Grace did no wrong, imo. They were doomed anywaysl if they stayed inside the juke joint, as they would have had to fight the klan in the morning. Mary points out that the twins left the trunk full of weapons outside (which Smoke uses in the end) in their truck and the twins have an argument over it. Smo yeah, they would have all gotten killed.

Plus, the vamps would have dispersed at sunrise, regrouped the next night and taken out the whole town. And because everyone at the juke joint would have been dead from the klan, the town would have no warning.

Also, they threatened Grace's kid. Of course she's going to crash out. If she didn't, that'd make no sense. At least her child was saved the vamps ultimately defeated.

I've been thinking about Grace's decision ever since I finished watching the movie.

I had conflicting thoughts, and I couldn't make up my mind about her motive and what the movie was trying to say about it.

I had some interesting discussions here and elsewhere, found out what Ryan Coogler said about Grace, and I finally came to a conclusion.

I think Grace's mistake (throwing everybody under the bus to save her chikd) was meant to show us how white supremacy pits POC against each other by exploiting their very human fears and their natural tribalistic survival mechanism.

Remember, white supremacy doesn't have to turn people racist or encourage people to act on their racism. Sometimes, it just needs to make you believe you can't protect your loved ones until you screw over other marginalised groups. You don't have to be a bigot to believe this. You just have to be overwhelmed with fear and desperation.

This is why many American POCs (including black people) voted to continue the genocide in Gaza, believing it was the nessasry "lesser evil" that would protect them from Trump's fascism.

I don't think every POC who voted to keep the genocide going had a racial prejudice against Palestinians. I think many of them were just terrified out of their minds for their families - just like Grace - and made the mistake of buying into the lies of white supremacy: "you're in danger and you can't be safe until you treat other marginalized groups as disposable".

I don’t have anything intelligent to say. Only unintelligent things. But they’re under the cut due to their spoilerful nature. Not really analysis? But something ?

In Sammy’s last interaction with Remmick, while Sammy—the preacher boy, the son of a pastor, himself raised religious, attending church regularly, through a combination of his own faith and his family connection—is speaking to Remmick, he’s effectively baptized in the water by the devil, deciding in the end he won’t give up music despite it all.

And the one baptizing him was not only the devil but separately Remmick, an Irish immigrant who witnessed and experienced the Irish conversion into Catholic dogma by an uncaring and oppressive national power that swept its own culture over that of the Irish, erasing their customs and music and stories and beliefs. The transformation in that time was similarly violent and through all these years he has separated himself from that sense of spirituality, but still finds comfort in the same recitation Sammy draws on to keep him at bay, and so something in the both of them dies at that sunrise feeling safe through the invocation of their own beliefs. But Remmick is not an innocent victim, he has become the same monster that created him.

Even having seen all that Remmick and the vampires don’t sympathize with Sammy. They perpetuate the same rollover, the same blanket staking claim over what should never be theirs and isn’t within their rights to take away. Remmick wants to come inside your house, and he wants to drain what makes you living. Despite the fact that all his own experiences should reasonably be giving him empathy toward the patrons of Club Juke for experiencing a similar and arguably more sudden and violent suppression and silencing of their culture and beliefs, having himself gone through that process he continues the cycle.

Remmick and the Klan vampires want Sammy’s music and his stories as a perpetuation of cultural consumption that is not new, but is especially prevalent now in the United States just as it was “during” the Jim Crow era. The vampires as a whole don’t just collect the culture, they file it away. It’s not acceptable to practice it once they get their claws on it (or, really, before)—not the way it is as your culture. The vampires want to come into Club Juke, but they don’t want to play the Blues. The vampires want to sing and dance, but they’ll do it their way. The vampires have an “in” through aaaany small connection they can draw to your culture. The vampires are 1/16 Your Family, so you should let them in. You should give them your stories and your music, because they’re part of your group.

The vampires worm their way in like parasites, and they destroy what they’re after in the process. The vampires take your struggles and they make it about them. Your practicing things that are meaningful to you and unique to your culture is actually rude to the vampires. You must hate the vampires. You must be a bad person for not including the vampires. You don’t want to dance with the vampires? You don’t care for fellowship and love? You want to live in a world of hate? Then you will.

BUT!!!!!!!!! Going back to that veeeery first part. Sammy is baptized in the wake of all this carnage by the devil himself, and returning back to church he can’t put down the guitar. He holds on to his music and his stories even after every devastating thing the vampires have done to try to wrench it away from him. He holds on tighter. Something in him died during that sunrise, but he found comfort in his stories, the very thing that, more broadly, his embracing made Remmick so intent on collecting him.

Sammy gains understanding through these stories, and rather than carrying that on as fuel for further destruction like Remmick, Sammy turns that understanding into a new story, and new music, and new comfort in his life.

It’s not a good story to share, this experience of suppression and erasure and theft of culture, but it is common ground. Instead of playing with aspects of your own culture to fit yourself into another that draws you in, you find common ground, whether that be through shared experiences or stories you make together. You don’t find comfort in the suffering but you can find comfort in the fact that others have endured it too, and do it alongside you now. You find empathy and you keep going. You make your own stories and music and you share what you want to with the world, like we see from Sammy in the end.

This movie is not about Remmick, and the problem is not about making “the vampires” feel comfortable or included or special. Remmick is not a victim now even if he may have been hundreds of years ago. You need to walk the line between solely relying on your own stories and stealing those of others. You have to learn to do that, and you can.

the comparison of the Irish experience to the Black experience, finding out that Remmick comes from a time when the Irish were colonized... while still acknowledging that he was able to use that privilege to escape the vampire hunters... and the first thing he did was un-racist those fuckers in the home he ran in to.

and the absolute juxtaposition of Sammie escaping the vampire hivemind with his life, only to go back home to the church where he is expected to give up the music of his life to assimilate into his father's church

Been revisiting the story modes of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 reboot to deal with my existential dread of a potential World War 3 breaking out any day now and I have QUESTIONS.
