Because Eddie is built. There’s no denying it now, not when the proof is right in front of Buck and Buck is actually paying attention. Eddie has obviously been stepping up his workout regimen since returning to the 118, and Buck feels a little weak at the knees as several realizations come crashing down on him at once.

The first is that Eddie is hot. This isn’t really breaking news to him, but the intensity of it is startling.

The second, however, does startle him, and it’s that he’s pretty sure he’s in love with Eddie.

“Buckley,” Eddie huffs, breaking Buck out of his thoughts when Buck was obviously standing in silence for too long. “My eyes are up here.”

“You don’t have a scent at all?”

“I have it, I just got used to not showing it,” Eddie answers and yeah, now Buck can feel that he’s an Alpha. It's a bizarre thing to witness. One moment, Eddie doesn’t smell like anyone and now Buck can clearly catch his scent. Like Eddie has a switch inserted in his glands. Eddie looks around the table again and laughs softly. “I feel like everyone wants me to show off, and no one is brave enough to ask for that”.

(Or, Eddie knows that parts of him are broken beyond repair and it would be too selfish to ask Buck to settle for him. He's going to do it anyway.)

Eddie clears his throat, shifting his eyes from Buck’s hands and chest and up to Buck’s face, because he absolutely wasn’t checking out his best friend while he was holding a tiny kitten.

“Eddie,” Buck’s voice is urgent, his hands uncurling to reveal the tiny, fluffy black kitten with white socks. “She looks like Bobby.”

Eddie blinks at the kitten for a long moment, because he has no idea how Buck is making that kind of connection.

“She has Bobby’s eyes,” Buck insists, turning the kitten to look at him again. “Not in color, obviously, but in attitude. The vibes.”

Or, the one where Eddie sees Buck with a small kitten, realizes he’s in love, and spontaneously combusts, but not necessarily in that order.

Irritated, Eddie clenched his fists, starting to turn around. "Why would Buck be eating with us - "

The words died in his throat along with the shatter of the mug against the floor. But Eddie barely noticed he dropped it, his mouth slightly agape as he stared at Buck, took in the bruises, and the blood, and general brokenness of the man before him.

Or: After the Lawsuit, Buck is starting to think his team will never forgive him and is feeling lonelier than ever, when his dad shows up, looking for money that Buck doesn't have. Now, his ribs are broken and his face has been pummelled into one big bruise. All he wants to do is retreat to his empty apartment and wallow in his own self-pity, but before that he needs to get his keys, which he'd left at the station the previous night.

Everyone else is on shift, so he's hoping he can sneak into the locker room and be gone before anyone notices he was there, but this is Buck, so of course, nothing goes to plan.

“Take your time,” Carla said sternly. “Don’t rush this because you’re worried, Buck, do you hear me? Any change in your scent could just set him off.”

“Yes, thank you, I know how to deal with Alphas,” he drawled.

“Yes, but Eddie’s not just another Alpha and I think it’s time we acknowledged that.”

"Shit." He looks to Hen and suddenly understands her apprehension. "I'm not due to take heat leave for another week."

"Well," Hen says quietly, dropping a comforting hand to Buck's forearm and giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Looks like your body didn't get the memo."
