If Black People Are So Smart, Why Don't Most Black People Have Life Insurance?
If Black People Are So Smart, Why Don't Most Black People Have Life Insurance?
"That's a bit cheeky to say, 'If Black People Are So Smart, Why Don't Most Black People Have Life Insurance ?' " Sorry to have to put it so bluntly, but we don't. It isn't the easiest subject to talk about, however let's face the facts.
Tumblr media
One day (statistically speaking LOL!) You will DEAD ! The only funny thing about this (funny peculiar, not funny "HaHa") is that even though we know this, plus we've experienced family, friends and even strangers die, we don't think about life insurance. That's a bit odd! Because of this wonderful tool called the Internet, people are now able to put up GoFundMe pages online to request funding for various projects, business ideas etc. Believe it or not, one of the biggest trends now is putting up GoFundMe pages to pay for funerals. Excuse the pun, there is no FUN in someone dying, and having to arrange their funeral. Especially when the person who has passed does not have life insurance. Imagine the physical, financial and EMOTIONAL burden of having lost a loved one, then having to ask every and anyone to help to pay for the burial, of someone who had their entire working life, to pay for or at least pay something towards, their own funeral and they didn't bother. What would YOUR thoughts be towards that person, if YOU were the one who had to pay? Sure, many people will say, "Oh it's ok, I loved them so dearly, I will just pay for it." One way to look at it, is this; If they loved YOU so dearly, could they have put at least a little money aside every month, to pay for the inevitable - their funeral? Also if they loved you so dearly, they could have made you a beneficiary of their life insurance policy, so that you could have easily paid for their funeral AND received a payout too! Excuse the directness of this article, however the fact remains that most black people don't have life insurance, and we NEED to address this. So, let's look at some of the reasons why most black people don't have life insurance. History If you look at the origins of modern life insurance you will see that it began in 1706 in England by William Talbot (Bishop Of Oxford) and Sir Thomas Allen. Their company Amicable Society for a Perpetual Assurance Office or Amicable Society as it was also called, was started with approximately 2000 members who each contributed a fixed annual payment which was divided at the end of the year among the wives and children of the deceased members. These people were considered to be among the British elite. Additionally most of the British elite at that time (as now) were VERY wealthy. As you are probably aware, in 1706 black people were definitely not considered "elite" (Hint: Transatlantic slavery, of which Britain was a major player.) In fact according to Wikipedia "By the 1690s, the English were shipping the most slaves from West Africa." Basically, black people were not in a position to obtain life insurance. However, having said that, the irony is that they possible could have been insured, as property of slave owners, who also would have been the beneficiaries in the event of the slaves death. So Why Don't Most Black People Have Life Insurance In The 21st Century ? Up to a few decades ago, many of us were definitely unaware of true wealth building. We are great at spending moneybut not always great at spending it WISELY. (See: Should Black Should Black People Invest In The Stock Market ?)  Another reason that most black people don't have life insurance, is because until recently, most black people did not know how to invest money for inter-generational wealth building purposes. Yes, that's right. Life insurance is a form of inter-generational wealth building. More about this later. Can you now see that it's a real problem that most black people don't have life insurance in the 21st century ? Think about this; What do you value most in your LIFE? Your dog or cat ? You've probably got pet insurance. Your car ? You've probably got car insurance. Your house and possessions ? You've probably got house and contents insurance. Your holidays ? You probably get holiday insurance when you travel.** You MOBILE / CELL / SMART PHONE ?!! Yep, you've probably got that insurance too. Your LIFE ? Nada, none, not a penny invested in life insurance. Duh!! Hello? Anyone home? Has someone got their priorities a little mixed up?!! You probably noticed the stars** next to holiday insurance. That's because for many black people, that's the only time we DO get some type of insurance on our lives. Watch this excellent video by a lovely woman, who explains thoroughly why there is an URGENT NEED for ALL OF US to review this desperately silly situation that black people are in. After reading this article and watching this video, if you feel that life insurance is not for you, please realise that YOU WILL KNOWINGLY BE PUTTING AN UNNECESSARY BURDEN ON THE PEOPLE YOU SAY YOU CARE ABOUT !! AND ADDING TO THE EXISTING BURDENS OF THE BLACK RACE. Simply put, when you DIE, or transition or pass on or pass away, or float up to heaven or WHATEVER, someone else WILL HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY of putting your body into the ground in a nice coffin, or getting you cremated, (we will talk about the importance of Wills in another article) and it costs money - LOTS of money. If you don't have life insurance, that money that someone else will have to pay for your funeral, they could have spent it on: their children, their childrens education, something for themselves. An investment, anything. Speaking about investments, not many people realise that some of the wealthy people today became wealthy because their parents could be bothered to invest in a life insurance policy that meant their children and grandchildren etc. inherited the value of the life insurance policy when the policy holder died. That is just one of the reasons why the black race is one of the poorest races in 2018. We aren't doing this enough - leaving our younger generations LARGE SUMS OF CASH and teaching them about financial literacy. Dr. Boyce Watkins, from The Black Business School, gives an excellent talk on this: So why do you think it's ok, for someone else to HAVE TO pay for YOUR funeral ?? Guess what ? It's NOT OK. Here is a quick test for anyone who does NOT have life insurance: Step 1: Image the type of funeral you'd like to have. Horse drawn carriage maybe? Or a shiny black Mercedes hearse? Oak coffin or maybe mahogany wood? 10 people in attendance? 