One of our minds' greatest tricks is to convince us that if we just *think* about a problem long enough we can solve it. That might work with math.🧮 But it does not work with 🏋️lifestyle change, ♥️relationship change, 🍏dietary changes or 😊health. So many of my clients are highly intelligent, high achieving folks who are used to being able to think their way out of almost anything. They come to me because they've started to realize that no 👏matter 👏how👏 many 👏times they tell themselves that they should go to bed earlier or should eat better, it doesn't work. And that's because those problems aren't in the mind. They're in the body. They're in the habits we perform and the actions we choose every day. They're in the nutrient deficiencies we don't know we have, the food allergies or toxicities we haven't been diagnosed with yet, or the poor sleep we've been getting for years without realizing it. So just *focusing* on a problem or even the solution is not going to help. You have to put in the energy and work *in a strategic, sustainable, supported way* to make change. If you're reading this this might sound obvious, but I can't tell you how many of my clients over the last year have come into my office feeling like they've developed relationship OCD, PTSD, anxiety or some other type of disorder that involves problems with focus and rumination. They spend all day thinking about a problem. It does nothing except waste their time. When you find a doctor who helps you use your body to fix your life, the problems fall away. As a result, you don't think about them anymore. Here's the secret: It's your energy that changes the problem. It's your energy that fixes things. It's your work, not your thought. But you have to be working on the right thing. Let me find the right thing for you and teach you what work to do to truly fix the problem you've been thinking about for weeks, months or years. #ocd #focus #energy #relationshipquotes #relationshipgoals #motivation #naturalmedicine #rumination #braintype #braintypeassessment #phillyfit #phillynaturalmedicine #chesco #chescopa #extonpa #doctor #doctorswholift #weighttraining #weightlosstips (at Dr. Kate Henry) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQGfjjQN8-y/?utm_medium=tumblr

We need to talk. So many of you are coming into the office wanting to get a bikini body that looks like the body of someone who's taking drugs to suppress their appetite. That's not healthy. I find that women in particular are astonished to learn at the sheer number of adults in the US who are taking stimulants that suppress hunger. SEVEN PERCENT. It's seven percent. One in 14. Normal, healthy healthy women often assume that they just have less control than their stick-thin neighbors. Or that they're less disciplined than the 2 skinny moms in the PTA. Worst, sometimes their GOALS are to look like someone that they don't even realize is taking a medication that comes with serious side effects. My dudes, please stop doing this to yourselves. If someone in your circle looks much thinner than the other 13 people in your circle and never seems hungry... You do the math. Make sure your social media is filled with people who you know are not taking meds. (Hint: this is harder to do than you realize, because no one is obligated to publish this info). People who seem impossibly thin probably are. They're probably doing things behind the scenes to keep them looking like a 12-year-old ballerina that you'd never guess. Instead, follow women who have healthy bodies and who look STRONG. Fit. Happy. Healthy. Who are doing good in the world. Above all, be good to yourself. Be gentle to you. Stay on your own leading edge and stop comparing yourself to other people. Focus on caring for your body and doing things everyday to nourish yourself rather than a number on the scale. 🌼🌼🌼🌼 Important note: This is not a post about shaming people who take stimulant meds. Some of you really need them. But often, there are much much better ways to manage ADHD than stimulants, which can make you irritable, cause you to lose out on sleep, raise your levels of aggression, and impact your relationships and energy levels. If you do take stimulants, then you need a comprehensive holistic plan that will help minimize side effects and optimize health while you're on them. If you're looking to manage ADHD naturally, then I'm your gal. Schedule your free Discovery Call today. (at Dr. Kate Henry) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPTPOQxtRRS/?utm_medium=tumblr

I think loss and grief are some of the hardest things we do as humans. Some days we're bopping along and everything's fine. Other days, the griefs and losses from years back can pull up in a wave and swallow us whole. Take our breath away. Make the whole world stand still. 💜 No one rides for free in this life. Grief is always the price of love because no one lives forever. I wish there was another way. I really, really do. 💜 I admire those of you in the clinic who share stories of your loved ones with me and who are brave enough to let the tears come. It is so clear to me how each of you are living out the best of what you saw in your loved one who's no longer with us. You are the doing the work. Your grief and your joy honor the person, the dream, the relationship, or the life you lost. The intensity of your loss is only exceeded by the intensity of love you felt for your loved one while they were alive, and continue to feel even though they're not still with us in person. I get it. I'm with you. I admire you all. Your vulnerability. The way you keep going. That's how you heal. That's how you do grief. Eventually, all that's left is mostly love. I promise. So much love and hugs your way. #grief #griefandloss #griefandgrieving #ongrief #ongriefandgrieving #glennondoyle #glennondoylequotes #love #loss #loveandloss #terriblethanksforasking #counseling #mindbody #mindbodymedicine (at Dr. Kate Henry) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPJBEx7gVYx/?utm_medium=tumblr

