covid magazine article i made for college

this was my final project for college this year. it is an article about the covid-19 pandemic and the fifth anniversary of the start of lockdown. i am proud of this and thought it would be nice to publicly share.

i conducted a survey on my class to get ideas on what i should include most and receive covid experiences from them. i researched magazine article designs and covers, researched basic covid facts and statistics, took photos (yes, all of those masks and the rainbow painting are mine) and made this a hypothetical feature of a hypothetical magazine brand. i made a logo for the hypothetical magazine using a knitted hedgehog i found at my bus stop as the mascot. the process for building and creating this took 10 weeks, or 30 college days.

i will update with my grade and my wix site that displays my process of creating this. (the wix site will not be the original graded wix, it will be a public-friendly version without all of the personal information. and fancier!)

Five Years Ago…

In this issue of Looking Back, we detail the main occurrences of 2020. If you, at any point during this time, had doubts about the pandemic existing, this article is for you.

Introduction: As everyone reading this will know, coronavirus became a global pandemic in late March of 2020. This was five years ago now, and the world has come far since then. In roughly 20-50 years from now, the new generations will start being taught about COVID-19 in school because they would not have been alive to experience it, similarly to how our generations were not alive to experience the historical topics we were taught about. In this article, we will remember the virus and the events, regulations and restrictions that came with it.

Tests and vaccines: In the UK alone, 24,910,387 COVID cases were recorded, with 232,112 deaths and 22,954,691 recoveries. This data was gathered from worldometers.info. Tests to detect the virus were made and able to be completed at testing sites. This first test method was referred to as polymerase chain reaction, or PCR. An NHS app was released in September 2020 to mark COVID cases and inform the user if they had come into contact with an infected person. In April 2021, a different type of COVID test called rapid lateral flow was released for the public to take at home in a similar method to the PCR. The tests were successful in detecting cases and many people took them when necessary. In a survey conducted, most people that took them thought that both tests provided accurate results. Vaccines were first introduced on 8th December and, in the first year alone, almost 120 million doses were administered, with over 3,000 vaccination sites open. Along with the boosters, these vaccines were proven very effective. This information was gathered from gov.uk.

Isolation experience:  For many months, strict restrictions were put into place to prevent further spread of the virus. During this time, all young people had to be homeschooled, adults had to work from home and many online events took place over this period. It was at this point that we acknowledged the hard work that the key workers put in, especially the NHS, and chose to honour them by applauding and banging pots and pans out in the streets weekly and making posters. I painted my own poster to honour the NHS. I conducted my own survey on my class about experiences during the pandemic. The results:

Everyone said that they did not believe COVID was fake.

Deciding the topics to include here, tests and vaccines was the highest voted.

¾ of the responders said that COVID affected them or anyone close to them personally.

Asking for details about the experiences. Before using them here, I made sure to obtain consent from the responders that provided experiences, giving the option for them to remain anonymous or directly referred to, which was question 5. The following are some of the responses I received.

Thank you to everyone in my class that participated in this survey, including my tutors, and submitted experiences to use.

Masks and other restrictions: From the start of the lockdown, the social distancing restriction and hand washing and sanitising guidance were discussed and implemented. From June 2020 to January 2022, face masks were required to be worn in public spaces. There were exemptions with people with certain disabilities and primary-aged children. Acceptable forms of masks included surgical masks and cloth masks, which many often made themselves. They came in a range of colourful designs and could have disposable or in-built filters. In the banner, you can see all the masks that I own and used over COVID and a plush toy demonstrating how to wear one correctly, as well as an avatar of a woman wearing one incorrectly. Most of mine have filter pockets.