100, 200 ? The engraved words on your headstone have got to be right too, yes? Definitely NO typos ! Step 2: Now think of the people who will be burying you, and imagine the type of funeral THEY will arrange for you. (Remember to consider the cost of the hearse, church / mosque / venue, undertakers costs, headstone, graveyard costs, coffin, interment / burial costs, reception / gathering etc. etc. etc.) Step 3: Ask them if they are financially prepared to pay for your funeral and how much are they willing to spend, because you were thinking / hoping they were going to foot the bill. Step 4: Listen carefully to their reaction !! While you are alive, and are of sound mind, your funeral is YOUR responsibility. So, get it sorted ! We want to be saying, "we're financially literate, we've got life insurance", not asking, "why don't most black people have life insurance?" Well, hopefully now we can see how vital this article is, and will spread the word and, as a community, we will have this very necessary discussion and DO THE RIGHT THING. Should Black People Invest In The Stock Market
Tumblr media
Online Stock Market Trading And Why Black People MUST Invest This articles addresses what is online stock market trading and why black people must invest. What is the stock market and what are shares? So we can easily understand what the stock market is let's have a look at the analogy of a street market. Business owners / market traders bring their fruits and vegetables into a certain location to attract potential customers. The market traders products are known as stock. We know this because when they sell some of their fruits and vegetables they have to re-stock (get some more stock). Each time they make a sale each piece of fruit or veg brings in it's original purchase price, plus some profit. Now let's imagine one of the market traders co-owns the market stall. He or she has a business partner, who although not physically present in the market, contributes financially to start the business, keeps the business going or helps the business grow with additional advice, specialist knowledge, financial or other input / investment. As an investor this business partner has the right to own a share or percentage of the business. Additionally he or she also has the right to enjoy profits from the business or a growth on any investment they have made towards the business. This is the same with stock market investments. You can buy some shares, which is the same as investing in a company. You are giving them more money to grow their business, and as the company grows, you will watch the value of your shares grow and often receive what are called dividends. Dividends are often profits that a company will issue to it's shareholders at regular intervals. Why is the stock market a good investment? The stock market is a good investment because typically the value of companies usually rise. Sometimes a company's value will decrease or a company can cease trading in which case you can lose your entire investment, however most companies increase in value. Here are a few examples:
Tumblr media
Facebook Google Amazon Paypal Tesla Tescos Walmart Etc. It's usually the companies that we use everyday that make the best investments, simply because you, me and everyone else is spending money with these companies EVERYDAY, so their profits are increasing EVERYDAY!! Make a list of the companies you spend money with,
Tumblr media
then use this link to check how well they are performing in their respective markets. Looking at a chart will quickly tell you how much a company has grown over the past 1, 5 or even 10 years. This one shows the performance of Samsung. You can see more charts below. Who invests in the stock market
Tumblr media
Traditionally it was only wealthy people that knew how the stock market worked or even how to get involved in it. This was due to the fact that they were often business partners or worked in certain industries where they shared financial knowledge among themselves because it usually meant they would get new investors in their companies or companies they wanted to do well. This could be quite simply because they were already invested in them.   Today there are people from all walks of life that are invested in the various stock markets around the world. From Financial PhD professors such as our very own black finance professor Dr Boyce Watkins, to children who have been shown the value of not just buying Nike trainers but owning a piece of the company and receiving money from the company instead of just giving the company theirs or their parents money! Why have black people not invested in the stock markets? That is a great question. Here is an easy to understand answer. We didn't know how it worked or how to get involved. Then when we did find out about it, we shunned the idea of parting with money that we could keep in our pockets. The problem with that is we would eventually spend the money and often have little or nothing to show for what we had bought. Also we tend to buy LIABILITIES instead of ASSETS. What is the difference between an asset and a liability? An asset is something that once owned, brings you more of something. Example: You own a car and use it as a taxi. As long as you are operating that taxi and it is making more money for you than you are spending on it, it's an asset. A liability is something that you own that continually decreases your wealth. Example: You've wanted a brand new BMW for years, eventually you save up enough money to buy one. You feel good, everyone compliments you on your new purchase, your social life improves, BUT, you now have a £200 a month payment to make to the car dealership. The BMW might look and drive great, however, it is making you no money, IT IS ONLY COSTING YOU!! You just bought a major liability. Why should black people invest? As time passes black people are becoming wealthier, more educated and much more business minded. We are currently enjoying an economic boom in the black community. How do we know? Look at how much each black family or person is spending. In order to spend, you have to have the money in the first place. We are much better off financially that ever before. BUT our spending habits have become awful. Do you know how much we spend on some of the most ridiculous unnecessary purchases? Fake hair, fake nails, expensive cars, alcohol and drugs including weed?!! £50 / $75 trainers sneakers for our children that they grow out of in 3 or 4 months. Clothes that we wear once or never. I'm not saying don't buy expensive things, often expensive things are worth their value, especially when buying 1 costly item that will last for years and can become