a lot of the people calling keisha toxic i feel, didn’t watch the show through the lense of a 17 year old girl. yes keisha hurt justin but her actions were not malicious. she did not actively set out to hurt him. in her mind she was doing what was expected of her. her mother did not provide a safe space for her to come forward with the christian situation. shelly even admits it. everyone around her was pushing christian on her despite keisha’s visible discomfort whenever he was around or brought up.

keisha simply was navigating how most teenagers do. she felt she had to protect her mother, not the other way around. so she grinned and bared all of the bs. her biggest fear was hurting her mother. you guys forget justin’s, parents although dawn was firm, were a safe space for him. they allowed him to express himself emotionally. eric was consistently reminding justin to feel his emotions and to not run away from them. keisha didn’t receive that, im not saying shelly was a bad mother but she was emotionally absent. those of you saying you would’ve told your mother, you may have had a more emotionally safe relationship with her.

keisha is just a young teenage girl, feeling like she has to grow up quickly. with a father that comes and goes, an emotionally absent mother. she truly was sorta raising herself. she watched shelly internalize her emotions and figured that that’s what she’s supposed to do.

you guys throw around the word toxic to freely. it’s frustrating. keisha is complex and flawed but she’s not toxic. do i agree with how she handled things? no. but i understand because if i was her i would’ve rationalized and felt like those were the right things to do as well. most teenagers would. the whole she could’ve handled it better is easier said than done when you’re watching with adult eyes and a mature mindset.

i’ve noticed that nobody truly knows what enemies to lovers are anymore. they THINK they do. but they don’t. a lot of the time i’ve noticed people calling a ship with the two people competing against one another or mild miscommunication when they were younger enemies to lovers. when it’s RIVALS to lovers, and that’s completely okay. but we aren’t about to rewrite the definition of what ENEMIES to lovers is.

rivals to lovers is a sub genre of enemies to lovers but enemies to lovers is not a sub genre of rivals to lovers. they are not interchangeable. certain boxes have to be ticked off for it to enter enemies otherwise it’s just rivals. rivals ≠ enemies. rivals is usually competitive, trying to outdo one another. usually with petty disagreements and arguments. never any violence. and no true hate in the actions. dislike, yes. annoyance, yes. hate? no.

with a true enemies to lovers dynamic they have to have moments where they are actively putting the other in danger. that’s not debatable. they truly hate one another and have no regard for the others life. there will be moments where they’ll spare them, or hell even save them. but the element of danger and harm is important. during the time of them trying to harm one another there’s a tension a chemistry. like only they know how to push and pull one another. until the tension builds and they inevitably hookup.

but again, the element of harm has to be involved with a ETL otherwise you’re thinking of RTL and that’s okay. but let’s not use ETL interchangeably because you can’t. ETL is not necessarily healthy and a lot of the time i’ve noticed because it’s not healthy you don’t call a perfectly good example of ETL not ETL. a lot of yall don’t like ETL like you say you do. you like RTL.

i can name one ship in particular that’s a good example of ETL but is labeled as toxic and evil. it’s not supposed to be healthy. it’s literally founded on the sexual chemistry of the two characters trying to kill one another. it’s a taboo type of dynamic. you think you like the dynamic until it’s perfectly presented.

i tried to venture out and try other ships besides rina. but that backfired, joshua taylor bassett is the only man that’s not a complete weirdo off camera. he’s the correct and only choice across the board. i tried with the spring i cut my hair and on the show the endgame ship, the man mistreats her and can’t communicate properly. and off camera the rival ship, the one with better chemistry, that man is a complete sexist antivax weirdo. so back to the alphabet show i go. with respectable people on and off screen. rina you are a gem. other ships can’t compete where they don’t compare.

the fact that not only did they throw away otis’ development again. but they had him mistreat ruby again. had ruby lose her friends and had her lose her friendship with otis, yeah no. this season was horrible. what the actual fuck is up with the writers? and i’ve gathered all this info from spoilers because i wanted to know if i was getting my endgame or at least a happy ruby. i’m getting neither. yeah this show can fuck all the way off. still gonna need some rotis fanfics to fix this mess though.

found a new disney ship, this one is gay. the dynamic between them is far from just friends. wish disney would make it cannon cause the actresses ship it. hartley and amy are truly sunshine x grumpy trope. amy is definitely a lesbian and hartley is bi. the way they care for one another can’t just be written off as bffs. plus the show is hilarious, originally i made fun of it. but it makes me feel like i’m eleven again and i love it. hartmy has my heart. honorable mention is jake x starling.

getting to s4 of the oc, and i don’t understand the ryan x taylor hate. i think they’re truly a beautiful couple. ryan is not as stressed as he was with marissa. people love ryan and marissa together for nostalgia. but fail to truly admit that marissa was consistently spiraling and pulling ryan into that chaos. that was not a healthy dynamic at all.

seeing taylor and ryan together, it’s like seeing ryan finally breathe. ryan appreciates all her quirks and oddities and finds them endearing. taylor recognizes that his emotions were never put first and does that. she allows him to feel what he needs without judgement. ryan recognizes taylor’s needs and actively tries to meet them. they listen to one another and BOTH of them put the other first. nothing will ever make me not support them.

