I quit grad school on Tuesday

I gave it 7 years of my life and thousands of dollars. I was so close to finishing. But I lost heart somewhere around the 4th year. I honestly don't know why I dragged it out for another three years. I suppose I wanted to see it through. To complete something. My advisor said I could have requested an extension. Petition courses be waived. But. I couldn't face another bleak year. Sometimes. You just need to know when to let shit go. This was one of those things that I needed to let go. I can't say I feel freedom yet. But I also don't feel regret either. Just ambivalent. Wondering if this was the right choice.

I was incredibly moved by Mike Shinoda’s tweet today, sending his love to the fans when he must be in so much pain himself, and then I was even more moved by the fans’ responses to it. It’s easy to think of the world as a harsh place at the moment, but this is a powerful reminder of how much kindness and love there is in it. Linkin Park’s music has eased the suffering of so many people, and now those people are trying to repay the favour when the members of the band need support. I hope it helps. I think it will. I think I needed to see this.

People would ask us, ‘Well, Jonathan Davis practically grew up in a morgue and was molested and all these horrible things. What gives you the right to be angry?’ But you don’t have to have gone through the worst things in the world to be sad. I think that’s something that ultimately really connected with our fans: that you don’t have to be an outcast and a fuck-up to take something from this music on an emotional level. If that makes us dull, then fine.

The power house that was Chester

I know this is going to be my second post about him in two days but I still can’t believe it. Chester is dead.

I’ve spent a lot of time listening to his music after his death. In these two days, I’ve understood more of his music than I had in the past decade that I had been listening to him, but there’s also one other thing I noticed: His voice was a powerhouse.

Let me explain. 

Listen to this (it starts at 00:23). There’s no music so you get to hear his voice clearly. Can you feel the energy flowing through it? I want you to scream right now, the hardest you can - is it powerful enough? No. You may have even hurt yourself trying to. That’s what I’m talking about. People think he screamed in his songs, but he didn’t. His voice was just that powerful.
