Since we've got two out now, I just wanna say a bit about how I'm doing the Hunger Games Tarot:

Planning to alternate between Major Arcana in order and other cards. - Variety will hopefully keep me from getting stuck/bored.

Finnick skipped the line because an Anon requested the King of Wands. Plan is to now start with the rest of the Arrows (Wands) between MA cards. Feel free to tell me cards/people/events you're looking forward to seeing, and they may get fast-tracked, too!

Entirely* book-based assignments, reasonings, and art. There will be book-only characters, and movie-only events or people will not be here. *Movie details which do not contradict the books may make it into art if I like them enough. **And if art conflicts with the books, it could also be a simple mistake on my part. Sometimes I'll fix it, sometimes it is what it is.

Card meanings come from my personal interpretations and the resources I like. Tarot cards are already fairly flexible and ambiguous and can mean slightly different things to different people. Same for the characters and events depicted. That's just how it is.

The physical drawings are 11x18cm including the frame, just fyi. I digitally cut the card drawings from their background and add the solid color behind and the frame in front (cause I am not drawing that whole thing 72 times).

Finnick Odair as the King of Arrows (Wands) represents someone who is energetic, charismatic, and resilient. This is a King of passion in the suit of action, someone who is a natural leader and will persevere in order to achieve their goals.

Finnick’s public persona is one of charisma and charm, known for his impressive skill with a trident, and some of that comes naturally to him. In his personal life, he has a sense of humor and an optimistic spirit. Even at his lowest, he jokes around, and the mention of a new trident from Beetee brings him to life. When District 13’s rebels set out to rescue the kidnapped Victors from the Capitol, he is distressed yet able to focus on the task required—telling his secrets—and then tells Katniss that, no matter how the operation goes, they’ll be free after. When the Capitol has Annie, Finnick may feel more like the King Reversed, a poor leader drained of all that charisma and power. However, he remains wise, helping Katniss cope by tying a rope and seeing the situation clearly. Once he has Annie back, he does not merely sit on his laurels and relax. He remains driven and brave, choosing to take action for the revolution by joining Squad 451 in the Capitol invasion and fighting for Panem. Like the King of Wands, Finnick Odair is a bright, indomitable spirit who does not remain still for long.

The Major Arcana may be called the Fool's Journey, and the Fool is the start of it, just as it is Prim who is the start of the Hunger Games story.

First and foremost, the Fool is not simply foolish. Prim as the Fool represents innocence and embarking on new journeys in uncharted territory. Sometimes, that involves taking risks based on a strong gut instinct or sense of right, though not necessarily on wisdom. In the Fool's spirit of growth, Prim quickly learns the skills of medicine and later takes the risk to become a medic on the front lines of the war without fear. When Katniss interacts with Prim in Mockingjay, she is struck by how she has grown, how the one she has always taken care of has learned to take care of others. Prim's growth to independence is admirable, but there is a sadness in its necessity. The Fool's innocence is sacrificed to gain maturity.

In the traditional Rider Waite Smith cards, the Fool is shown taking the first step of a journey. He carries a sack and is accompanied by a dog, as Prim carries her medical bag and has Buttercup.

Me when the label has been created but I still may not get it till the 12th.

Some time ago, I ordered an ink refill for a marker I will need for a lot of stuff only to get to coloring my sweet little Fool last night and discover it was for another purple, the medium one, not the pale one I actually needed. Tragic.

jfc I just ordered the one I actually need and some white gels, and as soon as I placed the order, I remembered I need more small canvases, too. Got the HG Tarot so on the brain I forgot the other projects I gotta do.

Realized what went wrong the first time I tried to draw the Hunger Games Tarot like 7 years ago.

I looked at the plan and could only think about how much ink it would take. Markers are expensive. I was daunted by the possibility of killing and replacing my go-to colors, so I decided to do the color digitally.

However, 1) markers are meant to be used. If they die making this deck, they die with honor. 2) The coloring is one of my favorite parts of drawing! Line work is a good time, too, and I can't line digitally for shit, which is why even when I color digital I line traditional. Digital coloring, while possible and not without its merits, will never be as satisfying or enjoyable to me. Replacing such a fun part of the process with something more economical, creating a flatter look, definitely hindered my enjoyment and therefore my motivation to continue.

Moral of the story: use the good china and don't forget that art is fun!