a family heirloom, can be given away when no longer needed or can actually increase in value as time passes, as many antiques have proven to do. As previously stated, many of us are now enjoying an economic boom and our spending power has increased. What should we do with the money? The basic 4 things to do are: Give to charity. This is a great thing to do as helping others less fortunate than ourselves is simply about making the world a better place for everyone and according to the law of abundance when you give it keeps the flow of positive energy flowing in your direction too. Spend. This is also known as dead money. Obviously there are things that need to be bought such as food and bills have to be paid. But spending on things we don't need is simply a waste of  money. Save. Yes, saving money is a great idea because there are sometimes emergencies that require immediately available funds or maybe things we will need to buy in the future that might cost more than we have available right now. Putting that money aside for another day until we have saved enough to make that purchase is smart. BUT and it's a GREAT BIG BUT many of us don't realise the simple economics of saving and inflation. If you save £1000 or $1000 or whatever your chosen currency, the bank will use your money and then make a handsome profit from it's investment. They will make as much as possible from it and then give you back as little as 1.5% to 5% over the course of 1 year. That means you have made £15 to £50 or $15 to $50 profit over 1 year. Remember - you saved your money with, which actually is the same as YOU loaned / lent £1000 / $1000 to a multi billion or multi million $ / £ company, and they only gave you back £15 to £50 or $15 to $50 profit for a YEAR ! That is not very much profit at all. PLEASE remind yourself how much they charge YOU for loans or even going overdrawn without their permission !! Now let's briefly discuss inflation / the cost of living. Most everyday purchases go up in price. In a normal year your shopping costs will increase anything from 7% to 22% or more depending where you live in the world. Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewdepietro/2017/12/28/cost-of-living-is-surging-in-these-major-cities-and-what-it-could-mean-for-2018/#3d5359a471c6 So what does that have to do with your savings? If your savings are only increasing in value 1.5% to 5% per year and the cost of living is rising even as little as 7% per year, your saved money is actually DECREASING IN VALUE. What your money could buy for £100 / $100 last year will now cost you at least £107 / $107 this year. And the same thing happens every year. After 10 years your £100/$100 could be worth as little as or will buy you the same as £30 / $30 would buy you this year. That's why saving is NOT always a good idea. Invest. This is the best option. Investing means you put your money into something and expect to see a return on your money. Unlike saving with a bank, you expect higher returns. People often think of investing as risky and they are right. However, most people think that when you are saving with a bank, you are actually investing with a 'guaranteed' return. The reality is that no-one can predict that their bank will be in business at the end of any year. Likewise when you invest in a company's stock you are not guaranteed that your investment will increase or that the company will still be trading in a years time. If we look at the companies that we spend money with everyday or every week, we will begin to see a pattern. These companies have often been around for many years, and their share prices have steadily increased and they have sometimes become household names. It's quite easy to pick good stocks / shares to invest in. Again just look at the companies you spend money with every day. Another good idea is to buy the stock / shares of your bank instead of just settling for a low return on your savings. Think about this, they are experts at investing, their organisations make MILLILIONS / BILLIONS every year and they give you a tiny fraction of their profits. They don't have to satisfy you because you don't know how the game works. You lend them your money for almost 0% interest ! But their shareholders and stockholders have to be taken seriously by the banks. These people often make their decision based on the banks performance. The banks HAVE TO PERFORM WELL FINANCIALLY to satisfy their investors or the investors will take their money / investment and put into a competing bank and then that bank will be able to perform better. Other ways to choose good companies to invest in are: Ask your family, friends and colleagues which companies they regularly buy from. Research the companies whose clothes and footwear are worn by you, your family and the people who you know. Investigate the financial performance of the manufacturer of your car, your friends cars or your favourite cars. Research some of your favourite food chains' financial performance. Additionally you can even consider creating an investment agreement with a black owned business that you like. Why not go even further with the above idea and research some black owned companies in black led countries such as Jamaica, Ghana, Barbados, Liberia or Nigeria? Remember, we can only become a strong economic force if we are circulating our money amongst ourselves. If we are not doing this we are helping other races become wealthy through our efforts. Armed with that knowledge, how can we complain if we feel oppressed financially, when it's our own doing because we keep giving other races the tools to financially oppress us, i.e. our effort, energy, time and money!! Here are some charts of the performance of the share prices of some popular companies and banks:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You will notice that most of these companies featured are not black owned or operated, at their leadership level, but we do have a choice on their relationship with OUR MONEY. Spend our money with them and get products that give LITTLE OR NO FINANCIAL RETURN, or we can invest in them and use the money we earn from our investments to buy from them. That way, WE ARE USING THEIR MONEY TO BUY THEIR OWN PRODUCTS FOR OURSELVES. Good deal? When we have earned enough income from our investments we can put our own companies on the existing stock markets or......... Why don't we create our own? Coming soon..... Black Sterling: The Proven Path to Escape Systemic Racism and Subjugation, And Operate in an Alternative Economic System.   