I seriously have a problem, my love of Shigaraki is stupid and now here I am, obsessively writing a college AU fic and sorta making him a fuckboy. Listen though, I think if AFO had raised him with confidence, that man would a menace to women. Dabi gets talked about all the time about being a fuckboy and being suave and that jazz but I really think that Shiggy could give him a run for his money had he been raised with self-confidence. So that’s what I’m working on portraying because I mad simp for that man 🖤

Japanese vs. English Shigaraki - A Look At The 281 Speech

The speech from 281 is really interesting, especially considering that despite Shigaraki talking about heroes in general - specifically in regards to his own situation - it parallels Endeavor and the Todoroki family situation, so I’m going to talk about his speech, compare the official English translation with the Japanese version and also explain how it relates to the Todoroki family.

First things first, this speech can be treated as one long sentence. I’m breaking them all up by speech bubble/panel, but just keep in mind that these parts all string together and are building up on another (I am including the full speech at the very end of this!).

Right off the bat, Shigaraki’s speech starts with a sentence that, although about himself, is a perfect parallel to the Todoroki family.

"Coulda just gone home and been a normal kid. Now I'm careening down a highway with a lizard ninja, a guy who’s so desperate to be held that he wears hands, and this mofo who has the audacity to be ordering a pizza right now.”

"We were promised pizza."

They just look done. They're either tired or constipated or both.

Since Sanzu showed and used his katana I've seen several people pointing out his grip and fencing technique, because according to the Character Book, that's his special ability. Especially people doubting if he is really good at it or not.

On several occasions we've seen Sanzu using his katana single-handedly, and even using it to stab Takemichi. Also relaxing the grip of his non-dominant hand when finishing a cut.

I think these two examples are the best that can be used to point out this "mistake". When Sanzu killed Mutō, he completely relaxed his left hand, actually creating a visible gap between his palm and the hilt of the weapon. In the next one, use the katana to stab instead of slash.

This is more of an opinion as to why Sanzu has used his weapon like this when it has been specifically stated that this is his ability. Also, I wanted to search just for fun and share it! :')

Now we need to know some basic things about this class of weapon

The blade of katanas is designed to slash, not stab, especially from a position above the enemy. Historically it has been done this way to make it easier for the samurai to slash their enemies on horseback.

The katana, in principle, is made to be held by two hands. Dominant hand on top. Sanzu is right-handed, so his right hand is always on top.

If you are on land, and not on horseback, one leg should be put forward to. The latter increases the range of the edge and decreases the samurai's hesitation.

The katana must be raised above the samurai's head and then lowered at a 45° angle to the ground to slash the enemy in two.

Remember this? Yeah, Sanzu was about to decapitate Takemichi

Going back to before. Yes, we've seen Sanzu perform all these steps perfectly

As I've said, the katana is designed to be held with both hands. Hence, its cut is so strong and effective. However, can it be used with one hand?

Here we don't enter something professional, but rather physical, due to the context of the story.

By context I mean that there is no rules in street fighting, unlike in martial arts classes. maybe ethical lmao. That is why some martial arts fail when it comes to being executed in a street fight, where there are no rules and no one is going to give up just by being held fifteen seconds on the ground. There are stress factors that influence all your movements, but I'll talk about that later based on my own experience

Using heavy weapons with one hand can lead to wrist fractures and injuries in general. However, the katana is a light enough weapon that it won't hurt you if your grip is strong enough.

We've seen that sanzu's one-handed grip is so strong that even being run over by a motorcycle doesn't let go of the katana ☠️

However, making many movements in a row while holding it with one hand is dangerous. I don't remember if we've seen him using it this particular way.

On the other hand, and to me this is the main reason why Sanzu seems to forget how to use it, is that he gets nervous or/and excited. On most occasions in which he has been seen making "mistakes" he has been seen nervous, restless or directly desperate. The train scene

The desperation and excitement in street fights can be seen in erratic or excessively rigid movements. Missing, tripping, throwing wide crochets instead of closed ones. We've seen it many times throughout the manga. My favorite moment, personally, is this:

Takemichi's torso is completely thrown forward. And you can't even see what kind of punch he was going to deliver. A direct? A crochet? It's disastrous. His emotions led him to lose his reason

I laughed so hard when I saw it, because it reminded me of me in class. I had literally that same scene, repeated over and over and the reason was the same: emotions. I mean it when I say that looking at your opponent after he puts his leg up like that is very embarrassing. And it hurts

About the scene of him stabbing Takemichi: if I'm not mistaken, the roof of the train wasn't high enough for him to lift the katana, the space wasn't enough, and I'm completely sure he was too nervous to think.

Sometimes I think we don't take into account that Sanzu is a young boy who has been let down that he loses his mind sometimes, do you remember when he tackled the Yotsuya Gang alone? Just because they called Toman "lame", and he had just joined the gang. Even Mutō was surprised

What about the moments when he isn't emotionally overwhelmed?

Street fighting is completely free of rules except perhaps for ethical reasons. Sanzu can use the katana however he wants, just following some steps, as long as he doesn't get hurt, that's what makes him good. That's body and weapon control. He has enough physical strength to use the katana with one hand, his movements are very graceful.

I'll say it again. This is not from a professional point of view in a professional context, but considering the context of a street fight between gangs

Remember he's not in a dojo, nor in a battle. He's not a samurai with a code to follow. Street fights implie no general rules except ethical, but it depends on who, where and why + cultural reasons

Weapons in street fights = use them however you want but don't hurt yourself.

The aim is trying to survive. If it works to win, then it's fine. Most important above all: this man has no morals at all

From my personal experience, yeah, it's true that when you start using a weapon you are involved in doing it well, but you end up losing control with each step that the fight advances. It's very difficult to stay calm and execute everything perfectly, whether it is even simple things like punches.

Or at least for me it is and for the people I have fought in martial arts as well. Regardless of age and gender, although I have fought mostly men when it comes to weapons, we all end up hitting erratically and losing our minds for moments. And that doesn't mean we're bad at our skills. At the contrary, that's what makes us humans

Now, on the other hand. Is Wakui wanting to tell us something about Sanzu by this "mistakes"? Something about his personality?

I personally find it quite strange that he almost let go of one of his hands when killing Mutō. If there really is an underlying reason for his character development represented in the way he uses his katana, would that mean he hesitated?