saw someone on tiktok say that gina was cruel for introducing ricky to her mother as a friend. let’s unpack that shall we? while i do not necessarily condone her introduction of ricky to terri, i understand. gina has been in love with ricky since thanksgiving of last year. during that time frame ricky consistently rejected his budding feelings for her. due to his fear of change, now i’m not negating his fear. i understand it. but in doing so he was harming gina. be it, unintentional, he still hurt her. each time she began to think he was starting to accept his feelings/return her feelings he brought up nini or was with nini. or made a mockery of them i.e the whole chocolate fiasco.

though not voiced, it of course when ricky finally acknowledges his feelings for gina it could feel like a dream for her. because this is what she’s been waiting on for a year. so it’s completely reasonable that she’d not completely ready to unveil that he’s her boyfriend to her mother. the same mother that she called when the heartbreak of his rejection. the same mother that watched her bawl her eyes out about him. (terri is no saint but at the end of the day she’s seen her daughter in immense pain due to her “unrequited” crush on ricky.).

leading to my second point, terri may be a godawful mother. but she’s still gina’s mother, and gina STILL wants her mothers approval to some extent. despite how we as a fandom may feel she does care about her mothers opinion to some extent. so when gina completely shuts out their relationship to terri, it’s because she knows her mother may have some preconceived notions about ricky. gina truly didn’t want to tell her mother until she herself was sure ricky wouldn’t run and ricky knew within himself he wouldn’t run.

during ep 5 of season 4 we see how ricky feels that he never thought he’d ever get gina. that once he finally accepted his feelings he never thought she could possibly return them. in that exact same aspect gina did not think ricky truly would return hers. she was hopeful but she wasn’t sure. she knew he had feelings for her but she also knows ricky has a track record of running. to her she needed this relationship to not be some dream. she needed proof he’d stay and fight for her. him showing up at the end of ep 5 proved to her that he WOULD fight. that he is willing to fight for her. for them.

in the end she ultimately told terri about their relationship because although gina to some extent cares about terri’s opinion, her frustration in that moment with the ricky disagreement and her mother actively trying to pair her and mack together is what pushed her to finally just tell her mother about them.

my point is, both ricky and gina had insecurities going into this relationship with one another. it was handled beautifully by both. but gina’s isn’t as clearly and explicitly talked about as ricky’s. they both felt that the other could never reciprocate and they both were scared to lose the other. what we aren’t gonna do is villainize either of them for making mistakes. plus to me ricky bowen and gina porter can do no wrong.

i feel like i’m gonna get hate for this, but ship who you want. i just personally don’t think every character should be queer. nor do i feel like every character should be straight. a healthy balance. too many queer characters feels like forced rep, too little feels icky.

my annoyance is the fact that, a lot of the time these ships aren’t sprouted from genuine chemistry and storyline. it is ships created solely because people a. hate person 1 in the pairing. or b. they are rooting for a pair to return back to their incompatible ex. but when it doesn’t seem plausible suddenly this character is queer.

i am all for queer representation, BUT i would rather it be from a place of sincerity and not malice. don’t make a character queer to fit your agenda. just like when people erase a characters queer identity to pair them with someone else, it feels icky. also feels like you’re doing a disservice to the characters.

ship who you want but don’t erase a characters identity.

the ricky x mack shippers are just pws that don’t want ricky with gina. ship who you want but i’m mildly annoyed that when i’m specifically on a rina tag on ao3 that ship popped up. personally it’s as annoying as the “gini” tag. both of them are jump scares.

with sex education making a come back i can now try and turn my attention to ruby and otis. though i doubt they’ll be endgame even though they have more chemistry and balance one another out better than maeve and otis. they’ve dragged that ship out for so long that i no longer care for it. plus they didn’t even speak again until late season 3. i have no issue with plot device ships but the fact that you paired a couple together (ruby, otis) and they have more chemistry than your main ship. is my issue. it also showed that otis and maeve truly bring out the worst in one another. whereas with ruby and otis, otis is more confident in himself and makes time for his friends outside of his relationship. ruby, is a bitch that’s her character. but with otis she’s more vulnerable, softer. ruby truly respects his boundaries and doesn’t push him to do things he does not want to do. otis allows ruby to be vulnerable. to let down her walls. ruby allows otis to be confident within himself. and i don’t want to hear the whole spiel of “she tried to get him to change his clothes.” she asked him once he did it and then stated he was uncomfortable and after that she no longer brought it up and let him wear what he wanted. so that point is null and void. when otis is with maeve he is the absolute worst version of himself. he forgets his friendships. he is constantly questioning himself. he does things he does not want to do solely because he either thinks maeve wants him to, to impress her, or because he’s acting out from a disagreement they’ve had. why in the world would i still root for that toxicity??? but i know i’m not gonna get my rotis endgame even though it’s the endgame we all deserve. and for maeve i honestly just want her single and thriving in the US. WITHOUT issac or otis. a clean break and a fresh start.
