A bit of a backstory..
There could have been multiple ways you arrived here. Whether is was my earlier post, my Instagram, or my Snapchat - welcome. I just wanted to give you a bit of an understanding as to why I started this blog, so lets begin. * The upcoming information could be graphic, so if you are uncomfortable with the human anatomy and it’s functions, do not continue *
At the age of 14, I started getting irregular periods. They would only happen once every 3-4 months, and they were always incredibly painful. They always came with severe abdominal cramping which had me bedridden many times, and were followed by migraines with auras. At 15, I asked my family physician to put me on birth control to help regulate it. After 9 months of taking the pill, we saw no improvement, but I continued it nonetheless. I also decided to become an ovo-lacto vegetarian to see if this would improve any aspect of my health.        At age 16, I was brought to the hospital and kept for nearly two weeks. What the doctors thought was an issue with my gallbladder, turned out to be a bad case of Pancreatitis. At the time of this happening, I was fairly healthy. I didn’t drink alcohol, I never touched any medication or drug related items, and I wasn’t a major coffee drinker either. After multiple tests, the doctors were unable to figure out what caused the Pancreatitis, but asked me to take it easy and come back if anything happened. After the first incident, I had what the doctors called “ mini episodes “ that only lasted a period of about 24 hours. To make this easy to understand; my pancreas would become inflamed, it would swell up to almost twice the size, and would cause a mass amount of shooting pains throughout my abdomen for about 18-24 hours.
At age 18, I noticed a significant weight increase. At this point, my diet was fairly healthy. It consisted of salads, tofu, eggs, certain dairy products, the occasional bit of rice, but for the most part vegetables, and beans/lentils. I was also exercising 3 days a week at a local gym. Of course there was the occasional cheating, but it was not enough to make me gain this amount of weight in a period of 4 years. I brought it up to my doctor, and they thought it could be due to the birth control I was on, so I stopped taking the birth control.       Fast forward to age 20, where nothing has changed except I was no longer a vegetarian. If anything, things may have got worse. I was still having irregular periods, but the time gaps had increased to once every 5-6 months. When I did finally get my period, it was so painful I was provided T3 for the pain. My migraines worsened, and the auras that followed would stop me in my tracks when they appeared. I had gained more weight and was now up another 20 lbs in 2.5 years. Now here is where the real annoyance kicked in. I started getting coarse black hairs on my chin. It would happen regularly. I became consumed by plucking and waxing. I started getting dermatitis on my scalp. My feet were swelling which hurt when I walked at all.. It was one thing after another.
I am now 23 years old, and I finally have an official diagnosis. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome otherwise known as PCOS. As someone who has dealt with this for almost 10 years, I can finally say I am receiving assistance. For those of you who don’t know what PCOS is, it is a hormone imbalance caused by the growth of cysts on your ovaries. It causes problems with your periods and can make it difficult or impossible for some to get pregnant. PCOS also causes unwanted changes in your body such as excessive hair growth, weight gain or weight loss, mood swings, swelling and pressure, head aches or migraines, hair thinning on the scalp, and is usually followed with anxiety disorders and depression.
As of today, I am starting my first pack of progesterone birth control, and I am starting my second round of Ketosis on August 4, 2017. I will also be looking into IUD options, and tracking my everyday progression. For those of you who suffer from PCOS, I want to hear from you.
What are some things you’ve dealt with through while learning you have PCOS? What have you done to improve your overall health and PCOS Symptoms? What are your biggest recommendations for someone who is new to dealing with life with PCOS?
Thanks so much to everyone who has taken the time to read this post. It took a long time for me to come to terms with my issues, but with the support I have found through my friends, and online via Reddit and Tumblr.. you all have been so amazing.