Click Here To Buy. Introduction to 'Black Sterling' by Khadijah Ward. “Black people must do for self or suffer the consequences.” — Elijah Muhammed. Elijah Muhammed’s statement is simple yet powerful. He was basically stating that if you, black people, are not self-reliant, but dependent upon the systems of others, you will be subject to an oppressive existence with negative outcomes. The situation of the black people today, is evidence that we as a people, are not in control of our own community, neither are we responsible for our economic condition, and as a result as a nation you are suffering. As a nation we do not own property, resources or institutions. We are dependent upon euro-centric infrastructures, and systems for all of our basic human needs, to include; housing, education, jobs and financial attainment. These systems upon which you and I rely, execute oppression, injustice, inequality, indignity, brutality, poverty, and even death for some of you or your loved ones. They oppress you to limit your social organisation, financial success and freedom as a nation. Since the days of slavery, your life has been controlled through systems by rich and powerful men, that do not look like you. You are their commodities, the source for their wealth. Essentially you are modern day slaves. Read the full article

Black Children And Technology In The 21st Century
Tumblr media
Black Children And Technology In The 21st Century Black Children And Technology Part 2 Recently a friend and I had a discussion regarding what initially appeared to be a very straightforward subject which led to something that has not been explored enough recently, Black children and technology in the 21st century. Smart Phones and Social Media And How They Impact Black Children And Technology In The 21st Century The background story. A friend of mine recently witnessed a fight between two elderly men. While he and another tried to stop the fight, others just watched, made jokes, encouraged the two men to continue fighting and some stood by and filmed the fight with their smartphones with the intention to later post the top-selling, blockbuster movie of the year (joke) onto social media. My friend commented that filming a fight in the street and posting it onto social media could not have happened 10 years ago. I thought and said "YES IT COULD". He disagreed and said "Maybe, you could have, but everyday people could not have". The implication there was that because I've been into technology and communications for a long time, only people that were into that 10 years ago were the only people who could have done that. The discussion went on for some time and I decided to find some evidence and proof that supported my views that everyday people had the ability and equipment and the global infrastructure was in place for a video to be filmed from a smartphone and be posted onto social media back in 2008. If you would like more information on technology courses for your children or yourself THAT CAN TURN INTO A HIGHLY PAID CAREER have a look at: Cyber Security, Ethical Hacking And Penetration Testing Computer Programming For Children Robotics For Children This article was born from that discussion as I thought of how many people simply abuse or waste the technology that is already in our hands and I also realised that we as a race are still overlooking the potentially highly successful future that stands ahead of us if we choose to nurture our children towards building, creating with and overstanding, the new technologies that are available today. I've added some interesting facts that show why it's parent article Black Children And Technology and this update "Black Children and Technology In The 21st Century" are subjects that we have to look at VERY SERIOUSLY......... By the year 2000 AD smartphones were already available and Social Media in it's modern guise had been around since the early 1990's. Not everyone realises that the modern meaning of "Social Media" actually includes any form of digitally based communication that is easily accessible and can be interacted with, by a large number of people, who can share various forms of media including text, pictures, video and voice. Today this includes email, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Telegram, WhatsApp, etc. Older popular platforms included MySpace, MSN / Windows Messenger, ICQ, AOL Messenger, etc. Because of the cost of smartphones in the early part of the 2000's, not many people could afford them. So most of the users were business executives or other people within organisations who generally were in need of such advanced technology so the devices were often paid for by their companies. But by the mid 2000's they had become affordable to a large number of people around the world. Some of the manufacturers included HTC, Palm, HP, RIM / Blackberry, Dell, Nokia and Ericsson. This picture is of the 2008 - “G1 with Google”, which featured many Google applications, including Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube and GTal

k. It was also integrated with the Amazon MP3 store, allowing users to easily buy digital music, and featured the Android store where users can browse and buy new applications. Source: Macworld.com Now if we consider the fact that when these phones were being released some of the youngsters today were babies or not even born. However they are the ones who have mastered the technology and many of us, whether we are new to technology or are veterans, are being taught by them. Here at EbonyDirectory.com we often ask the youths in our communities how they use technology and what they would like to see technology be able to do in the future. Their answers are often very educational. Social Media has been a vital tool to many of us, as have our smartphones. The young people of today have not been immune from this, in fact they are the ones who have embraced these technologies more than adults and the young spend ALOT of time using their smartphones. Many people think this is to the detriment of their health and education among other things. However, we cannot ignore the fact that they are MASTERS of this new technology and their mastery has come about through hours, days, weeks, months, years of hands-on, often self-taught, practice and study. We really ought to give them much credit for what they have learned and are continuing to learn. As we are fully aware, the combination of smart phones and social media can create a dangerous environment, so we must protect our youth at all times. But are we also putting that same amount of energy into encouraging them to hone their skills with their iPhones and Androids as much as we encourage them to do maths, languages, geography, history and the sciences?

