Introducing FirefoxOS 2.5 Add-Ons

FirefoxOS 2.5 Add-Ons package is composed of JavaScript, CSS and other assets, but it doesn’t run as a standalone app.

Add-ons on Firefox OS are even more powerful and it provides customization not only to the browser, but the whole phone experience, including tweaks to the homescreen and system apps.

The manifest is very simple, just like any other FxOS app. The “matches” field works like a filter to where the add-on will be loaded. Filters determines if an app is affected by the add-on.

Robo Wunderkind, the Lego of the future, aims to build your own robot, have fun, and pick up basic coding skills, teaching kids kids how algorithms and code work. The revolutionary new robotics toy for kids launched today at Kickstarter and runs until October 29 with a goal of raising $70,000. Robo Wunderkind is a set of blocks for building robots, just like Lego, allowing kids to build a robot by snapping blocks together. Meerkat, the live streaming app that lets you stream videos live to your twitter followers has now released its API for developers.

Meerkat wants to create a more open community where developers can work together with their dev team in order to make the best of live video streaming.

First Look at Mozilla Webmaker app on FirefoxOS

Mozilla announced at Mobile World Congress plans to help a wider audience create the mobile internet.

As previously mentioned, Webmaker helps smartphone users become creators of a Web that will improve their lives and communities, by making simple apps for things like promoting a small business, sharing community news, or building a lesson plan for students.

The concept is amazing and simple to use and runs smooth. It really help people create a simple mobile app or blog in just a few clicks, as you can see on the gallery. 

Users can share their app creations using a simple URL via SMS, Facebook, WhatsApp and other platforms. The apps will load in any mobile web browser, powered by HTML5.

Webmaker app is free, open source and available in over 20 languages. 

I have tested on a FirefoxOS device running the latest beta build of 2.2.

Mozilla’s Node.js modules for Firefox OS

Mozilla has open-sourced node-firefox, a collection of Node.js modules to help developers create Firefox OS apps.

The modules allow developers to interact with Firefox using Mozilla’s DevTools remote protocol in their already existing Node.js tool chains, but through Mozilla’s WebIDE tool in a more terminal-based experience. Each module performs a different task in a separate repository, ultimately published to the npm registry.

Current node-firefox module capabilities include port discovery, runtime connections, simulator launching and reloading style sheets. The modules can also install, uninstall and launch apps. Mozilla is exploring the possibility of adding WebCLI integration, DevTools debugger attachments and Firefox OS custom editions.

The article uses justindarc/fxos-web-server which is a JavaScript web server built with TCPSocket, a raw TCP socket API in JavaScript.

Good to see FFOS getting some advanced features where you get access to native APIs to create desktop-like experiences.

Google teams up with Disney to inspire future coders!

Google has partnered with Disney to make a new cartoon series, Miles from Tomorrowland, to inspire kids to code.

The objective behind this partnership is an effort to get kids interested in computer science.

The cartoon introduces the preschool crowd to Miles Callisto, a young space adventurer, and his family -- big sister (coding extraordinaire) Loretta and their scientist parents Phoebe and Leo.

"We really wanted Loretta to be aspirational," said "Miles From Tomorrowland" creator Sascha Paladino. "There's a lot of Miles wanting to learn from her, like, 'How did you do that?' A big takeaway from our talks with Google is that you can do anything with coding. And we wanted to show that."

The show is designed to not only fuel kids’ interest in space but also coding, teamwork, critical thinking and exploration.

There is also a Miles from Tomorrowland: Missions app to accompany the series, available on Android and iOS. It offers games similar to the intergalactic missions presented on the show.
