one piece drabble | zosan | pride kisses 2025 challenge
{"I'M SORRY" KISS}
It’s not like Zoro thought that Sanji wouldn’t be angry with him for what Zoro did when they were both trying to offer themselves up to Bartholomew Kuma. But he’d expected… Well, okay. If Zoro’s being totally honest, he’d expected that he was going to die, and whatever the cook thought about Zoro knocking him out for trying to make his own completely idiotic sacrifice wouldn’t be his problem. But on the off chance that he did survive, Zoro assumed that he’d be facing Sanji’s usual brand of blazing fury in retaliation for his actions, which was fine. It’s not like Zoro can’t handle anything that twirly-brow decides to throw at him.
But what’s been happening for the past few days isn’t the glares and scowls and bickering that Zoro is used to from the cook. It’s not snarky comments and heated insults and sharp-toothed smiles just daring him to say one more thing, push just that barest bit further. It’s not squabbling in the kitchen that turns into fighting on the deck that (sometimes) turns into a whole different type of bruising encounter later up in the crow’s nest. This is Sanji like Zoro has never seen him before; clearly seething, but avoidant and quiet, barely speaking more than ten words to Zoro since he woke up three days ago. He won’t even look Zoro in the eye.
No, it’s not anger. An angry Sanji, Zoro could deal with; angry Sanji he knows like the back of his own hand. This is different.
The cook is… upset with him.
And it’s… Kind of awful.
A lot awful, even.
So awful that Zoro kind of can’t stand it.
Zoro’s aware that the thing other people usually do when someone is upset with them is apologize, but the inherent problem with that is, of course, that Zoro isn’t sorry. He has absolutely no regrets about what he had to do in order to save the stupid cook’s life, and he thinks Sanji must realize that too, or he probably wouldn’t be upset about it in the first place. And even if Zoro could find it in himself to muster up a fake apology, there’s no way in hell Sanji would buy it; if anything, it would probably just make things worse.
But he needs to do something. Three days of dealing with a cold, withdrawn cook has left Zoro feeling like the nearly abandoned ship where they found their newest crew member, completely unmoored and strangely desolate. Sanji’s normal acerbic attitude might drive Zoro nuts, but it’s also something that he understands and can meet in kind—wants to meet in kind, even.
This though? This man wordlessly peeling potatoes at the table, who hasn’t so much as glanced at Zoro since he entered the galley, much less said a word to him, even though he’s very clearly fuming?
This just fucking sucks.
“Cook,” Zoro says. It’s the third time he’s tried to get Sanji’s attention, and Sanji continues to not respond. He just keeps peeling potatoes with roughly the same energy as a man trying to skin someone alive, glaring down at the pile of browning peels so fiercely that Zoro’s surprised they haven’t caught fire yet. Each time he finishes one it gets chucked with unusual force into the large bowl by Sanji’s side, sending water all over the floor. The fact that he doesn't seem to have noticed this is incredibly disconcerting, because Sanji hates leaving water on the floor. He says it’s a slipping hazard, and whenever Zoro does dishes he’ll make him wipe up every errant drop, no matter how small.
Almost without realizing, Zoro begins making his way over to the mess around the bowl. He thinks about grabbing some rags from the kitchen, but given Sanji’s current mood, he’s not sure whether the cook would continue to ignore him or actually try and murder him for daring to breach his sanctuary. So instead, Zoro strips off his shirt (which isn’t much better than a rag anyway, if he’s being perfectly honest) before kneeling down and beginning to mop up the spilled water.
For the first time since he entered the galley, Zoro hears a short pause in the sound of Sanji’s peeling; when it resumes, he swears that it somehow sounds angry.
Zoro finishes cleaning up the spilled water, then stands and leans over the breakfast bar so that he can drop his ruined shirt into the sink before glancing back at Sanji. He’s still peeling his potatoes with single-minded determination, but there’s a slightly different quality to the furrow of his brow, and he has his bottom lip caught between his teeth like he does when he’s thinking too much or too hard about something. And when Zoro looks at his hands, he sees that they’re shaking, ever so slightly.
There’s a weird fluttering in Zoro’s chest as he recalls that same shake from three days ago, when he woke up to find Sanji by his side, with one trembling hand hovering over him briefly before the cook went to go get Chopper. But there’s another, much fuzzier memory lurking beneath that one—of Sanji at his bedside, Sanji pressing their foreheads together and begging Zoro to wake up, Sanji leaving the faintest hint of a kiss against the corner of his mouth. It’s an image so at odds with what Zoro knows about the brash, brazen cook that he’s been chalking it up to part of a delirium induced dream, but now…
Now he wonders if it might be a real memory after all.
Zoro swallows around the sudden lump in his throat, and decides to try a different tactic. He walks over the table, coming close enough to Sanji that he could reach out and touch him, but instead raises a hand and lets it hover just over his shoulder as Zoro says something he’s pretty sure he’s never said in his life before—
“Sanji.”
The knife slips, slicing a chunk off of a potato that lands on the table with dull thud as for the first time in three days, Sanji actually looks at him, jaw slack and deep, ocean blue eyes wide with shock and bewilderment.
“What the fuck?” he mumbles under his breath, probably more to himself than Zoro. Strangely enough, Zoro doesn’t have the urge to tease him about it. Instead he lets the hand that was hovering come down to cup the back of Sanji’s neck, and when (incredibly) Sanji doesn’t immediately try and break his fingers, Zoro leans down and places a soft, barely there kiss to the corner of his gaping mouth.
“Thanks for being there when I woke up,” he says quietly, and hopes that it’s enough.