You don't need supplements. Really, you don't. As long as you're willing to eat medicinal foods regularly. Every. Single. Client. I see in my practice gets taught how to use food as medicine using evidence based sources like ODS, a project of the NIH. I take the extra time to teach my clients WHERE to get their nutrients because using food as medicine is * Cost effective 💸 * Sustainable 🌳 * Plastic-free ⛽ * Healthier 💪 * Better for the planet🌏 than buying tons of pills, powders and potions. It's in keeping with my commitment to social justice, environmental justice, and affordable holistic care. Now look, Some of you are going to choose to use supplements because you don't want to (or can't) eat tons fish, take fish oil, get sun each day, or drink tons of milk (can you tell I'm talking about vitamin D in this example?). And you know what? That's totally fine. In that case, I'll help you figure out where to get the best source for the cheapest price. But part of informed consent is making sure that you know your options when it comes to getting adequate nutrition. Caring for people and the planet means making sure I explain food-as-medicine first. I always do. Own where you're at. If you're an olympic level couch potato, celebrate it. Own being soft and delicious and squishy and having an excellent knowledge of every TV show that's been aired in the last 10 years. I happen to think of some of the people with the best senses of humor are folks who've watched a lot of funny TV, and I love being around folks with a good sense of humor.😊 Being a couch potato means you also might have a really incredible knowledge of every podcast, documentary, or news special that the rest of us missed. You're probably FULL of fascinating knowledge or tidbits. I want you to tell me about those things so I don't have to watch myself. 😂 So, being a couch potato can be great in many ways. But you should probably think twice before you complain about 🌬️how out of shape you are, 💨🏃or that you can't run a mile, 😠or that you have high blood pressure 🧁or that you're overweight. It just comes with the territory. I'm a big fan of radical acceptance and ownership. You are allowed to choose being a couch potato over being in shape. There is nothing wrong with that. Potatoes are wonderful. I love potatoes. But just own it. And stop complaining about what comes with the territory. Or... Put in the work to be different. Buy a treadmill and walk on that while you watch TV. Be a... treadmill potato. Probably less often squishy and delicious. But just as funny and entertaining. And with less cardiac risk factors. (Okay, it's an imperfect analogy but you get my point). Look, I know how hard it is to make lifestyle change and get motivated when you're depressed or sick. This post is not about shame. It's actually about self love. 💕 Love and accept yourself where you're at. All of you. Right now. If you ✨ want to change ✨ I can help you. Many couch potatoes think they're just lazy when really they've got a nutritional deficiency that's making them tired. Schedule your free Discovery Call to learn more. And if you need help getting your butt off the couch then listen to @marchayford. This quote is from the Finding Light in Dark times interview on my IGTV. This is something I think needs to change in the natural medicine community. We hear all the time about doctors getting kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies and how unethical that is. But did you know that many functional medicine doctors make money from the supplements they recommend? Yeah... I remember being a patient fifteen years ago and feeling stretched thin just trying to afford to see my functional medicine doctor. She saved my life and it was worth every penny, but it cost me a lot just to see her, sometimes I'd end up leaving with $100 worth of supplemental nutrition products. Once, a family member asked me if my doc was making money off the things she recommended to me. It made my stomach hurt just to think about it... I knew she had my back but still, I didn't like how it felt having to say yes, she charged me a certain percent extra to pay her overhead. So, I decided when I created my own clinic - over a decade and one medical degree later - that I would NEVER make money off of supplements or testing. Never. Because I never want any of my patients having that same belly ache moment. I never want anyone to wonder if I'm recommending something because I think they need it or because of my bottom line. Practicing this way is hard. Overhead is real and supplements could help me pay a large portion of it. But I believe in doing hard things when they're the right thing. I always will. If you want me on your team, schedule your Discovery call today and we'll chat through what I can do for your health. Time in nature improves immune function, reduces cortisol and stress levels🧘 significantly increases positive emotions and self-esteem 🥰 enhances psychological and physical recovery after stress💪 changes brain waves for the better🧠 reduces triglycerides, improves blood pressure♥️ and more. Go read the details and numbers from this systematic review to see for yourself. PMID: 31787069 Really, it's always our grandmothers' advice about health that's the truest, most effective form of healing we can find. Science is just catching up to what our ancestors have known for millennia. It's why I love naturopathic medicine. It combines the best of our ancestral healing knowledge with the most advanced tools modern medicine can provide. The takeaway from this and many other studies on time in nature 🌳is that one of the best things you can do for yourself and your kids is to get outside more. Spend more time under the sky 🌌 rather than artificial lighting or ceilings. We evolved this way, WITH nature, all around us. When your kids need more calm, 😊 send them outside for sky time. When you need calm, point your face to the sky. Take a deep breath. Breathe in the nature around you. 🍃 When your blood pressure skyrockets, same thing. Your medicine in that moment is the sky. Go feel the wind on your skin.🌬️ Look up. A medicine that you can always try, that's always side effect free, that's safe, gentle and effective is More. Sky. Time. 🌅 Nature is the medicine. Depression, panic attacks, irritability, fatigue... You're just hangry, dude. Low blood sugar and malnutrition will do some crazy things to you. Really. If you've ever seen someone who's hypoglycemic or who's in ketoacidosis and you know this is true. It became real for me when I saw person after person in the teaching clinic of my med school with mood or cognition issues as a result of low blood sugar or malnutrition. Some of you are getting so routinely hypoglycemic that it's *actually* ruining your life. It's also *definitely* making the lives of everyone around you harder when you are jerk or have an anxiety attack because you forget to feed yourself 🤷‍♀️ If you're a grown adult who's getting hypoglycemic more than once a month then it's time to do better, love. For the sake of yourself, your relationships, your work performance, your gym gains, or your ability to stay the nice and mature parent that you want to be... It's time to level up. If you don't know how, I will help you. It's 👏what👏 I 👏do👏 everyday. Because look, I GET why so many of us don't know how to eat. It took me years of graduate level nutrition classes, experimentation, my own research, and more to figure out the optimal way to teach people how to nourish themselves. That's because most of the U.S. population has never had any formal nutrition education. We're set loose in the grocery store and we're supposed to figure it out. We think we know enough because we hear people talking on podcasts, see commercials, or read the latest blog. (No) We think, well this is how my parents ate. I'm alive so I must be doing a good enough job. (NO) We think, well my neighbor was overweight and she took this pill and lost weight and only ate 500 calories a day so I should do that too. NO...seriously no🤦‍♀️ Come in and let me teach you the science and data-based way to feed and nurture individual body so that you're happy healthy and NEVER hypoglycemic. Let me use the same techniques with you that I use with my *high performing athletes *formerly depressed, medicated people who now manage their mood with food *previously angry, stressed out moms who now sleep well & more 💜 (at Dr. Kate Henry) https://www.instagram.com/p/CN7b_0YA_q2/?igshid=1nzmlv4jnocfy

