his well deserved recognition (precisely one of the reasons I chose this song, because he's underrated)
And as I've stated it previously (even if Moon was somewhat underground), there is the wiki article so I won't copy-paste it
About the song
Bad News talks from the perspective of the one who sings the song, saying they know of their own internal rotten self, how they know they are up to no good, they recognize that they're bad news.

there is some great 80s music, u kno?
Though I usually listen to a lot of electronic music, bedroom pop and pop from the early and mid 2000s, there is also a lot of music from the 80s that I really love.
On that same thought, I was originally gonna publish an 80s song on October 9th but I decided to change it and actually take a whole month for this great era of music.
You can expect one 80s song every Sunday of November. Some pop, some rock, you know my taste is wide, to say the least.
Oh, and if you haven't noticed, there are basically 3 waves of curation on my blog:
songs that I like
whole albums/EPs
themed months
Always something new, cool and refreshing. Let me know what themed months you'd like to hear. So far I have ideas like: Jazz, 90s, 70s, sitcoms, early and mid 2000s movies, drama tv shows and CR bedroom pop.

Castlecomer - Fire Alarm (ft. Welshly Arms)
Hey! Castlecomer arrives this week to curated by hatto with their hit 'Fire Alarm' (this time featuring the US band Welshly Arms). Such a masterpiece. Anyway,
About the bands
Castlecomer
Castlecomer (named after the Irish city where 4 of the member's family emigrated from) is a band from Sydney (AU) formed somewhere around 2013 by four cousins and a friend, comprising
Bede Kennedy: vocals, guitar, shaker Tommy Kennedy: lead guitar, vocals Pat Kennedy: drums, vocals Joe Kennedy: bass, vocals Joe Neely: keys, synth, vocals
Castlecomer started playing around 2013. In 2017 they played at South by SouthWest (SXSW), 3 days in a row, which catapulted them to fame even more than they already were. They had previously moved to Nashville, Texas (US) and had a growing fanbase. They have shared the stage with bands such as The Score (which I'll probably cover soon)
In October 2018 they released their first album: Castlecomer
Welshly Arms
Welshly Arms is a band from Cleveland, Ohio (US), formed back around 2013 by:
Sam Getz: lead vocals, guitar Brett Lindemann: keyboard, vocals Jimmy Weaver: bass, vocals Mikey Gould: drums Bri Bryant: vocals Jon Bryant: vocals
Their music is featured in trailers for two films: The D Train (starring Jack Black) and The Hateful Eight (directed by Quentin Tarantino)
The band's song "Legendary" has also featured at the end of an episode of Shades of Blue and was also used in the menu soundtrack of the popular video game Asphalt 9: Legends, such a great and recognized game in the industry.
They have played on several festivals, and so far, all their material has been recorded in Cleveland. Keep it local folks.
Any meaning?
The song is a chant of the present youth to anybody that wants to hold them back: they will do whatever they want, and if they'll be judged anyway, might as well make it big.

Keane - Nothing in My Way
Hey, hey, hey! It's me again with a new song curated just and right for ya, this week we've got one of the songs I love the most and that's really important to me because it brings back really good memories.
'Nothing in My Way' by Keane is already uploaded to my youtube channel and you can go listen to it now
So,
About the band
Keane (not to be confused with Kane) is a band from East Sussex (ENG) formed back in 1995 (just realized that was almost 30 years ago jfc)
The band is comprised by:
Tom Chaplin: lead vocals, electric/acoustic guitar Tim Rice-Oxley: piano, synthesizers, bass guitar, backing vocals Richard Hughes: drums, percussion, backing vocals Jesse Quin: bass guitar, acoustic/electric guitar, backing vocals
and formerly also Dominic Scott, who left in 2001, and was a guitarist.
They met while at highschool and formed the band, and 9 years later would come their international success with their debut album 'Hopes and Fears', in 2004.
Their history is really really extense, and as always, there is no point in basically resuming their wiki article, so we'll keep it here. Check them out, they have a website too!
