hmmm okay i’m seeing the “dick grayson is a ray of sunshine” tag increase in popularity and i feel as though i may need to clarify that whenever EYE use it, the “dick grayson is a ray of sunshine” tag is not adorable harmless smiley optimistic ball of sunshine dick. to ME dick grayson is a ray of sunshine (brilliant and brutal and furious in a way that is impossible to dream of being until you meet him) (he is simmering and sharp and too bright to look at head on, raise a hand to shade your eyes) (he burns the skin of your arms and your shoulders and your cheeks until your flesh is blistered and red from prodding, in pain and glad for it, or darker and bronzed, grateful to be touched by him at all)

Donna Troy is a Homunculus
She is a horror to herself. When fanfic writers talk about the inherent FAKENESS and Performative factor of Dick Grayson’s Boy Next Door Golden Son Perfection they actually mean Donna fucking Troy.
I am in absolute dumbfounded HORROR at the amount of meta discourse that gets PROJECTED onto Dick Grayson’s personality. I’ve witnessed this weird switching of themes and psychological drive happening in 4th wall for LITERAL YEARS and it is SCARY.
Now…people have done this whole dance number by projecting Roy’s, or Wally’s or Jason’s or Tim’s or Damian’s issues on him…fuck I think fans even let Bruce get a ride.
Like y’all just pat Dick’s ass lovingly and say “This character can actually hold every single canon projection and personality trait and issues and self view of EVERY OTHER CHARACTER BUT HIMSELF.”
Dick Grayson is a hall of mirrors and y’all in the 4th wall scare me at what you think the reflection reads.
So lemme blow your minds a bit and go down the fuckin metaphysical SWITCH that happens. And let’s start with his fake fuckin walking horror of a character Donna Troy.
Let’s look at what fanfic writers do right?
Fans seem to think that the perfect sibling figure trying to stranglehold the motherhood role on their found family, following after everyone’s footsteps and meddling in their affairs and grinning manically ear to ear trying to appear harmless and loving and PERFECTLY PERFECT IN EVERY WAY, with hugs and love and understanding and crunching their teeth to DUST as everyone compares them to someone better, some GOD LIKE STANDARD, and dying INSIDE when they realize the cephalopod EXISTENTIAL HORROR of having NO personality and no life and white knuckling it on a thread while their mask is slipping on the boiling HOT LAVA OF MURDEROUS RAGE living inside of them just waiting to cut lose on someone anyone OMG maybe they need to YEET themselves away until they can get that big hole of NOTHING Gnawing away at their insides trying to pass itself off as a soul…in order.
My dudes. My lords. My enigmatic concubines.
That is 10000x DONNA FUCKIN TROY headspace.
If you write Dick like this…you actually mean Donna.
And it BLOWS my FUCKIN MIND how this happened ALL the fuckin time in the 4th wall.
Like Donna doesn’t think she’s real. She holds on tight to people and breaks down and doesn’t think she exists. That’s why her found family means EVERYTHING. She thinks she’s just an offshoot of Batman Wonder Woman. And she just wants to be loved. And basically tries to Mother herself and every Titan around her (especially Dick) and compensates for the parent figures she feels she never had. Fuck she even falls for a dude who’s is basically “DADDY.” She is issues on TOP of issues in NTT. She is one inch away from crushing things to smithereens. She is BARELY holding on by a thread and trying to pretend otherwise.
She is a funny contradiction in that she only looks like the golden child and the girl next door. Inside she knows she’s a hollowed out homunculus who just wants to be “normal.” She is literally like “I’m just a gurl” while having the freakin powers of a literal GODDESS.
That’s what’s HILARIOUS about her. She wants to talk on the phone and cuddle and be a HAWT MESS of a 20-something while trying to live up to Wonder Woman.
She’s like the anti-Wonder. While also being a freakin meta powerhouse.
And she keeps dying over and over again and she just wants to be a girl. Over and over and over again. And just wants to be a girl and have boyfriends and friends and just love…oh whoop now she’s been killed and erased and now she has to rely on what other people think her life meant and it doubles down on the identity issues she fuckin has.
And its creepy how people seem to think this is Dick. it’s just hilarious how this freaky 4th wall switch just keeps happening.

just found out it’s illegal to pump your own gas in new jersey. the attendant has to do it for you…
that’s insane. does that mean batman has to sit in the batmobile and wait while some minimum wage teenage worker pumps his gas for him?