Black children featuring in information technology news articles is becoming more and more commonplace everyday. Now that there is even more information available on the internet on how well black children are advancing with the new technology in the computer world, this proves that we must support them and encourage them at every opportunity. Have a look at these examples: Karabo Matlali has been learning how to code since she was six years old.

As Whitney Houston sang 'Don't you know the children are the future, teach them right and let them lead the way......' Please watch this short video from BlackGirlsCode.com with Kimberly Bryant who was invited by Oprah Winfrey to receive a standing ovation for her commitment, hard work and outstanding efforts to assist young black girls and boys to learn to master technology. She is a great example to us all as she shows us what TRUE encouragement is. Could The Fictional Country Of Wakanda In The Movie "Black Panther" Be A Representation Of What We Can Expect As A Result Of Nurturing Black Children And Technology In The 21st Century? Many people have seen this movie and have passed their own judgements on it, good or bad. Without getting into the politics of the film, one thing that cannot be denied is that at least one person, somewhere on this planet can see a glimpse of how the black race could be living in harmony with our environment and with technology if we collectively and responsibly, harness the power and opportunities that technology has made available. If you haven't seen the movie and if you are interested in black children and technology in the 21st century, the movie Black Panther is a must. Regardless of anyone's opinion of the movie the fact remains that as a race we can, with the help of the children, become world leaders in this rapidly evolving world that has many of it's advancements rooted in technology. Think of what Steve Jobs achieved as 1 man with a vision. I've used him as an example as he is someone whom most of us are familiar with. And if we are not, then we almost certainly all are familiar with his iProducts. He was able to have a vision of how technology could be used and how it could be advanced without the worlds permission. We need to adopt that same mentality and give our children a chance to realise their hopes, dreams, aspirations and goals WITH our support and guidance. Imagine how different this world could be if we owned and led companies like Apple. Imagine what an impact we could have on this world and planet if collectively we could build companies that impact peoples lives and thinking the way Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and Google do. Black Women In Science And Technology
Tumblr media
Can black women in science and technology help create a better world? What do you really know about black women in science and technology? Although we have always been taught how most scientific and technological advancements have been made by other than the black race, that is not true. We often hear how males have created a lot of these advancements too. But what about the involvement of black women in science and technology? Have black women contributed anything is these areas? Let's explore this.
Tumblr media
Sarah Boone. Inventor Have you ever heard of Sarah Boone ? In 1891 she invented an improvement for the ironing board which made the ironing of ladies garments easier.   You have probably heard of CCTV (Closed Circuit TeleVision). If you haven't it is a viewing and or recording system that uses cameras to watch specific areas without the need for a human being to be physically present in that area.
Tumblr media
Marie Van Britten-Brown Inventor Of CCTV You probably didn't know that the original CCTV was created by a black woman! Marie Van Brittan Brown. That's correct! All those cameras that are all over the world providing security, and ensuring peoples' safety was invented by a fairly unknown black woman. This is why it is important for us to share this type of information. It is up to us to be aware of and celebrate who we are and our achievements. The global contributions of black women in science and technology is a huge vault of knowledge and encouragement that everyone should research and look into. Following are a few more examples of these wonderful people.........
Tumblr media
Marie M. Daly Ph.D Chemist And Scientist Marie M. Daly was the first black woman in the United States to receive a Ph.D in Chemistry in 1947. Among her many achievements, her passion for science contributed hugely towards the studies and understanding of hypertension and the relationship between cholesterol and clogged arteries.   Another great black woman involved in science and technology is Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut to travel in space in 1992 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. She graduated in 1977 receiving a B.Sc (Bachelor of Science degree) in chemical engineering.
Tumblr media
Mae Jemison M.D. This brave woman defied the odds and successfully completed the astronaut training program at NASA. These are a few of the large number of black women in science and technology, our unsung heroines who have all contributed to the advancements of the black race. Many of the young black girls and boys would do well to research these real life stories to see how capable these people were and are. Too often nowadays young black people and black people in general are encouraged by the media to get involved with the music industry, sports and acting while forgetting that we can and do excel in any area we choose to be involved in. These wonderful women are an example to all of us as they show and prove that we can be world leaders in any field we choose. Further lists of black female inventors and leaders in the science and technology fields can be found HERE, HERE and HERE. Please comment on and share this article so we can all learn and become aware of the efforts and achievements of black women in science and technology. #ebonydirectory Read the full article

Black Children And Technology
Tumblr media
Are Black Children And Technology A Suitable Match ? Does the topic of black children and technology even need to be discussed? In today's society there is an inescapable and silent partner. Technology.