About the song
'Nothing in My Way' holds a very special place in my heart because it marked the start of the post-covid era, after the restrictions started to be lifted here in Costa Rica and I could finally go out and skate again. Someone that I don't talk to anymore showed me this masterpiece. Not complaining, they left me something good.
The intro, the sounds, the chords, the lyrics, the energy. It reminds me of those warm afternoons of December here in Costa Rica. It takes me to a happy place. Take a listen, you will feel it too.
Any meaning?
According to a couple sources only (none official tho!) the song seems to talk about someone with internal issues that doesn't talk about them. Someone else knows about said issues, but says the person that suffers from them looks too good, maybe concerned?
Makes sense to me, tbh.

The Griswolds - NICE TO MEET YA!
The date for this post is definitely not realistic. I scheduled them for certain dates but of course, as always, I try to do a million things at once and expect my days to have like 69 (nice) hours so that I can fit everything that I wanna do. Anyway,
Hey! Thanks for reading my blog again, this week's song is one of those tracks that you can perfectly label as 'pop'. It fits the genre so well, so perfectly. It's called 'NICE TO MEET YA! (yes it seems to be written in all caps) by the Australian band 'The Griswolds'. As usual, as normal,
About the band
'The Griswolds' is a band formed in 2012 in Sidney (AU). The band has suffered a number of changes and scandals (which I'm just becoming aware of) like when on March 2017, Tim John, their bass player, left the band or when lead singer Chris Whitehall was accused of sexual misconduct by several fans in September 2020. To be completely fair, they seem to not have a stable lineup right now, and information is mostly scarce.
I chose to keep the post but not any other song from here on. You know there's this ongoing discussion about separating the artist from the art, whether or not you should separate them in some cases, never to do it, to do it always, to do it depending on the artist (which some people seem to be biased on, rooted in racism). It's a shit ton of stuff that we'll leave for a different time. The song is good and that's what I'll care about here, no more than that.
About the song
'NICE TO MEET YA!' was a single, which then was added to TG's first EP 'All My Friends'. It has a very upbeat sound and the melodic line is unique to say the least. I really really like it and you will surely surely do to.
Any meaning?
I mean, pretty straightforward right? A guy telling a significant other (probably a girl) that he wants to be with them and move on with the relationship, explaining how he showed what was important or interesting for him, something that is reserved for few people

one song every day - vol II
Hey! It's me, the Deadman. I explained what I'm doing on Vol I's post, go take a look. Now, let's start:
vol II spans from September 14th to October 9th, 2022
1. A song from your childhood: Amor del Bueno by Reily Barba - I remember listening to this and other songs when I was on my way to kindergarten, on the school bus. What a time, I was like 5 y/o!
2. A song that reminds you of your most recent ex-boyfriend/girlfriend: Nothing In My Way by Keane - At least she left me with some good music, not a total heartbreak (plus I'm with a great girl right now, my Star)
3. A song that reminds you of one/both of your parents: Hoy by Gloria Estefan - My mum, again.
4. A song that calms you down: Marshmallow by Amount - I really like soft deep house, like, really soft.
5. A song that is often stuck in your head: Fire Alarm by Castlecomer (ft. Welshly Arms) - I was actually listening to it today. The collab, the voices, the music, everything is so catchy and so perfect.
6. A song that reminds you of a best friend: Silhouette by KANA-BOON - It reminds me of my best friend, øslø
7. A song that reminds you of the past summer: Shy Away by twenty øne piløts - Yeah, summer is one of the only 2 seasons we have here, the shortest one but the one I like the most
8. A song that reminds you of your 'first love': The Judge by twenty øne piløts - I don't know why, maybe I listened to it way too often when I was with her?
9. A song that makes you hopeful: Missen Zou by Kraantje Pappie, Rolf Sanchez and Thomas Acda - I mean yes, the lyrics are kinda sad, but the melody is so upbeat and happy so it makes me hopeful, idk
10. A song by your favourite band: Cut My Lip by twenty øne piløts - Not my favorite tøp song, but one of the best ones (if not the best) of 'Trench'. I also really like Silent Sunrise's cover.