COVID deniers: While most people followed the government guidance and rules, there were many that refused to. This was due to individual beliefs and preferences but also influence from extremism. These people took action by meeting with others, not wearing masks and protesting. Surveys were conducted to find the disbelievers, who were mostly from the US, unsurprisingly. They believed that masks were made a requirement “in order for the government to control humanity” and that vaccines “change DNA.” Surprisingly, however, when a survey was conducted in Greece, it revealed that under 30s were more likely to disbelieve COVID than over 30s.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the coronavirus pandemic was a very challenging time for the world. Many loved ones were lost, many negative thoughts, certain behaviours creating worse problems and the situation felt never-ending. However, among it all, we came out feeling relief that had been held back, and we survived it. Even if we lost hundreds of thousands, they will always be remembered in the minds and hearts of those that cared. If you are reading this and you had doubts about this global event, I hope I have provided enough evidence to prove your thoughts otherwise.

looking back on fandom

do you ever look through websites like deviantart and see posts from 2008-2015 and see the artist is inactive, and hope that wherever they are now, they're fine and doing what they love?

i do this with aa a lot.

as well as this, i also feel glad seeing people being more appreciative of the art back then.

especially art of ships such as narumayo, mitsumei, mitsumayo, kayworth, narumei, cykesquill, etc.

you know, the art that gets reposted on pinterest without credit and receives hate comments from antis, or comments like "omg the siblings ever", being oblivious to the fact it is actually ship art.

it makes me think of better times, even though i was only 3 in 2008.

also, i feel happy seeing an old fanart post from someone on here and finding out they are still into that media now.

this is just another reason i wish i was a teen on the internet in the early-mid 10s.

just saw someone talking about a ragebait aa pinterest commenter and it made me think of this account.

this account is a treasure trove of obvious ragebait, but you can still see people in the comments falling for it.

examples of their work:

these all have quite a few commenters questioning why they exist. especially the headcanon and ship tier list posts, my gosh. the amount of people saying things like, "UMM?? WRIGHTWORTH AND DESIRON IN 'BETTER AS FRIENDS'??? HAVE YOU EVEN PLAYED THE GAMES?????" on that post is insane.

the ragebait account mentioned by the person i saw is one of a few accounts that play along with the strange logic of this account and make up their own headcanons.

10/10 account. definitely recommend if you would like to see raging wrightworths.

...look, i understand how it could be funny to imagine pearl as a raging homophobe because of her being a strict narumayo shipper, especially to wrightworth and franmaya shippers, but i can fully see her being supportive of the different types of love and identity in the world! also, many narumayo shippers are lgbtq+ themselves and headcanon phoenix and maya as lgbtq+, too. not to mention i headcanon both maya and pearl as aroace, but this is set before they find that out about themselves...

reacting to a story i wrote when i was 11

fun fact, this story is based on a comic strip from a kinder surprise toy. i stuck the illustrations of the strip alongside the story in the original "book" thing i made for it.

hi, my name is lily. i am 11 years old and have two best friends, violet and rose. my favourite and signature colour is yellow, rose is rose pink and violet is violet purple. this is a magnificent story that we just need to share with you. so sit back and read!

the girls and i were walking in after-school forest after school one day. rose spotted a chest at the end of the enchanted rainbow. we opened it and we found three rings made of flowers. we put them on and we turned into flower fairies. enjoy!

seemingly random date, but i think this was around the time i wrote this story.

after school, we went for a walk in after-school forest, the forest you can only visit after school.

what happens to the forest on weekends and during school days and holidays? does it just… not exist? that's not how nature works.

the enchanted rainbow was out. it was always exciting when it was out. it meant there was something at the end of it.

"it was always exciting when it was out" implies the rainbow is not always out, which is normal for rainbows as they need certain conditions to exist. however, "enchanted" must mean it is not a normal rainbow. i need more information on the forest and rainbow.

so that's just what we did.

you are not establishing what you are doing at the end of the paragraph. i know you are going to find the end of the rainbow, because i wrote this, but it is not explicitly stated or clear enough to point to that for someone other than me to understand.

suddenly, rose found the end of the rainbow while i talked to violet. "look over here!" she called. "i've found the end!" we immediately turned and looked. we saw a chest. it was small and pink. "i wonder what's inside?" i said. i found something glistening on the ground. it was a small, pink key. beside it was a purple key, and next to it was a yellow and purple key. we took the key of our favourite colour and turned it into the locks. i lifted the chest lid slowly and carefully. on a blue sparkly cushion were three purple, yellow-purple and pink flower-shaped rings. we all gasped in amazement.

why the tiny descriptions-

"i wonder what they are?" violet said. "they look like rings in the shape of flowers," rose replied.

lily established the fact these were flower shaped rings in the description of the last paragraph.

