yes another Zukka AU

Ok so Zuko got put in charge of a boat and its crew at age 13 (not the brightest decision right Ozai) and Hakoda was on sea a year later right? So imagine Sokka, really wanting to go with his dad, deciding to snuck in their boat, so when his dad finally finds him, its too late to go back but still, they can’t let him stay on a WAR boat so they set a course for a port to contact someone from the tribe to pick him up but while they were there, you have 14 years old Zuko meeting 13 years old Sokka and both have 0 idea who the other is until someone, probably lieutenant Jee, comes up to Zu and is like “Your Highness, we are ready to depart” except that in the short time the boys were together, Zuko got told about the raids and a first hand story about the Fire Nation’s “GrEaTnEsS” so he’s like “wait a second my dad’s an asshole” and he’s just like “ok no we are going to help Sokka’s dad” and after a lengthy discussion of life choices, parenting styles and boats intricacies, Zuko comes out with a new dad, a boyfrie- best friend and a new life goal, which is to end the war. He also gives several people a new life goal too, which is to punch the Fire Lord in the face, or whack him in the head with a bat, they’re not picky

Ok so AU where Zuko has a connection to the spirit world(no he wasn’t blessed but he spent three years running towards the first magical shit he saw so fuck you this is my headcannon) and so he doesn’t chase the Avatar but the spirits always try to push Aang and Zuko towards one another cause yk spirits like to fuck with them and one day they finally meet each other, probably a bit after the attempted siege in the NWT, but Zuko is like “No I can’t teach you firebending i dont wanna be in this war” so Roku just possesses Aang and lectures the FUCK outa Zuko because “HOW DARE YOU YOUNG MAN, TO LET YOUR NATION DOWN AND NOT SAVING THE OPPRESSED AND NOT KICKING MY EX’S GRANDKID-

So yea, Roku likes to berate important children

Zuko not being an ass in book one

So

Zuko sees the Big Avatar Beacon and goes to the southern water tribe BUT when he sees Aang is just a child and that there’s literally no warriors in the village (‘cause no Zu, the water tribes warriors are only man), he’s like “ok fuck it I’m not gonna give a 12 year old to my face-burning child-manipulating father and just says very awkwardly “Sorry for breaking your wall but I physically can’t bring you with me so bye” and then months later, he and Iroh works at the Jasmine Dragon and the Gaang comes in so Zuko does everything in his power to avoid them but Noooo so he has to serve them and when he comes to the table, Aang is like “FIREBENDER!!!POTENTIAL MASTER!” and Sokka is quietly having his bi crisis in his corner so that’s how Zuko joins the Gaang in this AU

Zukka: Warm perks

Zukka going on a hunt in the forest and it starts raining so they sit under a tree to be protected from the rain but Sokka is like “its so cooold” so he sticks himself onto Zuko and immediately says “fuck man, are all firebenders warm like you?” so they stay like that till the rain stops while Sokka is progressively invading Zuko’s personal space. When they return the whole team is huddled together cause rain:) so Sokka says “guy, GUYS ZUKO IS A PORTABLE HEATER EVERYONE ON HIM” so thats the story on why they don’t sleep in sleeping bags anymore

Hey I just got an idea

What if Zuko got Sokka’s necklace instead of Katara’s and he kept it but one day he had it with him and he didn’t had pockets so the most sensible thing was putting it on so he did but kind of forgot about it ‘till one day (before Ozai’s fall) Sokka noticed it and he was like “Hey this is my necklace! I wondered where it was!” and Zuko was all like “Shit I forgot to give it back to you im sorry” but Sokka was just standing there trying not to die because Zuko looked way better with water tribe accessories

ATLA (zukka….) au where everything is mostly the same except that the phrase “friend of the Avatar” is a euphemism for being gay, a la the phrase friend of Dorothy