11. A song on the soundtrack of your favourite movie: First Step by Hans Zimmer - Before Interstellar I called a lot of other movies 'my favorite'. After watching it, I'm 101% sure no other movie would hit me as much. It really makes you question your own existence. Hans Zimmer is also my favorite movie score composer (and fav. classical composer too, I'd say)
12. The last song you heard: Las Veces Que Te Vi by Abbie - It was the last one. Really good song tho
13. A song that reminds you of a former friend: Finale by Madeon (ft. Nicholas Petricca) - Reminds of a former friend called Gabriel. Things didn't end in a sweet note (I mean it is a friendship breakup, there's no sweet note any time it ends) but he showed me a lot of cool music, including Daft Punk and Madeon. He left me with something good.
14. A song that reminds you of your boyfriend/girlfriend: JEKYLL & HIDE by Bishop Briggs (ft. White Panda) - She has showed me a lot of music, but this one is particularly good.
15. A song you love singing along to: Black And White Town by Doves - One of my favorite groups, and this song in particular is my favorite one (from my fave Doves album haha)
16. A song that has made you cry: Goodbye To A World by Porter Robinson - The among us edits were so sad. I know, kinda soft of me.
17. A song that makes you want to dance: Mr. Fear by SIAMÉS - I love them and I love this song. I'm of course making a playlist of music that throws me on the dancefloor.
18. A song that you love but rarely listen to: After Life by Tchami (ft. Stacy Barthe) - One of the first future house songs that I found (and one of the first future house tracks ever. Tchami is one of the three fathers of future house alongside Oliver Heldens and Don Diablo)
19. The first song alphabetically in your iPod/iTunes: A Cause Des Garçons (Riot in Belgium remix/Tepr remix) originally sung by Yelle. - So the actual first song is the RiB remix but instagram music doesn't have it. I used the second one which just happens to be the Tepr remix. Both appear on the playlist anyway.
20. The last song alphabetically in your iPod/iTunes: Zulu by Stephan Bodzin - Idk why numbers appear at the end after the Z, but I'll take Z as last. Stephan is an amazing musician and an inspiration to me.
21. Your favourite song: Holding On To You by twenty øne piløts - I, to be %100 honest, don't think I have a fave song, but for the effects, HOTY is my favorite song by my favorite band (well, one of my faves, because that top 1 is shared by like 5 bands)
22. A song that someone has sung to you: listen before i go by Billie Eilish - Someone that used to be my friend sung it to me at night once, it was very cool. I really liked her voice.
23. A song that you cannot stand to listen to: telepatía by Kali Uchis - There are a lot, actually, either it is because I don't like them musically or because the lyrics are bigoted (which I took in count to not give exposure to that type of music). This one is just one of them, I don't like the melody, I can't stand it.
24. A song that you have danced to with your best friend: Voyager by Analog Jungs - I even have a video. We were at a small festival in Atenas, Alajuela, CR. That was, tbh, one of the best days of my life. So chill, so good, so cool, and with my best friend.
25. A song that you could listen to all day without getting tired of: Aria Math by C418 - I've streamed this song a ridiculous amount of times. A lot of C418's now that I think about it.
you can find the playlist here and if you wanna take the challenge too, here's the pic:

BANKS - Gemini Feed
Heyoo! I totally didn't post two songs close to each other because I forgot to make last week's video. Not at all.
Anyway, this week's song is called 'Gemini Feed' by the US singer BANKS. It is a well known song, with millions of streams on multiple platforms, but it deserves even more recognition, imo. The lyric video is on youtube, as always.
About the artist
As mentioned before, BANKS is a very well known artist, and therefore creating a whole bio when there are a lot already would be futile. We'll then check her most important achievements and releases.
BANKS, born Jillian Rose Banks is a Californian (US) singer, songwriter and painter. She started writing her own songs and playing the piano when she was only 15 y/o; this prompted by a piano that she received as a gift from a friend to handle her parents divorce in a better way.
