Trans allyship means not acting insulted if someone calls you trans, by the way. Like that's a pretty big cornerstone actually. It's a genuinely important part of trans allyship that if someone says you are trans (either as a misunderstanding or meant as an insult), you do not go 'ew no i'm cis, how dare you'.
No amount of 'it's fine to be called trans if you're actually trans' will cover up the fact that your immediate reaction was to distance yourself from trans people and paint us as a bad group to be a part of. Trans allyship requires more from you than just thinking trans people deserve to exist, and at a bare minimum it requires an understanding that "trans" is not an insult.
#completely derailed an 'argument' with someone#when they said “You look like a fucking trans” and I said “Uh... okay.”#More out of shock than anything else. Didn't expect that.#But they were more shocked than I was#and yelled “fuck you” and left#like how am I supposed to feel about that? Mildly misgendered? okay#transgender rights#transgender

going to get #canceled but. I do think that objectively the whole insistence on Celeborn being a pathetic useless betacuck is a big disservice to Galadriel's character as whole btw. Because a) that's NOT what Tolkien intended for them first and foremost (elaborating later) and b) wow are you implying that no man would dare to enter in a marriage with a powerful woman unless he's a complete ameba, because else he would want to "tame" her. Of course she's such a shrew, instead of ~mindful and demure~ that no guy with self respect would marry her. Congrats for having worse ideas on marriage than a book written in the 1950s i guess
Now, what i think about JRRT's intentions here. Of course you do not need to be a norse sagas expert to like lotr, of course, but that's the whole material from which jrrt took his own inspiration. I've mentioned on the tags on a post (i'll later edit my own so to put the link on It) that "giver of gifts beyond the power of kings" , which Celeborn gets called by Galadriel, sounds like a Beowulf reference, and it's probably meant to be a call back to such a context. He also gets called the wise, still by Galadriel, and he is the one who welcomes the Fellowship of the Ring when they arrive to Lothlorien & that has the specific function to present himself as the ruler of such Kingdom, a noble and wise lord that won't be out of Place in an ancient saga.
And that's the matter, btw. Because for how much Celeborn can be wise & give advice and gifts to the Fellowship, the whole subversion is that well, Galadriel Is WISER. Her gifts and advice are much more remarkable (the gift of her hair!) and she's the one whose words have the deepest effect in the companions. Even their introduction Is a little subversion per sé, since Celeborn is the one who starts talking & greeting the Fellowship, Galadriel initially stays silent and doesn't talk. Once She does, however, it's immediately obvious that she's an extremely remarkable woman and that she's far from being a simple queen consort.
Now then, the subversion is "wise and noble lord -> the apparent queen consort is much wiser and has a deeper look than him". I don't really think that the subversion would work THAT well if Celeborn was a complete idiot with 0 reason to stay here. I mean, which kind of subversion is supposed to be if the matter is that none respects Celeborn (whereas the Fellowship follows his advice to not go near to Fangorn, and they go there only because there's not other choice) because It can be seen at the first glance that he doesn't matter shit? We also forget that's a patriarchial world both in and out of universe, and that Galadriel gets often accused of practicing sorcery from the Rohirrim (both from despicable people like Grima and from good heroic characters like Eomer) , so the whole point is to prove that no, she's actually good and competent at her job! And she's good and competent MORE than her husband. Would It really have the same effect if Celeborn was a complete pathetic idiot ? Wow she's competent just because her husband Is idiotic. Groundbreaking! Because if her husband was truly competent, his wife couldn't be more competent than him, right? Because women can't be more competent than men, as a rule, right ? It's how it works in real life, right? Because if a woman has a proper competent husband, she would know that she's to stay a step behind him, right????

Disabled is such a neutral descriptive word.
You are dis-abled. You are not able to do some of the things you would normally be biologically expected to.
Yet you tell someone who needs glasses to see they are disabled and they may be are shocked, or recoil, or deny it. Why? They are not able to see without aid. Disability aid.
Being disabled is treated like a sentence... and that's the biggest part of the problem: the idea that you are made less because of it. Less than full human. Because you can't do ___.
The solution to ableism isn't for me to "stop calling myself disabled", it's for everyone to stop treating "disabled" as a bad word