(the phrase started towards the start of the 100 year war because in this universe Avatar Roku was some flavor of gay, then Sozin canonically banned gay marriage after their situationship went downhill. so people had to be more subtle about communicating their identities, something something something, the phrase became semi-commonplace throughout the fire nation and later the earth kingdom. maybe it started even earlier because of bi queen kyoshi. who knows!)

miscommunication and self-discovery ensues throughout the events of ATLA:

early on into his banishment and search for the avatar, Zuko runs into someone who casually mentions that they’re a “friend of the Avatar” and he’s immediately like “THE AVATAR IS ALIVE? WHERE ARE THEY. TELL ME”

…he learns a new phrase that day! perhaps he didn’t even know gay people existed until that awkward encounter (bc sheltered fire nation royal.) maybe he does some self reflection at this point, or perhaps he puts off his sexuality crisis in favor of his avatar hunting mission. who’s to say?

(the next time he hears someone say they’re “a friend of the avatar” he asks if they’re gay or if they actually know the avatar. you know, just in case they actually do.

….and the next time after that, too.

but after that he catches on pretty quickly that, no, it’s REALLY just a turn of phrase, and he does not repeat the mistake again.)

+ early into the series events sokka runs into some confusion when he mentions to a stranger that he’s a friend of the avatar while aang isn’t around—

sokka: hey so uhh i’m actually a friend of the avatar… think i can get a discount for that??

kindly ally shopkeeper: oh! i love that for you!! you know, i have a cousin who’s gay, real swell guy. anyways about the discount—

book one sokka, canonically sexist and with perhaps a fragile masculinity: what wait a sec, IM NOT GAY??????

shopkeeper: oh that’s okay, you don’t have to explain yourself or put a label on it to me (:

(sokka does in fact get a discount.)

he walks back to katara who was waiting for him and overheard the whole conversation, and she says “you know, sokka, it’s fine if you like boys.” sokka responds as you’d expect he would at this time.

(some amount of time later, sokka comes up to katara and aang very nervously and says “hey guys. i think i might. um. be a friend of the Avatar.”

and aang, confused but enthusiastic, goes “aww buddy, we’re already friends!!!!”)

at some point they’re fighting Zuko and during a back-and-forth exchange, Sokka proclaims “i won’t let you hurt him, the Avatar is my friend!” or something to that effect

Zuko, who has learned from his past mistakes in misconstruing this phrase, says “love is love. but your sexuality will not stop me from capturing the Avatar”

Zuko: Bad new, Aang is now concerned and trying to find which part of my trauma had needed me to learn lockpicking and I don’t have the emotional courage to tell him it was my cousin’s idea to look cool in front of cute girls and guys

Zuko: Good news, a cute boy saw me

Zuko: Bad news, its Sokka and since he knew me with my phoenix tail, saw me vomit the first time I flew on Appa and know I can play the tsungi horn, he will never find me cool

Zukka AU where Zuko has a tiny bit more common sense and realizes his father is batshit insane a few months after the start of his banishment so he ends up being a menace for the fire nation (especially Zhao) and NOBODY can catch him and his crew (which are loyal to him cause Iroh tells them the story of his scar earlier) and one day he has to go to Kyoshi Island to restock and also to catch up with a friend (Suki) he made while talking shit about the Firelord but when he arrives everything is on fire because Zhao, who was tasked with the mission of retrieving the Avatar after informants report the Big Avatar Beacon, is an ass so Zuko goes to help and almost gets killed by Sokka, who does not know who he is, and they all end up with very awkward presentations to do but the Gaang doesn’t rly trust Zuko at first and then Suki (who know about the scar) makes a joke about “the Firelord burning Zuko’s other eye because it worked so well the first time” and they are all like yk what after much reflection we are adopting you and Sokka is like “Aang if you don’t kill the Firelord i will” and-

I absolutely love (Zukka or not) fanfics in which Zuko has very dubious talents like lockpicking or pickpocketing or shady bargaining and being generally good with boats and where he doesn’t always live the lavish lifestyle of a prince and where Sokka is the one who can put shit together in nature and who can actually hunt and know what to eat and whatnot and is super good at geography and-