Jillian actually studied Psychology at the USC, and graduated with a thesis on children of divorced parents. While still at uni, and through a series of connections, her yet unreleased song 'Before I Ever Met You' was played on BBC Radio 1 (at this point I'm realizing that if your song is good and gets featured on BBCR1, you're very likely to get famous).
2013 saw the release of BANKS' first single: Work (ft. Lil Silva). After that, she has constantly released music, almost every year. Up to this date, BANKS discography spans more than 20 EPs/singles and 4 LPs.
Rose has opened for artists like The Weeknd, and appeared on festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo and Open'er. Her TV debut was on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which was very well received.
Go follow BANKS on instagram, twitter and of course youtube and spotify. Oh, she also has a website and is right now featured on an art gallery. A lot more here, too.
About the song
'Gemini Feeds' is the first song on BANKS second studio album 'The Altar' which was released on Sep. 30th, 2016. It reached the 17th position on Billboard 200, and was her second top 20 in the US.
Tbh I don't remember where I got this song from, but I fucking love it. I really really like the descending melody on the chorus, the synths that sound very future bassy, the drums which though appear as kinda minimalistic, are a fundamental part and a great base for the song. A well crafted track, a great opener. The lyrics are great too! Oh, hold on
Any meaning?
'Gemini Feeds' talks from the perspective of the woman, who talks to a past lover (possibly a man) that she gave her love to, but all he did was treat her like shit and make her feel inferior and that she was not important. Fortunately she got outta there and now sings from the top of the mountain, victorious and free from the cage of a shitty lover, if we can even call that 'love'.
☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊☿☿☿♊
I got a bit creative with the lyric video, just because I had time and I wanted to make something good. Don't get me wrong, I always wanna do something good, but a lot of times my mind is dry and I have little time, so I put out something still good, just not that flashy.
The inspo for the background was the overall idea of running away from someone that hurts you, but looking back afterwards to let them know what they lost.

I used another image for the last chorus, in case you want it and the clear, first one, here you go

Lucy Lu - Insomniac
What's good? Really thin sliced bread, for sure. Thanks for reading curated by hatto once again. This week's song is called Insomniac from the English musician/band Lucy Lu.
I'm gonna be honest, the info about Lucy Lu is very very scarce, therefore I had to get creative and full detecto-magnifier mode to find more about him. It was entertaining, tho.
About the artist:
Lucy Lu is the pseudonym under which London (ENG) producer Luke Bower performs and records as a solo artist/band. Now, this duality sounds weird at first, but starts to make sense if we think of better known artists like Brendon Urie/Panic! At the Disco, or Dayglow. It's that same kinda vibe.
Lucy Lu has been releasing music since 2017, starting with the single 'Outlines' (ft. Chelsea Carmichael), and from there, has kept a fairly consistent flow of music, releasing music every year, being 2018 and 2020 his most productive years yet.
Luke has worked with various other artist, for example on bass and keys for Nilüfer Yanya on her NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert, and with Puma Blue, which went on tour with uma as well. On that same thought, Luke collaborated with uma in 'bring me the mountain' and 'my soul within the house'.
About the song
In 2020, precisely, Luke was featured alongside other 5 musicians in the German minimalist music show COLORS. That performance was the one that introduced me to Lucy Lu, and to his amazing, wonderful music.
The live stuff has everything you could ask for, a trombone and a sax, a nice jazzy/souly rhythm and drums, the soft keys/synth and bass and of course Luke's impeccable yet relaxed playing and his soothing vocals and carefully written lyrics.
On top of all that, the outfits on the video are pretty cool, with everyone pretty much mismatching but in a good way. A commenter, Tracy Allen said "This is the dorkiest looking band and yet so cool at the same time! [...]" and I couldn't agree more.
I was able to find the name of all the musicians, so
Guitar, vocals: Our star, Lucy Lu/Luke Bower instagram, twitter, soundcloud and spotify
Saxophone: keikei carlita whitby @keahnnecarlita on tumblr, as well as instagram and soundcloud
Keys/synth and backing vocals: Harvey Causon youtube, instagram and spotify. Here's also his website.
