remmick and the vampires present a false dichotomy
Hogwood (the man who sold the twins the mill) and the KKK are very obviously bad, they are outright malicious bigotry, they use the n-word and plan to lynch the moore's and their community, they are so blatantly racist and hateful it's unavoidably obvious
remmick and the vampires however say that they believe in equality, say that they want to create a community, and yet remmick's goal throught the movie is to both metaphorically and literally steal sammie's ability for his own goal of reconnecting with his irish ancestors, a white man wants to harm a young and upcoming black man and use talents for his own goals without giving any regard to said black man's autonomy or agency
when sammie sings 'I lied to you' in the juke joint and calls forth the spirits from the past and future, it's a blend of cultures; west african, east asian, native american, and african american song and dance blend together across time and space to tell the stories of blues; where it takes its inspiration from, the music genres it then inspired, the complex history of black american culture and its intersections with other peoples of colour in the USA
when remmick and the vampires kill and turn the people in the juke joint, and then perform rocky road to dublin, only remmick's irish culture is on display, there is no influence from the black and asian people he has forcibly assimilated into his song, it's juxtaposition with the earlier scene is blatant, remmick is more than happy to assimilate people of colour into his 'community' of 'equals', and yet its only whiteness that is celebrated, that is normative
remmick claims that he's doing people a favour by turning them immortal, conviently ignoring that he literally has to suck the life out of them to do so, trapping their spirits on earth, he claims that he's the good guy, that the KKK were gonna come and lynch everyone at the joint in the morning anyways, conviently ignoring that he's doing the exact same thing; a white man leading a mob to kill a bunch of black people
in the final confrontation with sammie remmick repeatedly dunks him into the river, a forceful baptism. both the celtic irish and enslaved west africans had their religions suppressed and destroyed by colonialsm, had christianity forced upon them by the british empire, and in that scene we see remmick repeating that cycle, using christianity to inflict harm, and sammie reclaiming christianity, despite all the complex emotions he has arround it, as many colonised peoples have and still do, when he recites the lord's prayer
remmick and the vampires are no less racist than hogwood and the KKK, are no less predatory or evil, they're just less blantant about their bigotry, they represent the system, the normalised white supremacy that is seeped into the very foundation of culture in america, the point isnt that remmick would call any of the black characters in the movie the n-word, i dont think he would, the point is that his exploitation and desacration and inserting-himself-into-when-he-wasn't-invited of the juke joint is a microcosm of what white people have done to black american arts and culture since ever since there have been black and white people in america, and even before that
theres a reason vultures are shown early on in this movie

Saturday I am going to my local Rennaisance Festival. We're going to celebrate my Birthday. It's also the fantasy weekend.
I turned a bunch of fabrics I have been stockpiling and a vintage blouse into a fairy prince outfit.

Literally had the waistcoat fabric for years, found it at a thrift store for 3 dollars.
The velvet and the scale fabric I picked up at Joanne's during their closing sale.
Literally only bought some trim, a scarf, fabric paint, and an eyelet tool. Mist of the buttons are vintage from a local antique button collector.
#costume design#cosplay#ren fest#ren faire#I hand sewed every last stitch#i do not have a functional sewing machine#but i make it work#been waiting 6 years to use this fabric

A sketch I recently did. Was feeling exhausted after a week in the factory I work in and was also thinking about domestic silk moths. IYKYK. Anyways, fuck capitalism and exploitation. And fuck the cruelty of domestic silk moths.

Not sure if you're joking or not, but that's kind of how vampire media works? It's kind of how monster media works in general.
Vampires are often used as analogues for specific human experiences, like nobility draining the lower classes for their benefit or vampirism being used to express queerness/disability and the dehumanizing nature of marginalization.
Vampire media can be incredibly nuanced or it can just be monsterfucking. Either way the vampire has always been all of the things you mentioned at once.
The vampire is a terrifying creature beyond death and powerful and seductive at the same time. It's what makes them intriguing, they can represent humanity's corrupted side while still making it a temptation for humans to join them.
I'd argue there are 5 solid camps. And each one comes with their own unique takes and nuances. A post I literally made a week or two ago on the subject.
Hope this helps.
why is there like, at least three camps in regard to vampire-based fiction? it is either
a: '"Kill them all, for they are evil, inhuman to their very core; do not fratronize with these freaks of nature, for you too will be turned into an example if you do so"
b: "vampires are poor, unfortunate souls who are also representations for x, y, and/or z."
or c: "they are soooo hot, OMG please turn me daddy/mommy UwU"
#vampires#Vampires are an extremely nuanced literary device#Vampires can be terrifying seductive at the same time#I love all the ways vampires are used in media equally

