How long do you think it takes for a human to be converted into a demon? Most of what we see of the process is from Jinu's flashbacks and narration (which we find out later may not be 100% reliable), and Rumi's growing patterns.

As we hear from Jinu:

"Overnight, my fate was changed. I was praised for my voice. Even by the king himself. [...] But the patterns, they kept spreading until they consumed me. And I was condemned to the demon world. Prisoner of Gwi-Ma for all eternity."

And then later:

"I left my sister, my mother, alone! While I slept in silk sheets in the palace with my belly full every night!"

We don't know exactly how long it took for Jinu to be converted into a demon, though he does say that he first heard Gwi-Ma's voice 400 years ago. Since he says that his voice was praised "overnight" and that he "slept in silk sheets in the palace with my belly full every night," then we know that the effects of his Faustian bargain were immediate but his patterns didn't immediately show.

Meanwhile, Rumi was born a half-demon, but while her patterns were always somewhat visible, she only takes on the demonic traits when she's emotionally distressed.

In fact, during "Golden," her patterns spread to her throat between the time she was preparing for her performance and when she actually performs.

So maybe the more shameful one feels, the more quickly they become a demon? We know that Jinu felt ashamed of his decision even when he was a human, and Rumi has always felt ashamed of her demon heritage. Maybe Rumi's patterns grew because she made selfish decision in releasing "Golden" early.

In the end, during "What It Sounds Like," Jinu's eyes go from their demonic yellow to their more human brown once he chooses to sacrifice himself for Rumi. He declares then that Rumi gave him his soul back.

So maybe being a demon is rooted in selfishness and shame? Maybe it's negative emotions in general.

...I dunno.

I'm going nuts right now over the tiger and magpie in KPDH because I can't figure out what they're supposed to be. Like, I get that they're hojak-do, which are a genre of "tiger and magpie" paintings (minhwa) and that's AWESOME, but physically in that universe, what are they supposed to be? Are they demons? Familiars? Spirits? We see Derpy jump in and out of a tiger sculpture, so is Derpy the sculpture come to life? I'm going nuts over this.

Now that I think about it, exactly what kind of "genre" would Ji-Woon's music fit under? We don't know what he sounded like before the incident with NO SPIN, but after his change in tone, his themes all sound a bit more... I dunno, techno? I don't know how to categorize music.