Trombone: Misha Fox discogs, instagram and some colabs like on 'love is back' by Celeste or for Banger Factory in 'one more river'
Drums: Ellis Dupuy discogs, twitter, instagram, turns out he also plays with Puma Blue and Nilüfer Yanya. He also has a very cool website.
Bass and backing vocals: Gabriel Gifford soundcloud, instagram, twitter and a lot other places
Any meaning?
'Insomnia' tells us the story about 2 lovers, who, at least from his side, want to be together but are not confident enough to take the next step into it. He tells her (could be him, could be them) that if they were lovers they would still have their own space, but instead they stay away from each other, always thinking of coming together but never actually doing it. So close, yet so far.
As always, the meaning could be wrong, but that's just my take.
edit: Luke moved onto a different project, a spiritual successor of sorts, called 'SALPA'. You can find Luke here: spotify, youtube, twitter and instagram

Tango India - Azul
Hey! We've finally reached the last song of September. Does this mean that I'll only curate non-Costarican music from here and on? No, absolutely not. Actually, yesterday I found a playlist with a lot of small CR bands and artists, and I just have to say that I found a goldmine. I also created my own playlist, which is still in the works to be released, but it'll be soon, I promise.
Now, about this weeks song, it's called 'Azul (literally 'blue'), from the Costarican band Tango India, which is also the country code for CR planes, and the name of a nightclub that has a plane inside it. You can find the lyric video on youtube, as always, on hatto's dumpster youtube channel
Fun fact (not so funny, very mid): the volcano you can see on the background of the video and it's cover is the Arenal Volcano, here in CR, Alajuela province.
About the band
Tango India started when its 2 first members (and actually the only consistent ones) Felipe Solís and Juan Diego Villegas decided to form a band around the end of the 90s. In 98' they released their fist LP '¿dónde estás si no es aquí?' (which Azul is also part of) and in 99' they started polishing their live performances and added 3 other musicians: Gabriel Wiernik, Alonso Carballo and Marco Castro.
At the same time, the asked several Costarican radios for sponsor. Azul and Esperaré earned the group its takeoff. The label Líderes got them in touch with Sony Music for their second album 'Máquina del tiempo' [time machine] which was released in 2004. Then, they spent a good while in hiatus, and returned around 2008 for more live shows in San José (CR capital) but also in places like Naranjo, San Carlos and Grecia, just some of the locations outside San José downtown, which are often forgotten by artists.
2018 saw their 3rd album: Dios y Demonios [God and Demons], and after that we've seen a couple other singles being released, the latest one 'Let Your Light Shine' in 2021.
About the song
'Azul' is the 3rd track of TI's debut album ¿dónde estás si no es aquí? [where are you if not here?], and I'd say the one that Ticos remember the most when asked about the band.
It is a masterpiece for everything: its lyrics, its instrumentation, its melodies, its chemistry among the musicians, you name it. Combining traditional rock instruments like the electric guitar, bass or the drums with not so traditional stuff like a nylon guitar or its most distinctive sound, the violin, it creates a warm atmosphere throughout the song.
At around 3:04 we can hear an epic feeling bridge, which, to be honest, I wish was longer than it is; only to have the song come back to its main energy about 30 seconds later, leading to a great ending.
Any meaning?
Based on what JD Villegas said on an interview with a local newspaper about how the band decided to make music about love and its surrounding topics, we can almost 100% say for sure that this is a song about a past love interest, and how it is hard to get over a breakup.
You can follow Tango India on facebook, instagram and of course on spotify and youtube

one song every day - vol I
Hello again, it's me, the hat man.
If you follow me on instagram (and if you don't, you should) you've probably seen that I started doing a mini curation every day with the aid of those '30 days of music' images.
Precisely, I want to make a post explaining each of them briefly, along with a playlist. This is because I don't want the instagram stories to get overcrowded, so every time that I start a new one, I will delete the previous one and leave a link to its corresponding post. OCD? Well yes, of course.
So, let's start, let's get to it.
vol I spans from August 12th to September 10th, 2022
1. A song you love to sing along to: Bonsai by Polär
- I really like it, what can I say? It's really catchy.
