HM The King George VI's final public appearance

On this day, 72 years ago the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh departed for a commonwealth tour from London Airport, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret waved goodbye to the royal couple.

This was the last time Princess Elizabeth saw her father before his death and return to England as Queen.

King George V and The Prince of Wales, 13 March 1914

On this day in 1936, King George V died at Sandringham House aged 70.

His eldest son, Edward, then ascended the throne to become Edward VIII and reigned for 326 days, making him the shortest reigning British Monarch to date. He abdicated on 10 December of the same year and was succeeded by his younger brother Prince Albert, Duke of York, who took the reign name George VI.

Oh noo Queen Daisy will abdicate next 14 January 🥹🥹

Her Majesty the Queen said this in her New Year's speech, she said "I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 - 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father - I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik."

Thank you Your Majesty for five decades as inspiring and amazing Queen! I hope Queen Margrethe can live a peaceful and enjoyable life after her abdication ❤️🫶🏻 I also wish the best for Prince Frederik and Queen Mary who will begin their new roles as King and Queen of Denmark!🇩🇰👑
