Tbh I think vegans make a good ethical argument, I plan on becoming pescatarian precisely because I think their arguments are solid despite how they conflict with my previous worldview.
I just don't think that this *accomplishes* anything. It's purely for one's own moral purity, it doesn't actually materially effect anything else. It's like those people who abstain from voting dem because the dems are capitalist.
ngl the amount of time and effort vegans put into arguing with people over dietary choices (which have 0 impact on anyone but themselves) instead of devoting time to literally anything that could actually accomplish something is a little weird
like why do you make 5 vegan smugposts on reddit a day. there are still people who think that circumcision is normal and who have no concept of class consciousness. i just don't understand why veganism of all things is the hill people choose to die on.
kinda makes me think you value egojerking more than human life tbh

But it's true. The animal is already slaughtered before you eat it. Not only that, but there is 0 empirical evidence which even correlates decrease in meat production with vegan activism or population.

Why the media CEOs will always learn the wrong lessons
Yesterday a friend and I talked about how the entire (AAA) game industrie looked at BG3 being as popular as it is and going: "Oh, we need to produce 100+ hour games, I guess! Those sell!" Which... obviously is not why it is popular. The game is not popular because it has 100+ hours of gameplay, but because it has engaging characters, that are well-acted and that work as good hooks for the players. Like, let's face it: The reason why I so far have sunken 160 hours into this game is, because I wanna spend time with these characters - and because I wanna give them their happy endings.
But the same has happened too, just a bit earlier this year, right? When Barbie broke the 1 billion and every Hollywood CEO went: "Oh, so the people want movies based on toy franchises! Got it!" To which the internet at large replied: "... How is that the lesson you learned from this?"
Well, let me explain to you, why this is the lesson they learn: It is because the CEOs and the boards of directors at large are not artists or even engaged with the medium they produce. They mostly are economists. And their dry little hearts do not understand stuff more complex than numbers and spread sheets.
That sounds evil, I know, but... It is sadly the truth. When they look at a successful movie/series/game/book/comic, they look at it as a product, not a piece of art or narrative. It is just a product that has very clear metrics.
To them Barbie is not a movie with interesting stylistic choices that stand out from the majority of high budget action blockbusters. It is a toy movie with mildly feminist themes.
Or Oppenheimer is not a movie to them with a strong visual language and good acting direction. No, it is a historical blockbuster.
And this is true for basically every form of media. I mean, books are actually a fairly good example. In my life I do remember the big book fads that happened. When Harry Potter was a success, there was at least a dozen other "magical school" book series being released. When Twilight was a big success there was suddenly an endless number of "teen girl falls in love with bad boy, who is [magical creature]" YA. When the Hunger Games was a success, there were hundreds of "YA dystopia" books. Meanwhile in adult reading, we had the big "next Game of Throne" fad.
Of course, the irony is, that within each of those fads there might have been one or two somewhat successful series - but never even one that came even close to whatever started the fad.
Or with movies, we have seen it, too. When Avengers broke the 1 billion (which up to this point only few movies did) the studios went: "Ooooooh, so we need shared universe film series" - and then all went to try and fail to create their own cinematic universe.
Because the people, who call the shots, are just immensely desinterested in the thing they are selling. They do not really care about the content. All they care about is having a supposedly easy avenue of selling it. Just as they do not care about the consumer. All they care about is that the consumer buys it. Why he buys it... Well, they do not care. They could not care less, in fact.
So, yeah, get ready for a 20 overproduced games with a bloated 100+ hours of empty gameplay, but without the engaging characters. And for like at least 15 more moves based on some toy franchise, that nobody actually cares about.
And then get ready for all the CEOs to do the surprised Pikachu face, when all of that ends up not financially successful.
Really, I read some interviews yesterday from some AAA-studio CEOs and their blatant shock and missing understanding on why BG3 works for so many people.
Because, yeah... capitalism does not appreciate art. Capitalism does not understand art. It only understands spread sheets.

