The Rokin and Damrak run along the original course of the river Amstel. These two roads meet in Dam Square which marks the spot a bridge was built across the river in 1270. It had doors which were used to dam the river at certain times to avoid flooding. The Damrak then became a harbor and it was around this area that the red light district first appeared. The walled canals led to the names De Wallen and Walletjes (little walls).

Amsterdam's picturesque canals are one of the city's most popular attractions. One of the best ways to see the city is from the water. Take a canal cruise or rent a boat and explore the waterways at your own leisure.

Amsterdam nightlife is enjoyably eclectic, and the ear-to-the-ground clubber can enjoy everything from minimalist grooves to maximum noise, as the annual Amsterdam Dance Event attests. After years of so-so clubbing following the demise of 1980s mainstays such as RoXY, the city has once more become a great place for creatures of the night – and don't they know it. There are more than enough excellent parties to go around in summer and, even off-season, Thursdays to Saturdays offer plenty of choice, whatever one's musical inclinations.

Amsterdam offers a limitless supply of restaurants, cafes and bars, somewhere around 1500! The words, bar and cafe are usually used interchangeably. The distinction is mostly seen in the title or layout of a place. Every street side, corner, canal, nook and cranny has something to offer your taste buds and mood. The spectrum begins with the traditional and relaxed brown cafes and ranges to the lively and crowded bars.

On arrival in Amsterdam, you’ll probably notice special signs offering the latest information about available parking spaces in the city. The Integrated Dynamic Parking system (IDP) divides the influx of cars into the city and reduces the number of kilometres required to find a parking spot.

The Singel is a canal in Amsterdam which encircled the city in the Middle Ages. It served as a moat around the city until 1585, when Amsterdam expanded beyond the Singel. The canal runs from the IJ bay, near Central Station, to the Muntplein square, where it meets theAmstel river. It is now the inner-most canal in Amsterdam's semicircular ring of canals.

Most of the traditional buildings in and around the canal ring have these terracotta or stone plaques imbedded in their masonry walls. Originally they indicated the trades of the people who owned the buildings but they now represent the history of the building itself or probably a more ironic or aspirational comment by the present owner who restored the building.
