A Night to Dismember (1983)
I'll eventually just have to wake up early one day and rewatch this with my full brain power to see if I get it or at least part of it. This is from the '89 director reconstruction and not the '83 original that was thought to be lost. I red that version is even more uncomprehensible. Maybe one day I'll find out. For now I'm ok though.

Late Night with the Devil (2023)
I think it looks pretty cool even though I'm really not fond of the use of AI in films even if it was just in a few images (as the directors claimed). It was ok in an entertainment level which is disappointig since it's the only thing it really has to offer. Ending scene is dull. 4/10 because gore/special effects were fun and I'm a fool for vintage revival horror movies .

Smoking Causes Coughing (2022, Fumer fait tousser)
Smoking Causes Coughing is a french film with an absurdist story, inspired by power rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and general vintage american TV aesthetics, while camera, color and acting wise you can still say it's an european film. It's got an ironic, unnattached, mindless tone that is rare for me to find in french cinema. It overall doesn't make much sense while at the same time it's able to show a certain life consciousness, which it approaches in a satirical kind of dark comedic way. While the stories, individually, look devoid of real content, I think the whole movie really aims to express, in a hyperbolized way, the normality of wasting time, the lack of humanity, the relation between showing happiness over being happy. Why would you have to wear a pre-historical magical helmet to notice that the people you keep around you are wrong for you? Or an aunt who isn't worried the least about her nephew who gets turn to shreds by a shredding machine but instead worries about having to take him to dinner with his mom. In the end, if the world was really to go to an end, the Tobacco Force would have spent their last few hours alive, ironically bumming on cigarettes, looking anxiously at a defective robot repeating the same words in a loop. Maybe the most obvious giveaway of the movie's conscious character is the story of the child: honest, short and straight-forward in its message, just as children usually are, probably the only one meant to be taken literally and giving away another hint on the deeper character of the film. All in all, it's just how it resonated with me. Besides that, it's only my second Quentin Dupieux watch, but with the first one having been Reality, i feel like this was under a similar existencial ceilling. Life is full of all these wonderful things, but when your soul is lost it might as well just be a long burning cigarette that you smoke for instant and fleeting relieve. And it causes coughing.