Tumblr media
Black Children And Technology Everywhere we go - it's there. An unseen and silent force that we cannot avoid or escape. From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep. In some ways it is a great ally and in other ways an unforgiving foe. Even when we don't realise it, technology is around us everywhere everyday. Even in the furthest parts of the world, technology is present and often giving us insights into parts of the world we did not even know existed. A few examples of technology most of us don't know about or did not know had already been invented: Cars that use water as fuel Thought controlled prosthetics (artificial limbs) Cars that drive themselves Surgical operations performed with the surgeon hundreds of miles away from the patient With all of these advancements being made in those few examples, think of all of the other areas where technological advancements are being made: Food Industry Farming and agriculture Housing and construction Space exploration Energy And there are many more. How will the black race participate in these advancements ? Will we be leaders, co-leaders or followers - or not included ? These are decisions that we make every day - accept it or not. If we begin or continue to acknowledge that black children and technology will help us achieve some of our aims and goals as a race then we will be better poised to face whatever the future brings us. Historically we have been at the forefront of achievements; before and during what in Europe was classed as the 'dark ages' or 'medieval' times we flourished in terms of the technology we had. Even up to now we are still making great leaps forward not just as individuals but as a race. There are reports available that indicate that technology is creating a generation of children who will not be able to interact socially with society because they are always on their smartphones, tablets computers or other computerised devices. Also there are people who think that children will have reduced speech capabilities, spelling capabilities or even writing and mathematical problem solving abilities. And it is true that if a device can do all of those things for you then you don't have to learn to do them yourself as you can rely on a device to do it for you. To an extent there are negative aspects of technology that do need to be addressed. There are also the positive aspects that do need to be thought of too. Black children and technology is a topic that we need to explore and encourage with an open and reasoning mind set. Yes there are problems that can arise through technology. There are also an infinite number of positive possibilities that become available too. For many years the Internet has to an extent 'leveled the playing field' in terms of how business is conducted on a global level. An idea can now be shared, reviewed, invested in or even sold in a matter of minutes. There are already many people who have personal experiences that black children and technology can make a positive impact in our world. For example Osine and Anesi, two young black teenagers who used their skills to build an Internet browser 'Crocodile Browser Lite' to match that of Googles' Chrome, Mozilla's Fire Fox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer !

Kimberly Bryant is the founder of Black Girls Code, a nonprofit that teaches coding to girls from underrepresented communities. Image: Black Girls Code And Kimberley Bryant Founder of BlackGirlsCode.com an organisation that teaches girls how to become a computer programmer, a potentially VERY well paid skill. It is a fact some computer programmers earn over £300 / US$434 per day for their work. This earning potential can also be said for various roles that exist within the IT industry. Black children and technology is new ground that we should embrace without hesitation, however with a rational mindset that protects while encourages discovery, determination and success. #ebonydirectory Read the full article

Do YOU Call Yourself Black ?Please Complete And Share The Survey
Tumblr media
'Do YOU Call Yourself Black ?' was a question that came up at EbonyDirectory.com as we were creating one of our pages, Black People And the Law Of Abundance. 'Should we even be using the term or generalisation BLACK ?' There are so many opinions within our diverse community on this subject. We think it's a very interesting topic to discuss. There are groups that will advocate 100% that we are black and will deny any other description. There are also groups at the other end who will give political and legal reasons why under no circumstances should we use the term black as a description for ourselves. So we thought let's ask everyone in our great and widespread community what they think about the question......
He or she has a business partner, who although not physically present in the market, contributes financially to start the business, keep the business going or helps the business grow with additional advice, specialist knowledge, financial or other input / investment. As an investor this business partner has the right to own a share or percentage of the business. Additionally he or she also has the right to enjoy profits from the business or a growth on any investment they have made towards the business. This is the same with stock market investments. You can buy some shares, which is the same as investing in a company. You are giving them more money to grow their business, and as the company grows, you will want the value of your shares grow and often receive what are called dividends.
Make a list of the companies you spend money with, then use this link to check how well they are performing in their respective markets. Looking at a chart will quickly tell you how much a company has grown over the past 1, 5 or even 10 years (see the charts below). Who invests in the stock market Traditionally it was only wealthy people that knew how the stock market worked or even how to get involved in it. This was due to the fact that they were often business partners or worked in certain industries where they shared financial knowledge among themselves because it usually meant they would get new investors in their companies or companies they wanted to do well. This could be quite simply because they were already invested in them.
