Richard Coles jokes that he and Jimmy were aiming to 'take down the thatcher government with gay covers of 70s disco hits' (paraphrasing) but yeah no genuinely: them doing this and making these videos and being very loudly and visibly OUT was huge and very much a political statement. Even within queer culture itself they were somewhat revolutionary, with gay culture and lesbian culture having been quite separate from each other, the communards absolutely made a statement by being a gay duo who featured, celebrated, uplifted and partied with women

Savage Garden - Gunning Down Romance 1999

Savage Garden was an Australian pop duo consisting of Darren Hayes on vocals and Daniel Jones on guitar, keyboards, and vocals. They formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1993, and achieved international success with their number 1 hit singles "I Want You", "To the Moon and Back" (both 1996), "Truly Madly Deeply" (1997), and "I Knew I Loved You" (1999). The group won a record number of ten ARIA Music Awards in 1997 for their debut album and its related singles.

Affirmation was their second and final studio album, released on 1 November 1999. Much of the lyrics for the album dealt with Hayes' divorce. It won the 2000 ARIA Music Award for Highest Selling Album. It was nominated for Best Group and Best Pop Release. Including sales of the re-issue, the album has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, being certified platinum in a number of countries. Savage Garden disbanded at the end of 2001 with Hayes continuing as a solo artist and Jones moving into record production before becoming a real estate agent.