✨Meaning and Joy ✨ are good medicines. They're what we need in tough times to keep going. In general, we find meaning 🥰 through service, work, and our contributions to our community and loved ones. We find joy 💕 through creativity, play, and exploration. If you're low on both these days, you're not alone. In fact, it's become clear to me that just as important as it is for me to find the right supplements, nutrition plans, breath work, and exercise routines for my clients, I have to start connecting them to the community and encouraging them to play if their souls are going to feel as full of meaning and joy as they can. So I'm starting a list of organizations that you can connect with to start giving back to the community. And over time I'll post resources to help you play and expand your creativity. If you're local to Pennsylvania check out some of these organizations and contact them to get involved @artsholdinghandsandhearts @chestercountyfutures @thefundchesco @chestercountyfoodbank @dvcccpa @ywcausa http://goodworksinc.org/ These organizations have frequent opportunities to volunteer, outside, in a safe way, or even from a distance. To play, Just get outside. Organize a safely distanced softball league with friends. Play with animals in a shelter. Also, just watch the movie Soul. I'm not exactly sure where this fits in I just know that it does 😉. If you need help, reach out. I'm here for you. If you have more organizations that you think people should dedicate their time to helping, *please* share them below. ❤️ (at Dr. Kate Henry) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNcZ6dhA7X3/?igshid=1mb6ke4wpkxcd

✨Follow who I follow if you want to feel good 😊✨ I advise my female clients almost daily to check out who I follow on instagram and to consider following these women when they're doing their social media audits. Over the years, I have purposely followed strong people who nourish their bodies and who take their performance as athletes, parents, and professionals seriously. It's part of caring for myself and my mindset. It's part of staying inspired by women who work hard and nourish themselves routinely in world where women often get messages to do the opposite. If you're someone who ✨overfunctions when caring for others, yet ✨underfunctions when caring for yourself, then these women and their examples are part of your medicine. They put health first and are redefining what it means to be strong in our culture. As an adult, you get to determine who your role models are. Do it wisely. ❤️ (at Dr. Kate Henry) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMmZklfBzGl/?igshid=1615adjzeeoy6