One thing that always bothered me as a kid, and still bothers me, is it honestly makes so little sense Steph didn't rank super high on the scale of Martial Artists after receiving the Robin training, if it's so amazing. Considering what she could do while untrained, the experience she had, it's baffling that no one ever considered her a prodigy, or that she wasn't at least notably more skilled than say, Tim was, when she started out as Robin.
Like, Steph was in the field and knocking out grown men twice her size with zero training. It was not even mentioned that she took martial arts classes or anything to explain how she can do this, just gymnastics and softball. And both were high school gymnastics, high school softball, not fancy expensive classes??? Even Babs, in Batgirl Y1 had the advantage of having taken martial arts classes and presumably a lot more since her goal was to be in the FBI.
Meanwhile Steph like. She's jumping off rooftops and surfing trains and taking down bad guys with nothing. Tim's gone through extensive Batman training and trained with Lady Shiva and all this stuff, and obviously she's not as good as him and needs him to watch her back at times, but she can keep up with him, and even saves him or get the jump on him quite a few times, and that's incredible when you think about it. Tim gave her gadgets and instructions in the field, but it's never shown that he taught her any moves.
There's even a panel where Batman notes Stephanie almost snuck up on him and "not many people can do that" when again, no training, no martial arts classes, this is way before he agreed to give her any help at all-- and then for some reason, after noting this girl with no training is more talented than most people he knows, just keeps telling her she's not good enough and should go home.
That's a ridiculous level of raw talent, and it's honestly so bizarre nobody in the Batfamily ever noted that and kept telling her to go home. When she does get training, it's very sporadic, it is not clear how much Batman or Black Canary trained her the first time, he disappeared on her and then fired her as soon as he came back, and we never saw her get trained on screen by Dinah (the only person who ever acknowledged she had talent). She sparred with Cass, but Cass never taught her anything. Despite all this, she was noticeably getting way better during the era.
But when she received the six month Robin training that's supposed to make them so strong or whatever...how did that not result in her being a prodigy? She's the only Robin who was an experienced superhero before she took on the mantle?
Bruce literally tells her "Tim did this better" when he was training her about something, which makes no sense considering she came into being Robin with way more skills and experience and martial arts prowess??? When she was surviving on her own and fighting villains before that? When she could nearly sneak up on Bruce even before that?
You could claim she's a "bad student" or whatever, but she was a clearly very good at taking her gymnastic coach's instructions, enough to become a genius at it, so that doesn't really hold water.
The only explanation that would make any sense would be that Bruce taught her badly on purpose. which. unfortunately wouldn't be too far out of character from how he treated her in that era. (And that she apparently improved a lot under Babs tutelage as Batgirl but not his. So. Not a good look for him)
I mean the real answer for why all this makes no sense is DCs misogyny ofc. But it’s pretty wild how there’s no justification for this in universe.

Y'all. Dick is not a people pleaser. Idk where that came from when reading Dick's comics is basically an exercise in watching his eyes glaze over when someone begs not to do something crazy because in his mind he's already done it. Like, yes, Dick is very empathetic loves helping others but in the same way your dentist does. If they think it's the right move they're going to stick that long ass needle in your gums and drill into your teeth. Whether or not your happy about it is irrelevant.

Personal headcanon that when Dick said to Damian, "You were my robin." he meant more The Nickname and not The Title.

“I hate Bruce, why is he like that” and “Bruce is the one person I can count on at the end of the world no matter what” are two things that can be true at the same time. “I hate that man” and “that man will put his body and soul between me and the threat every time.”

i think dick grayson is at his most charming when he's genuine and caught off guard to the point of acting without reservation.. regardless of what he's doing when he's being real there's this inexplicable pull and a sacred yet grounding warmth surrounding him and yet only certain people can recognize it for what it is and the people that don't are instead drawn in by the facade he puts on and get caught up into the narrative that that facade of dick grayson wants attention and is nothing but shallow and these people are the ones who believe it is only natural to take advantage of him because the facade works too well and even if they see the real true him they will never understand that what he really is is deeply human in a way that somehow feels greater than life and