Tumblr media
Today there are people from all walks of life that are invested in the various stock markets around the world. From Financial PhD professors such as our very own black finance professor Dr Boyce Watkins, to children who have been shown the value of not just buying Nike trainers but owning a piece of the company and receiving money from the company instead of just giving the company theirs or their parents money! Watch this short video of a 10 year old black girl who is already investing in the stock market: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E6RMfRDspU Why have black people not invested in the stock markets? The basic 3 things to do are: Spend. This is also known as dead money. Obviously there are things that need to be bought such as food and bills have to be paid. But spending on things we don't need is simply a waste of  money. Save. Yes, saving money is a great idea because there are things we will need to buy in the future that might cost more than we have available right now. That's £15 to £50 or $15 to $50 over 1 year! That is not very much at all. People often think as investing as risky and they are right. However, most people fail to see that when you are saving with a bank, you are actually investing with a 'guaranteed' return. These companies have been around for years, and their stock prices have steadily increased and they are also household names. It's quite easy to pick good stocks to invest in. Again just look at the companies you spend money with every day. Another good idea is to buy the stock of your bank instead of just settling for a low return on your savings. Think about this, they are experts at investing, their organisations make MILLILIONS / BILLIONS every year and they give you a tiny fraction of their profits. They don't have to satisfy you because you don't know how the game works. You lend them your money for almost 0% interest! Research the companies whose clothes and footwear worn by you and the people who you know. Here are some images of the performance of the share prices of some household name companies and banks:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You will notice that most of these companies featured are not black owned or operated at leadership level, but we have a choice. Financial Planning - Black Money 101
Tumblr media
Black Money 101 - Financial Planning The financial planning world is rapidly changing, and financial opportunities appear to be getting less with each passing day. However, the reality is that the individuals who comprehend and are wise enough to not be tempted by the various available spending distractions are the ones who are well on their way to outperforming the current economic situations, while the individuals who never figure out how the big picture is really being played out will wind up falling further and further behind.
Tumblr media
Black Money 101 is an incredible course from the team at The Black Business School which will lead you step by step along the pathway toward successful financial planning / monetary education and a comprehension of exactly how the rich became the rich, in today’s society where the wealth gap has become self-evident. Here’s how easily you can see the wealth gap. Are there a lot of unemployed people in your area? In your community are the majority of the cars new or old? (Many new cars in an area where the average salary is not very high could be an indication of a high debt level in the area). Are there many shops in your area selling expensive jewelry or clothes or other expensive things a person could just walk by the window and make an instant purchasing decision or decide to smash the window and steal the items?! If you look at a community not too far from you where there is obvious poverty points 1 & 2 above will be visible, but you will not see point 3. Now think of an area near you where people are obviously wealthy (you can usually tell by the property prices). Point 1 will not be obvious and point 2 might not be easy to tell. Point 3 is usually a tell tale sign of a wealthy area. They will have shops where expensive things are on display, simply because the people in that community DO spend their money on those items. Most of us are somewhere in the middle of the two above examples. Either way there is a wealth gap and it is widening. Which side of the gap you choose to be on is entirely your choice. Black Money 101 is an essential course for the individuals amongst you who may be curious about financial planning, wealth building and how to create inter-generational wealth and are searching for a place to start your mental shift to becoming wealthy. It is likewise a great course for those of us who have started their financial planning and wealth creation journey and are looking to hone their skills, sharpen their minds and make moves that will have a positive long term impact on their family. Small Business Financing For Black Businesses
Tumblr media
How To Get Small Business Financing For Black Businesses. Many new business startups claim that raising money is the most difficult part of starting a business. In fact, there are some segments of society where fundraising is so terribly difficult that businesses will either die due to a lack of financing, or they will never be born in the first place. Crowdfunding is your solution. By raising thousands of dollars from hundreds of people, you can obtain the kind of financial boost that no bank could ever give you. But the process is complex, full of landmines and most people never succeed. That's where we come in. 100% Naturally Organic, Hand Made Cocoa And Palm Oil Soap From Africa
Tumblr media
100% Naturally Organic, Hand Made Cocoa And Palm Oil Soap From Africa
Here is how I found a 100% Naturally Organic, Hand Made Cocoa And Palm Oil Soap. I thought I had found the soap of the century! 3 bars of soap for 46p in Morrisons, Leeds, West Yorkshire UK. The soap smelled nice. It lathered well and felt ok on my skin. I used it to bathe with and used a bar to wash my hands after using the bathroom.