2. A song you listen to while walking outdoors: Lost & Found by Corbu (ft. Jimi Goodwin)
- I was kinda biased on this one because I looked for the song for a while without remembering its name, then I found it and listened to it while walking to my workplace. I mean, it works, right?
3. A song by a boy band: Youngblood by 5 Seconds of Summer
- I like the metal cover by Maddison a lot better, but well, the original is good too.
4. A song by a girl group: Peek-A-Boo by Red Velvet
- I'm not way too deep into k-pop, but I like a couple songs here and there, and this one really got me because of the instrumental.
5. A song that reminds you of home: The Sign by Ace of Base
- It reminds me of my mum.
6. A song with a long title: two queens in a king sized bed by girl in red
- girl in red is sooooo good. There's really no explanation for this one 🤷♀️
7. A song you like from a movie: Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts
- It's from Cars, by Disney Pixar.
8. A song that makes you productive: Language I: Intuition by The Contorsionist
- Thanks Dave for showing me this song. I also discovered a great band because of it. Again, there's really not much to explain.
9. A song where you know all the lyrics: Si Pudiera by Manuel Medrano
- I obsessed over this song. Manuel voice is sooo soothing.
10. A song from the 80s: Bad News by Moon Martin
- Everything about this song is perfect. The riff, the voice, the lyrics, the changes of mood. UGH. SO GOOD.
11. A song that describes your college years: What's My Age Again by blink-182
- I mean yes, I am a college dropout, but I am still on my college years and still act like a dumb kid in some situations (and to be honest I don't want that to change, I like to have fun)
12. A song from the 2000s: Wherever You Will Go by The Calling
- If you know me you know I'm nostalgic for the years between like 1998 and 2006. Music on that period had a very cool feeling, and most romcoms I love were created back then.
13. A song you're afraid to admit you like: Transylvania by Iron Maiden
- I'm afraid to admit I like it because of all the dumb toxic culture and gatekeeping around music like this.
14. A song from the 90s: Kiss from a Rose by Seal
- Thanks again for an amazing song, mum.
15. A song with the best instrumental: Insomniac by Lucy Lu
- This one was tough, ngl, but Insomniac was the winner on this ocassion.
16. A song you loved but hate now: Eye of the Tiger by Survivor
- When I was 10 I loved it but it has been overused and now I can't bear it.
17. A song that puts you to sleep: chance with you by mehro
- I actually just play random mehro to sleep. He's so comforting.
18. A song that you discovered this month: Down by Hemlock Ernst
- I discovered it on August. I think I was just messing around, surfing artists on Spotify and this absolute masterpiece came across. Yes. Oh yes.
19. A song in a different language: Leven by Maan
- I really like music in Dutch, and specifically Maan is one of my favourite artists.
20. A song from the 10's: Ophelia by The Lumineers
- Some people hate this kinda music, you know, the stomp, clap, tambourine. I really like it (actually thinking of making a playlist of it)
21. A song you sing to in the shower: Monophobia by Deadmau5 (ft. Rob Swire)
- I spent all that day thinking of a song that I liked to sing to in the shower and nothing came to mind, so I used one that I like to listen to, though I don't know the lyrics. Its original mix is also like 10 min long so it helps me keep track of my shower time.
22. A song that was released this year: The Valley by Yotto
- Spotify recommends you music sometimes, and they definitely hit the nail with this one. Very good.
23. A song that makes you want to travel: Feels Like Summer by Childish Gambino
- My boss told me that I always pay attention to wording on instructions, so that I can know exactly what I’m being asked for, and provide more than 1 solution if needed. I did this here. I tried to think of a song that I would like to hear while on my way, but I couldn’t think of anything. Then I used my second interpretation of the phrase, so I thought of a song that I’d like to listen to while on my destination, in this specific case at a beach on the afternoon.
24. A song you used to hate but love now: Lovumba by Daddy Yankee
- I used to critique certain types of music, gatekeep and be arrogant. Thank God I’m not anymore, and I can actually listen to whatever the flip I want without caring about dumb people’s opinion. #reggaetonviejito
25. A song that reminds you of Christmas: You Make Winter Warm by Andrew Huang (ft. Dusty Lima)
- I mean, pretty literal. Go listen to the making of, it’s cool.