very true. i don't think people understand how dangerous it is to limit your experience with art to exclusively things designed for children.
like, atla will never be a substitute for come and see. she-ra is not a substitute for eyes without a face, or poor things, or who's afraid of virginia wolf.
steven universe will never be pan's labyrinth, or when the wind blows, or grave of the fireflies, or jojo rabbit.
for how hard people gas up the owl house, it will never portray trauma like fire walk with me does. it will never show the loss of personal identity like perfect blue or better call saul can.
children's media can be important. it can be groundbreaking. but it is still children's media, and it simply cannot exercise as much freedom with concept and execution as adult media can. i promise you, no children's media will make you feel the way twin peaks does.
and it's not even as if these people are FOCUSING on groundbreaking children's media. again, it's always ATLA or Owl House or Steven Universe or MHA. Not Persepolis, Coraline, Princess Mononoke, etc.
People treat art like a consumer product. Like its only purpose is to give you as much dopamine as possible. Is it any fucking wonder suits treat art the way they do when this is how WE treat it?
Just last year, we saw grown adults act like a fucking toy ad and a christopher nolan movie were peak cinema. and guess what? THAT SHIT HAD CONSEQUENCES! Now we're getting 100mil budget toy ads for the foreseeable future.
I mean no offense to kids TV Shows but full offense to Tumblr Users when I say that I fully believe the reason there's so many posts calling for there to more mature and unsanitized media and especially queer media is because tumblr users only watch media that's for fucking 12 year olds who are still developing their prefrontal cortexes.
Seriously think about it. What are the shows that constantly get discourse and big essays and thinkpieces on tumblr? It's often shows like She-ra, Steven Universe, Avatar and Legend of Korra, Owl House, Voltron and stuff like that. Media for kids is massive on here. Like I get it. I like Kids media, I really do, but you can't keep eating baby food well into your 20s then complain that babyfood doesn't taste good anymore.
I'm not trying to say that Kids media isn't real media or all queer media should be mature epics about war and death, I swear, but you can't keep eating babyfood and also complaining that it doesn't taste mature. Besides, 90% of the people here couldn't handle Hazbin Hotel. Y'all are not ready for any media more mature than that.

if you actually read capital, marx clearly defines the proletariat as the class of workers who do NOT own the means of production of their labor, and are exploited by the bourgeoisie.
"but independent artists don't necessarily exploit people! they can't be bourgeoisie!" there are more than 2 classes. independent artists are petit bourgeois.
I fucking hate this "capitalism is when you make money, the more money you make, the more capitalism it is" mindset people have gotten. No, an artist selling their own work is not them engaging in capitalism, it's literally a worker owning their own means of production.
Remember capitalism is someone profiting off of someone else's labor though owning capital. It is not simply the act of profiting at all.

i know that folks from the west are not easily giving into support for palestine because “well israeli civilians dont deserve to die, stop being a dick by cheering for this”
and listen. we understand that very well. we cannot cheer for innocent people losing their lives. but we wouldnt BE here today if this were something that could have been sorted out over a negotiation
netanyahu just last week, w a disgusting ass smug face made it clear at the UN GA that he was redrawing the map of the middle east. he was literally there with a board and a marker pen, shamelessly redrawing a map of israel over palestine. people fucking clapped. there is video footage, goo look at it.
and that’s just what the west is seeing. what the west has been conveniently ignoring, or worse, supporting, is the apartheid in palestine for the past 100 years. what is happening in israel today, theyve been doing exactly that and Worse for a century in palestine.
any both sides argument misses the fucking point because it ignores a whole history of how theyve fucked over the palestinian people. not just outright killing their people but also stealing land and resources and redirecting them to the israeli cause.
but the west doesn’t actually give a fuck about arab countries or its people, in fact actively funds genocide. so eat your shitass opinion about not celebrating the one time palestinians have managed to look like a threat.
as hopeful as we are, we know israel is too powerful and has the west as its ally. but this is what palestinian journalist had to say about it “they have decided to fight and die on their feet, rather than just die on their knees”
another journalist reporting from gaza said “well the people in gaza are used to airstrikes of this kind so they have a standard protocol on how to evacuate and know when to give up, and go down together as a family”
let the enormity of those statements sink in, and then maybe you can fucking talk about both sides.