Vampire media falls into the following distinct categories for me:
Vampire as a villain-either literally or figuratively, the vampire is the badguy. Often used as a metaphor for things like exploitation of the poor or colonization. Think Dracula, The Lost Boys, or Sinners.
Vampire as a protagonist (monster accepted)-The vampires are protagonists who accept their nature as terrifying monsters while still doing good or morally upstanding things. Or generally implying that being a vampire does not make a person monstrous but rather what they do with it. Think Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate or American Vampire.
Vampire as protagonist (monster denied/suppressed)- A protagonist with some level of vampiric nature but denies themself or implies their power is only to be used for eradicating the evil vampires. Implications of vampirism are the destruction or loss of humanity/soul. Blade is a good example of this. And most media featuring dhampirs falls into this category.
Vampirism as a metaphor for chronic illness/disabilty/queerness/general marginalization, characters are often protagonists but with specific nuance to their struggles. D.N. Bryn's Guides for Dating Vampires book series falls into this category.
Defanged vampires- A category I tend to steer clear of. This is when the term vampire is co-opted for some inhuman designation that doesn't quite feel like a vampire or just demonsterfies vampires into gothic superhumans. Twilight and a lot of weird vamp romances I have stumbled across fall into this category. I dislike this trope because it often takes away the struggles that make protagonist vampires intriguing.
Absolutely problematic garbage- Vampire Knight. I will never get back the time I wasted on that series.
Everyone seems to forget vampire media is incredibly nuanced and varies depending on what the creator wants to say or imply with their vampires. Honestly I get tired of people jumping to conclusions that I either read Twilight or Vampire Chronicles/Vampire Diaries and that there must be nothing else. When in reality I have a varied collection of vampire media under my belt.

Hey all, my IRL friend lost her house to an electrical fire last week. She lost a few beloved furry friends and could use some help as she, her husband, their girlfriend, and their infant have lost almost everything they own. No humans were hurt.
Please like/reblog if nothing else. Just trying to cast a wider net here.

Watching 2 of my favorite websites getting anthropamorphized and shipped is so fucking funny. It feels like I'm online in the 2010s seeing human anime designs of restaurants.

Sometimes you find a new story and getting into it is like "Oh! This is home! I can live here :)" and it becomes part of your comfort zone forever. Sometimes it's more like "This is a nice place to visit, but it's not quite my home. It's somebody else's," like when you're at a friend's or acquaintance's for a party. Sometimes it's more like a church, or a museum, or a library — "This is a beautiful space, and I can tell I'm welcome here, but I'm not quite equipped to treat it as home."
And sometimes finding a new story is like "This would be a terrible place to live, but that's a really nice chair..." Then you steal the furniture and take it home with you.
(*Note: this is about stories and not fandoms. Fandoms are more like cities or settlements, and finding homeliness in one of them is an entirely different proposition.)

My copies have an entirely different translation thatdoesn't contradict the story! This may be a case of translation variation.

Just came across this bit, as Ed encounters Ishvalans in the ruins of Xerxes, and I think it contradicts later stuff?

(Learning about Scar killing the Rockbells, chapter 41)
They say
His right arm bore the markings of [Ishvalan] warrior priests, and
He killed the Rockbells in the early days of the war.
I need to double check this stuff, but I'm pretty sure the tattoo was anathema due to being alchemy related. Scar's brother wasn't a warrior priest, so even if these guys saw it before and misunderstood, it wouldn't have been on a priest. And Scar's brother was killed by Kimblee, therefore after Order 3066 mobilised the alchemists, in the last year of an ~8 year war.
I mean, unless Kimblee went to war early on and Volume 15 tells the Ishval Civil War out of order.