26. A song title that is all in uppercase: SHIMMER by Ocean Groove
- Me? An Emo kid in 2022? Yes, and I also just bought some Vans Era.
27. An underrated song: Lullabies of Love by Rose Ringed
- Rose Ringed in general, his approach to music is formidable.
28. A song that you've had stuck in your head: Everything Machine by half•alive
- one of my top 1, 3 favorite bands. My favorite song by half•alive, probably?
29. A song that makes you feel sexy: meow by lvusm
- No song could make me feel sexy, sorry, but I really like lvusm’s music.
30. A remix of a song that you like more than the original: My Head Is A Jungle (MK Remix), originally by Wankelmut (ft. Emma Louise) [which at the same time is a rework of Jungle by Emma Louise]
- One of my top 3 favorite DJs/producers, along with Oliver Heldens and... idk, there may be more than 3. About the song itself, wow, MK’s pianos never disappoint.
you can find the playlist here

Patterns - Give it Up
Ok well, don't get me wrong, I love doing curated by hatto, but it is nonetheless exhausting. That's why I love curating about bands that I know a lot about, or that have little history, little changes, etc. It's easy for me and it takes way little time than bands like Ghandi, bôa or bloc party. I loved doing those, but it took several hours to research everything and condense it just for a single post (way more than making the videos themselves). Perks of doing this, I guess. I'm not complaining, just letting it out of my system. Anyway...
✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈
This week's song (which I uploaded late, but compensated with a cool video) is called 'Give It Up', from Patterns. I opted for an 4:3, VCR font, kinda vintage looking video, which you can see on hatto's dumpster youtube channel
About the band
Patterns is a Costarican synthpop band from San José, founded on 2012, as a form of fulfilling the nostalgia for the 80s and the desire of experimentation from its members.
The group was originally formed by:
Mario Miranda: drums and synths Allan Rojas: guitar and synths Michelle Gonzales: vocals Luigi Jiménez: bass Later on there would be changes on it's lineup when Estefani Brolo (GT) replaced Michelle on vocals when the latter decided to go solo as 'MishCatt' in 2014. Brolo's addition to the band was seemingly a bit rough as some individuals critiqued the band for not having a Costarican vocalist, but a Guatemalan one; however, people had two options really: love it or hate it. The concerns and negative comments faded away and Patterns still preserved its status and kept rocking.
They've played in several Costarican and international festivals, and even had the chance to perform for Sofar sounds in 2013. So far, the band has released 2 LPs, 2 EPs and a bunch of singles here and there.
They were one of the 5 runner ups for the 'artist of the year 2014' award by the now disappeared 89decibeles, along Las Robertas, Los Waldners, 424 and Florian Droids. That same year they were also featured and heavily promoted by Bavaria beer, both licensing their music for adverts and working with them on concerts.
Their latest release is called 'Veneno', the second full length album of the band. It includes music in Spanish, something we hadn't seen from patterns up until now. Now, the song of this week.
About the song
'Give It Up' is the 3rd track on Patterns' 2015 EP 'Shout'. This was not the song that I discovered the band for (it was with Burning Man instead) but I could say it was the track I listened to the most for a good while, before discovering more of their music.
I really like this track because of the perfect blend it makes between synthpop and Latinamerican rhythms. The lyrics are also cool, on that same note
Any meaning?
The song has a very clear message: things haven't worked out for the protagonist nor for their love interest, but it's time to start over, and make things right once and for all. That's basically it, give it up.
Go follow Patterns on instagram, facebook and twitter.
You can of course listen to them on bandcamp, spotify and youtube.

Gandhi - El Invisible
Hello! I finally got all the Mario Duarte posts complete with their Spanish audio, and of course, it'll be the same for this one.