If you’re tempted to say “it’s ok for Palestine to defend itself but it shouldn’t attack innocent civilians, that’s terrorism”, you need to understand that your statement is US imperialist propaganda and you are not the progressive that your tumblr account seems to convince you you are.
There has never been a war or conflict in human history that did not involve harm to civilians. The US and it’s allies however created this idea that warfare can be conducted “the right way”, trying to create this intellectual divide between war as a concept and violence against civilians as a concept. It then proceeded to commit some of the most horrific acts of violence against civilians in human history (the Vietnam War, the Korean War, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, everything in the Middle East), with incredibly high death tolls against innocent civilians.
When it comes to international diplomacy, which states conduct war “nicely” and which states do so terroristically is often determined by what the US wants you to think. The US invading multiple foreign countries is portrayed as righteous and their war crimes are accidental. Palestine defending itself against a genocidal state like Israel is considered wrong, and any of its war crimes are terrorism. The US intentionally created this conceptual divide between “correct” and “incorrect” warfare not because a difference logically exists (innocent people being killed is inherent to all conflict) but as a propaganda tactic.
If you’re a young person who sees yourself as a progressive but says “oh Palestine is so bad for involving civilians”, you should probably pick up a history book and find out how apartheid was ended in South Africa. Spoiler alert: Nelson and Winnie Mandela were “terrorists” who committed numerous targeted acts of violence against civilians. The US and UK voted against financial sanctions against apartheid South Africa in the UN general assembly because South Africa at the time was somewhere both states had financial interests and they preferred it remain as it was, a genocidal state.
Killing innocent people is morally wrong. But it is conservative propaganda to imply that any form of warfare is morally right. There is no form of war that has ever avoided civilian involvement, the US simply wants you to believe so in order to excuse its own behaviour historically. War has always resulted in innocent casualties, because war is horrific regardless of who is involved.
Considering that genocidal apartheid states have always resulted in resistance groups being forced to commit “terrorism” (Palestine, Ireland, South Africa), if Israel has an issue with what’s currently occurring, the first step would be to stop committing genocide. It’s actually incredibly easy to not have small resistance groups attacking you if you do not constantly create the conditions in which those groups are forced to exist to defend their right to life.

is this not terrorism in your eyes?
as an ukrainian, I personally fully support State of Israel.
There is no "good terrorism". And never was.
Hamas should be destroyed. No exceptions.
Palestinians can go fuck yourself with this kind of actions.

A religious extremist terrorist group deciding that today is the day to do a murder suicide situation with an entire population of oppressed people is not the #progressive revolution that you guys think it is. Despite what your tiktok algorithm is showing you actual news reports and ground footage is showing 90% of Palestinians are freaking the fuck out because Hamas just gave Netanyahu the excuse he's been waiting for to commit genocide.
This is not going to end well for the Palestinians and Hamas has no right to decide for everyone that their physical safety isn't important anymore. Anyone who sees this as anything but a tragedy needs to realize that real world geopolitics do not fucking work like a YA novel revolution.

As a leftist Jew who believes strongly in the cause of dignity and freedom for the Palestinian people, and that Israel has abused them, I am begging fellow leftists to understand that real life is not a comic book. A government being “the bad guy” in a situation does not automatically make anyone who opposes it “the good guy”.
Hamas denies the Holocaust. Hamas disseminates the Protocols of the Elders of Zion—the conspiracy theory it paints is what they mean by “Zionist”. Hamas forbids foreign aid educators from teaching human rights to Palestinians, and claims that even teaching that the Holocaust happened is a war crime. Hamas has written the aim of annihilating Israel (the country and its people) into its charter—the mass slaughter and violent expulsion of 7 million Jews from the land is written into its laws.
There is no crime any state could ever do that would justify any of that; there is no act of state repression that could ever make it acceptable to side with the organization spreading Nazi pamphlets and Holocaust denial.
Oppose Bibi Netanyahu. Oppose Israel’s far-right, authoritarian government. Oppose its apartheid policies. Oppose its violent abuse of the Palestinian people. That isn’t antisemitic. But Hamas is—verifiably, beyond a shadow of a doubt, to its core—antisemitic. Its portrayal of Israeli Jews as blood-thirsty, child-killing master manipulators that control international media and finance is antisemitic. Its insistence that Palestinian freedom necessitates the death & expulsion of Jews from the land is antisemitic. Its redefinition of “Zionism” as a pejorative to mean genocidal Jewish/Israeli Supremacy is antisemitic.
Supporting the Palestinian people in their plight is a noble and loving goal; please never stop that. But do not let Hamas co-opt that into excusing or denying their rampant antisemitism and war crimes.