Tumblr media
My friends and I often discuss our good purchases and, so I mentioned the soap to some of my friends and they tried it and they also gave it some positive comments. Obviously, a great purchase. A few months ago, I decided to have an extended vacation in Africa. I bought my ticket, got my visa and here I came. Before I came I packed some shower gel cos its beautiful and HOT in Africa. Therefore, showering regularly is necessary. And it’s not like showering in the UK. Mainly because there is no central heating, so the water flows at the same temperature that it is at its natural source. I am not a cold-shower or cold-bath person in the UK, if the water ain’t warm, get the kettle on and some pots on the stove because some hot or warm water is needed! Having said that, the water where I’m staying here in Africa is collected into a large on-site water tank where it is heated naturally by the sun, so the water is at an easily-bearable-slightly-below-luke-warm temperature. Which makes a nice brief change from the beautiful African heat. Since being here my shower gel has started to run out. Time to get some more. I asked the friendly helpful woman at a nearby shop for some African black soap. For those of you who don’t know African black soap, it’s a 100% naturally organic soap that is made and widely used here in Africa. It has gone on to become globally popular. She brought out a firm brown ball of………stuff! I’m thinking ‘No that must be for washing your clothes, she clearly doesn’t understand what I want’. So, I’ve asked again for African black soap and asked if the one she had handed me was for washing clothes. She pointed to some other soap which was yellow in colour and said, ‘no that is for clothes, this is for skin’. I examined the brown ball of stuff in my hand and asked what is it made of? Cocoa and palm oil.
Tumblr media
Ok, I thought that sounds great. What else? Nothing. What chemicals are in it? None. Are you sure? Yes. So, you’re telling me that this soap is 100% natural and is only made of cocoa and palm oil? Yes. I held the brown ball in my hand. It looked very natural in comparison to most of the other soaps available in the UK and slowly the feeling of ‘I HAVE TO TRY THIS SOAP!!’ came over me. I felt so eager to test the soap that I ran the 5 miles home and jumped in the shower. No, I didn’t. But I was very happy with my 100% naturally organic, hand-made find. After arriving home, the next opportunity I had, I got in the shower and ran the water. The first thing I noticed was again how natural the soap felt in my hand. The next thing I noticed was how quickly and easily it lathered. Plus, it felt good on my skin.
Tumblr media
After showering I dried myself and noticed that my skin felt clean, moisturised and comfortable. I began to smile. NOW THIS is the soap of the century! A little about me….. Over the years I have tried lots of different washing, showering and bathing products and as I’ve become older, wiser and more responsible, I’ve started to look for products that are great for my face, body, hair AND are good for the ENVIRONMENT too. Before I traveled over to Africa, my friend Janice who is a natural health advisor came to visit me and gave me some ‘friendly advice’ regarding the washing and bathing products in my bathroom. "Please get rid of them because they are full of crap and are very slowly poisoning you. Would you put these chemicals into your body?" She said. "No, so why put them onto your body?" She had a very good point!
Tumblr media
When I examined the labels of the products in my bathroom, I did not know what most of the ingredients were, but they were not natural. Even though the FRONT label said, 'Natural Extracts' or 'Made With Natural Ingredients' the REAR label said a whole lot more! For several years my friend Janice has been studying the effects of various chemicals that are used in our foods and body care products. Her findings are alarming to say the least. MOST of the products we put into our bodies and use on our bodies are just as harmful as the products we use to clean our homes! Because the quantity of the harmful chemicals that are used in our body care products is lower, the damage they do builds up over a longer period. The damage these unnatural products do can lead to brain disorders, mineral and vitamin deficiencies in our bodies, which can lead to eye, respiratory, skin, blood, digestive, bone and organ problems. Belief it or not, the prolonged use of many of these products can also contribute to diabetes and cancer as well as other sicknesses. Just imagine, all the waste water we empty down our sinks and bath tubs is full of these chemicals. Even if our countries have great water purification systems that don’t use chemicals that are harmful to the environment (which countries are those ??!!) some, if not all this now chemical waste is ending up in our seas, and oceans. It is then going into the fishes etc. which live in the seas and oceans. We then eat the fishes etc. and put the chemicals directly INTO our bodies!! Anyway…..over here in Africa I had used this 100% Naturally Organic, Hand Made Cocoa And Palm Oil Soap only once, and was already enthusiastic about it. I asked one of my friends, who is also from the UK and who is out here with me, to try the soap too. She loved it. She has been here for quite some time and had always seen the 100% Naturally Organic, Hand Made Cocoa And Palm Oil Soap around but had never tried it. Like me she had assumed it was soap for washing clothes! And surprisingly, her comments about it were the same as mine (and her comments were made without me telling her what I liked about the soap). She found the soap: Lathered quickly and very well Didn’t leave her skin feeling dry as some soaps do. Which was important for her as her skin is a little dry in areas. Now she says she will be buying some more. I think that this soap is too good to keep to myself. So, I am willing to share this hidden 100% Naturally Organic African treasure with you. Here are some great benefits that you will enjoy: A 100% Naturally Organic, Hand Made Cocoa And Palm Oil Soap, that has a rich creamy and bubbly lather. It moisturizes instead of dries your skin. The soap is naturally sourced without harming the environment.
Tumblr media
