EVERYTHING IS AWESOME WITH LEGO BATMAN! Non-Spoiler Review
Remember when the world made sense? 2012 seemed so long ago now, but back then the President wasn't an insane billionaire reality TV star,  the best TV shows were still on the TV, not your Laptop, and Batman looked like this:

Well in 2016 we crapped the bed, got high and decided to make the worlds best superheroes fight it out to the (near) death, twice. Three times if you include Daredevil vs Punisher.
Well the fucking fever dream isn’t over as I can now confirm that Lego Batman is going to be the BEST BATMAN OF 2017.

I know it’s only February, but even if Justice League is good Batfleck can’t brood his way into my heart the way the LEGO BATMAN did. After multiple, sulky, dark Batmans (Batmen?), this movie is a refreshing, sugary sip of colour and fun that pokes fun at the ridiculousness of the character’s previous big screen and small screen adaptations. It’s pretty much the opposite of the Nolan-verse Batman, not even trying to make Batman a character you’d believe could really exists, instead he’s an over-the-top narcissist with a childish streak.
The world is just as cartoony, bright, colourful, and quite literally made of Lego bricks filled with not-too-bright gothamites plagued by constant attacks from Batman’s mortal enemies, and other enemies Batman, and many DC fans would rather forget. The Joker, of course, takes the role of lead antagonist; voiced by Zach Galifianakis, he is honestly the best incarnation of the clown prince on the big screen since Heath Ledger’s. Gleefully evil and intensely obsessed with Batman, the portrayal is actually pretty true to the character.
Indeed, much of the film works so well because the creators clearly had a deep understanding of Batman lore, peppering almost every scene with references to the movies and 60′s TV show. This is part of the reason the humor, which savagely pokes fun of the characters and tropes at times, never feels mean-spirited or disrespectful.
Also needing a big heap of praise is the animation, particularly the action sequences, my big question before I saw the film if how on earth can the make lego figures fighting look exciting, and boy do they manage it. Fight scenes are fast paced and fun, with Batman wrecking shop like a tiny, plastic badass.
LEGO BATMAN is a true spoof film, much like the spoofs of old like Naked Gun and Airplane, the film is ridiculous and silly in all the right ways, with some painfully funny jokes. The problem, and it’s quite a small one, is at times the jokes are over done, coming too much too fast to properly appreciate them, like having delicious chocolate cake stuffed into your mouth until your jaw hurts. Thankfully the films gives you time to catch your breathe before the next onslaught. I’d just rather it give it’s viewers more manageable bites.
The biggest problem with the film can also be seen as it’s great strength, LEGO BATMAN goes all out, balls to the wall. It sprays the shark with a hefty dose of shark repellent as it jumps over it, and although it definitely worked for me, and most other cinema goers, there will be some who will find the film TOO over the top, and will tired of the shtick pretty quickly.
But for most, LEGO BATMAN will be an awesome, hilarious, ridiculous hour and a half that is well worth the ticket price to go see.