We're on the second week of the Central American independence month, which includes Costa Rica, yada, yada, yada, I covered that already. This week's song is one the most important Latin, Costarican Rock classics, and it's called 'El Invisible' ('The Invisible Man' would be the most accurate translation)
But before we get into the song, let's check the band (I love this song but I know the research I'm about to start will be EXTENSE)
About the band
'Gandhi' is a Costarican band formed in 1993 in CR's capital city, San José. Gandhi is:
Luis Montalbert-Smith Echeverría: voice, guitar and keyboards, Abel Guier Oreamuno: Bass, Massimo Hernández Osti: drums, and Federico Miranda Garnier: guitar.
Though musicians Bruno Porter, Mauricio Pauly, Luis Arenas, Bernardo Trejos and Mario Carvajal also formed part of the band in its beginnings, the lineup above has been the only official one, and has remained unchanged for 25 years and 10 different albums.
So, the band started back in 1993 when Federico and Luis met at highschool and formed a band. They won 2nd place and from there, Gandhi started to get cultivated, at that point in time, without knowledge of the boys, something bigger was born.
Following years later, after several live shows, the band released their first album in 1997, titled 'En el Jardín del Corazón' (in the heart's garden), and today's song was part of it. Then in 1999 they released their second album with a remasterized version of 'El Invisible' which was also very requested on local radios even before the relaunch. All of this catapulted them to be at the top of Costarican rock and in general music scene, where they stay as memorable as bands like Malpaís, José Capmany and Café con Leche, Marfil or Evolución, among others.
I remember, personally, that I discovered Gandhi because of their 2009 album 'Arigato No!', which also took them to La Antigua Aduana in where they performed and recorded a DVD for the album, which has been called the best concert from a national band in the history of Costarican rock. The success of this album had them play alongside Aerosmith's 2009 concert in La Guácima.
in 2014 they presented with Costa Rica's National Symphonic Orchestra, and went to China to play in two of Beijing's most important festivals. There's also a documentary that you can watch here (and I personally will, maybe a reaction video could come out of it? idk)
Then the 7th album, 'Universo Asimetrico' came, and the band earned an ACAM award. In 2018, Gandhi celebrated their 25th anniversary. In 2020, they released their X album: 'Boicot: Victoria' [Boycott: Victory], and I'm pretty sure we'll have Gandhi for another while.
That is basically what they have done, you know, I try to condense as much history as I can but in some cases it becomes impossible to make it short (and I have to admit I wanted to be as extense as possible with the CR bands)
About the song
'El Invisible' (as said before, the most accurate translation would be 'the invisible man') is a Latin rock song, with very distinctive sounds like the güiro that starts playing at around 0:05 and that goes practically all through the song.
You can also hear a rhythmic pattern on the melodic guitar and bass that you may recognize from the bassline on songs like 'Smooth (ft. Rob Thomas)' or 'Oye Como Va' both by Santana.
At around 1:04 (and later on on the second bridge) the congas are also pretty evident, giving it one more Latin music element.
Of course, at 1:17 (and the other choruses of the song) you'll indubitably find that very specific type of riff, which, fair enough, sounds pretty Santana, but that's because Santana plays a lot of Latin rock.
Finally, at 3:07 the 2 final elements on a Latin rock track appear: the clean piano (that has a rhythm close to that in bolero music) and the guitar solo, tying everything together on a track that is as iconic as all of its elements.
Any meaning?
Thanks to my girlfriend who actually listens to a lot more music in Spanish than me, and is a philologist, writer and poet, and thus has a way better understanding of Spanish lyrics than I'll ever have.
So, she said basically this:
'El Invisible' refers to a lover that is not by her side anymore, and that she cannot forget, and so, his memories will always be present.
However it could also refer to that 'blue prince' (with a bit of spice) who knows exactly what she likes, and when to do it; without implying it was a past lover.
Or, as well, it's the guy saying that he's that perfect lover, even without knowing if she thinks the same.
The type of metaphors used can have more than one interpretation, which seems to actually be Gandhi's idea, because they want multiple experiences from multiple people to be relatable to the song.
Follow Gandhi on social media like instagram and facebook.
You can stream their music on spotify, youtube, and bandcamp.
