Writing Prompt #2387

She was desperate to belong to something, at this rate, anything. It didn't matter what, so long as someone wanted her around and she had a purpose.

Sometimes … it’s just hard to tell people what you're going through.

But God? He already knows my pain. And He’s always here to cry with me.

And ... that's a good thing... Because it means that I'm not alone in my suffering. That in a world of 8 billion people and in a universe of countless spectacular stars that there is at least One Person who understands me.

Me. A selfish and good-for-nothing sinner.

It's a miracle that it is God Himself who understands me. Who would think that the Perfect Heavenly Being would deign to consider someone as insignificant as me?

But it is because He understands me, that I have hope He won't leave me alone.

Why?

It's because ... He knows my weak nature, experienced it firsthand. He knows how much I need Him, how that if He leaves me, I have possibly no chance of surviving.

And so, He stays. He stays despite of my brokenness, despite of the sins I commit.

And that is one of the greatest mercies He could ever give me.

Unknown- We can look to fellow Christians for wisdom and encouragement, but other people are never meant to be put on a pedestal that is only meant for Jesus.

“Come as you are” does not mean that God is okay with whatever sins are currently in our lives and we don’t have to worry about repenting of them.

“Come as you are” just means not to let your current sins prevent you from coming before God because of shame. It means coming to God as you are (in repentance) and expecting to be radically changed by Him through the power of the Holy Spirit and molded into the image of His Son.

You know what? Beyond my personal moral convictions, I think it’s really important for young adults to read and watch sexless stories. And not necessarily like “fade to black nothing to see here” ones where we know stuff is going down even though we don’t see it. I mean stories where characters are in love or falling in love but sex isn’t mentioned.

Like Howl’s Moving Castle, for one. Howl and Sophie fall in love and are willing to sacrifice and be their best selves for the other, but there’s really never a scene where Sophie takes in Howl in that physical “I’m attracted to him rn” kind of way. Vice versa with Howl, although we never get his POV.

Or the Dick Van Dyke show where Rob and Laura are clearly BFFs and attracted to each other (cuz duh they’re husband and wife, their relationship is prolly the most “fiery” of 60s family sitcoms — at least the ones I watched) but sex isn’t mentioned. In this story, it’s ancillary to their love and commitment to each other. They’re busy living a hysterical, messy life. We don’t need to know about the nighttime stuff.

Or say Ron and Hermione. They’re young and in love, but what is focused on is how they fight so well together and how they support each other and make each other better. They’re both willing to die for the other.

Look, sex is great, I’m sure. I’m a Christian, so I’m a sex in marriage only kind of person, but like I said, beyond that, I think kids — especially teens — need these kinds of sexless stories. Because they’re growing up, they’re figuring out what it means to fall in love with someone, they’re dealing with puberty and confiding feelings and the whole shebang. So stories that show love outside of the physical, detached from the physical, are really helpful, I think, in helping a teen or young adult (perhaps especially one who feels like they can’t ask their parents about this stuff for whatever reason) conceptualize real romantic and sacrificial love, define what a healthy relationship looks like, and figure out what they’re looking for in a spouse. They WILL figure out sex without there being endless books about it. Figuring out love is what is harder.

I don’t think all these YA books that focus on the make out sessions, the butterflies, the electricity, etc (even if they focus on the deep stuff too) are as helpful at helping youths navigate this time in their life as the kind of stories I mentioned are. I just don’t. And I think YA is saturated with the less helpful type of stories, and I would personally love to see that change.

For sure, physical attraction and such is part of a living human’s experience, but it doesn’t need to be the focus of a love story. And I think before someone is settled in their understanding of love and good relationships, it’s unnecessarily distracting and confusing.

Idk, you might think I’m a prude, and that’s fine. But this is something I’ve been thinking about, and I really do believe that the stories we read at that impressionable stage in life stick with us forever and help form some of our thought patterns. So I think those stories should teach us that sex should be a side effect of deep love, not the precursor to it.

Sure, he was classified as a "monster" but there just didn't seem fair. Plenty of humans were far crueler, but just wore "normal" skin.

Happy Stitch Day! 

Stitch was not good. He didn’t start out good, and he didn’t have goodness deep inside of him. He had to have someone (Lilo) love him unconditionally and adopt him into a family to be made a new, good creation. He didn’t have to believe in himself or be true to himself to save the day. He needed someone to save HIM first. 

We’re like that. We don’t start out good. We start out bad, with an instinct to destroy what’s around us. And on our own, we’ll lose that fight every time. But with Christ’s unconditional love, we can be made new and good. And we get adopted into His “Ohana!” Happy Stitch Day!