Love @aikewritesfic's reply, that being magical makes them more resilient to disease and injury and overall healthier.
If other sources are taken into account - fair if not - then the average lifespan is about 137 - 138yrs, which suggests living even older. Yet at 115 Albus looks appropriate for his age, if INCREDIBLY fit.
Albus was swimming breaststroke like a champion and climbing over rocks. Walking straight-backed, dueling, power-walking... strong.
So they don't visibly age slower - but perhaps their physical and mental condition does...? Or at least is supported by magic.
Not too sure the dating-age thing is particularly applicable. (Unless visible age is somehow a big deal for dating...?) You see a lot older than 10yr 'age gaps' in muggle relationships - the whole point was that Remus was being ridiculous. Like saying he was 'too poor' for a relationship - it's silly and meant to sound silly.
He is trying to find an excuse that 'isn't his fault' so he doesn't feel guilty about being with her or letting her down. He can't bring himself to simply say 'I'm not interested and won't be seeing you anymore', because he is interested and has terrible impulse control. So he tries to scare her away with age. And money. And wolf stuff. But Tonk's, and everyone else, isn't silly lol
Since nobody else has any issue with them having a 'gap' of 10 years they might be more accepting of love than Muggles in that aspect.
I have a question. It's said that wizards have longer lifespans than muggles right? Does that mean they age more slowly or do they just live longer in their old age?
Sorry if that’s a bit confusing. Let me give an example: if a wizard meets a muggle of the same age in their teenage years and sees them again in their 40s or 50s, would the wizard look younger than the muggle?
What an interesting question. Kind of a tricky question too - both because there isn't much data, and because JKR is extremely bad with numbers. that's just something you have to accept, if you're trying to come up with consistent canon worldbuilding.
The only characters we meet who the text treats as "old" are Olivander, Dumbledore, and Slughorn. (I guess technically Grindelwald, Dippet, and Flamel, but don't know much about them.) If Dumbledore was born in 1881 and died in 1997 (as per Rita Skeeter's book) then he was 115 when he died. Which means he was 61 when Tom opened the Chamber of Secrets, and still a redhead. So far, so normal. Tons of sixty-year-olds haven't gone white or grey.
Slughorn also taught Tom Riddle, and would have to have been... probably in his thirties or forties when they had that conversation about Horcruxes? Which would put Slughorn between 80 and 90 during the main timeline of the books, where Harry describes him as an "enormously fat, bald, old man." He's also being pulled out of retirement, so... that still fits? Voldemort and Hagrid are basically the same age (like 70-71 during the final book.) Neither of them are described as "old" - but Hagrid's giant blood is probably making a difference, same with Voldemort's snake experiments.
Rita Skeeter is also useful here, because we know she's 43 during Book 4, and when we see in the Death Eater trial flashbacks (about ten or so years prior) Harry describes her as looking visibly younger. Trial!Ludo Bagman is young enough for Moody to call him "boy" (20s?) with fits with him being "a powerfully built man gone slightly to seed" ten years later. Karkaroff looks "much younger; his hair and goatee were black," not silver like they are during Book 4. But, Karkaroff is also a very high-strung guy who has spent the last ten years under a lot of stress, I would not be at all surprised if he's gone prematurely white like Peter and Remus.
Speaking of Remus... he's 36 during Book 6, and thinks he's "too old" to marry Tonks. It's a little unclear how old Tonks is, but I always puts her as a contemporary of Bill, since Mrs. Weasley keeps trying to set them up. So, mid twenties? A ten year age gap is something you see in *muggle* relationships, and they do fit the "half your age plus seven" rule. I would think that if you aged more slowly as an adult, an age gap like that would be even *less* of a problem.
So, with the the evidence we have... and knowing that it goes against a lot of accepted fanon... I think I have to go with the second option. The canon answer is that wizards don't actually age slower, they just spend longer looking old.
#btw the half your age plus 7 rule is gross... eugh#ik its not that serious OP you were just using it as an example of what Remus/people might think of#it's just so steeped in sexism and ageism it's ridiculous. No scientific basis and usually used to describe the 'ideal' age of partner#It is ONLY used to shame people by appealing to a false authority - and thats it. It sounds smart... but it isn't.#I find it deeply uncomfortable as someone whose long term partner has a 17yr 'age gap' with me#Seeing people doing math in person to 'work out' if my partner is 'okay for me' only to say 'oh watch out he's a bit off'#I am an adult? I can decide things for myself without made up rules? How is it socially acceptable to do this to people#I just gotta yap about it when it comes up lol people just actually do this shit and I wish it would die out#hp#wizarding world#hp meta#ww

Maybe not exactly what was asked for, but I had a (shallow) look into what might explain this… Or at least what could be used to explain it B^)
Both use Floo powder + the same strategy: your body/parts experiencing a spinning sensation (also being immune to heat). So it does appear to be partial Floo transportation.
Harry dashed over to the fireplace, seized the pot of Floo powder, and threw a pinch into the grate, causing emerald flames to burst into life there. He knelt down quickly, thrust his head into the dancing fire, and cried, “Number twelve, Grimmauld Place!” His head began to spin as though he had just got off a fairground ride though his knees remained firmly planted upon the cold office floor. He kept his eyes screwed up against the whirling ash, and when the spinning stopped, he opened them to find himself looking out upon the long, cold kitchen of Grimmauld Place. (OttP ch32) Harry pulled off his cloak and, striding over to the fireplace, found what he was looking for within seconds: a small box containing glittering Floo powder. He crouched down in front of the empty grate, his hands shaking. He had never done this before, though he thought he knew how it must work. Sticking his head into the fireplace, he took a large pinch of powder and dropped it onto the logs stacked neatly beneath him. They exploded at once into emerald-green flames. “Number twelve, Grimmauld Place!” Harry said loudly and clearly. It was one of the most curious sensations he had ever experienced; he had traveled by Floo powder before, of course, but then it had been his entire body that had spun around and around in the flames through the network of Wizarding fireplaces that stretched over the country: This time, his knees remained firm upon the cold floor of Umbridge’s office, and only his head hurtled through the emerald fire. . . . And then, abruptly as it had begun, the spinning stopped. Feeling rather sick and as though he was wearing an exceptionally hot muffler around his head, Harry opened his eyes to find that he was looking up out of the kitchen fireplace at the long, wooden table, where a man sat poring over a piece of parchment. (OttP ch29) Amos Diggory’s head was sitting in the middle of the flames like a large, bearded egg. It was talking very fast, completely unperturbed by the sparks flying around it and the flames licking its ears. (GoF ch11)
However, it seems Floo transportation might be a tightly Ministry controlled form of travel, connected + activated + severed by them - that can be monitored, perhaps even tracked who goes where:
“Er — yes — sorry about that,” said Mr. Weasley, lowering his hand and looking over his shoulder at the blasted fireplace. “It’s all my fault. It just didn’t occur to me that we wouldn’t be able to get out at the other end. I had your fireplace connected to the Floo Network, you see — just for an afternoon, you know, so we could get Harry. Muggle fireplaces aren’t supposed to be connected, strictly speaking — but I’ve got a useful contact at the Floo Regulation Panel and he fixed it for me. I can put it right in a jiffy, though, don’t worry. I’ll light a fire to send the boys back, and then I can repair your fireplace before I Disapparate.” (GoF ch4) “How’re we going?” asked Fred, looking shaken. “Floo powder?” “No,” said Dumbledore, “Floo powder is not safe at the moment, the Network is being watched. You will be taking a Portkey." (OotP ch22) (+ the quote from HBP above - arranging a one-off connection)
This makes it sound like you gotta have permission to have your fireplace hooked up at all, and you need to have a reason - even if that reason is - like 'I've got a big family of kids who can't apparate'.
...But, with all this illegal chatter going on, even between people within the ministry, is either
Unable to be tracked if you don't completely pass through Or
Not closely monitored, even when from the school (also note all the communication Sirius and Harry did)
“Someone creeping into his yard in the dead of night? More likely there’s a very shell-shocked cat wandering around somewhere, covered in potato peelings. But if the Improper Use of Magic lot get their hands on Mad-Eye, he’s had it — think of his record — we’ve got to get him off on a minor charge, something in your department — what are exploding dustbins worth?” (GoF ch11) (Conversation between Arthur and Diggory via head-in-the-fire)
... With how calm everyone seems to be about doing it, more concerned about being physically found out, rather than the Ministry 'tapping in' - I would assume it's the former. Maybe I'm missing something.
@remus-poopin's theory seems to hold water so far. The lines between fireplaces are not kept open to Floo travel without a reason, and full travel between them can be monitored. Communication is possible and legal - or at least untraceable - even if a line isn't open to travel.
So - would Umbridge's office be a security risk pre OotP...?
It wasn't usually kept open - Umbridge had it opened because she worked for the Ministry and made frequent trips back there. Or
It IS kept open (perhaps most established wizarding houses and buildings have open Floo networks) but it is closely monitored for transport - because it is Hogwarts.
Please jump in and tell me I am dumb stinky and missed something, I have a cold right now and can't think haha
OK but if Sirius could talk to Harry in the Gryffindor fire in OoTP until Umbridge puts the floo network under observation, then there's a way into Hogwarts that's really easy and I feel like shouldn't have been overlooked

I keep wondering, what if Sirius Black hadn’t found James Potter on that first train ride to Hogwarts?
Instead, the door he slid open revealed not a boy with messy hair and an ego to match, but a quiet, guarded Severus Snape?
Just two boys, neither loved quite right, thrown into the same compartment before the world told them they were meant to be enemies.
Sirius flopped down opposite the first lone figure he saw—black hair, hollow stare, arms crossed as if daring the world to speak first. He grinned. “Hi. You look like you hate everything. I think we’ll get along.” Severus looked up, unimpressed. “You talk too much.” Sirius tilted his head. “And you look like you haven’t smiled since birth.” Smirk met sneer in silence. It wasn’t friendship, yet, but something had clicked. The corner of Sirius’ mouth twitched. “Yeah. We’ll definitely get along.”