"i'm not too sure about this, but i have a feeling we should try them on," i suggested. the girls agreed.

oh yes, trying on random jewellery from strange chests appearing out of nowhere. very trustworthy.

we slid the rings onto our middle fingers, clenched our fists and raised them into the air together. then, rose tingled, i jingled and violet wiggled as we slowly changed. the tingling, jingling and wiggling stopped after a while when we had transformed fully. i looked down. violet looked down. rose looked down. we had dresses entirely made out of flowers, leaf wings, no shoes and fairy dust…

…that was a very strange descriptive transformation process.

we then stared at each other, confused. "i feel like a… FAIRY!" violet cried at the top of her lungs. she had always believed in fairies, and so had we, rose and i.

you do not need to refer to them with both a group pronoun and their names, just one or the other.

finally we had achieved our dream, to become flower fairies. we were so happy that we flew up in the air proudly. we didn't notice we had crowns on as well, and the fact that we were smaller than usual. but that was just the start of our adventure…

the end! …of story one.

part 2, which i labelled as a new story, even though it is more like a chapter 2:

last time, me and the girls turned into flower fairies. after that happened, we kept the rings made of flowers and always remembered that day. our next adventure happened soon after…

only 2 days after the original? then why was it necessary to mention the fact you "always remembered that day" in the intro? and where did you keep them? did you keep the chest, too?

we received a call. violet and rose were at my house for a sleepover.

…so, we're not establishing what happened in the two days between the events? how did they change back? 19th may 2016 was a thursday, so they must have had to have been able to change back before school the next day.

the call was from a flower fairy girl, just like us. violet answered the phone. here is the call: "hello, violet, rose and lily. my name is petal. i am calling you to help our city. simply put on your flower rings, just like before, and fly over to the pink castle, which should be to your right, where i will explain more." we accepted and did as we were told.

…how does she know them?! was the chest a tracker? were the rings able to send their identities off to wherever this castle is? very creepy.

once we were in fairy world, we flew over to the pink castle on our right and knocked at the vast purple door. we were greeted by petal.

…'vast' as an adjective to describe a large object? really? also, fairy world was not even mentioned anywhere else before this. we have no idea of this sudden new setting. and how did they know it was petal at the door? and where are the girls' parents in the first place?!

"hello, you must be petal." rose said. "yes, yes, hello. we have a big problem." "we are being attacked by our enemies, the goblins. we need YOU to stop them." "but how?" rose asked. "use your fairy dust to magic up a wall to stop the goblins from getting in. you must do it before dusk, or else we will all fade away." "that's horrible! of course we'll help!" i cried. we accepted the quest. it was the right thing to do.

why can't they do it themselves? can she at least explain why the goblins are the fairies' enemies? very cliché for goblins, too.

this is the end, by the way. i never completed this, but i am planning on rewriting this and maybe even redrawing the comic strip, if i feel brave enough to. if anyone from the writing community finds this and would like to give me advice for the potential rewrite, feel free to.

in a very hypothetical situation where, in the equally hypothetical aa7, there was a (one-off) line where phoenix says that he and edgeworth are "like brothers", how would you feel?

i have a feeling some of you would react like this post. (post contents for those who cannot open the page: "every time a male character refers to his homoerotic situationship as his “brother” an angel loses its wings" - lynx-224)

(pick the seventh option if you would still ship them, but believe most of the fandom would react like the third option.)

this also serves as an announcement that i do not care what you ship or at what point in the timeline you ship them. after all, in reality, you are just shipping pixels, pieces of code, markings and words together.

also, irrelevant but still worth mentioning as i have seen hate for these (mostly on pinterest), but oc x canon and selfshipping is, has always been, and will always be, valid in fandom, no matter what you say.

(me personally, i would probably act like the fifth option.)

ace attorney is a game series where you play as defence (defense) attorney phoenix wright and, later on, his employees. phoenix's first real opponent is prosecutor miles edgeworth. these two are the most popular ship in the fandom by FAR, especially considering their backstory together, which i will not spoil here.

here is a picture of them.

"yes" applies even if you have not seen/played much, but have enough knowledge fandom-wise.

both polls are made to compare the similarities between both ships. i know, it's a stretch to compare two fictional characters with two real people, but both fandoms are INSANE about them.

(me personally, i love ace attorney, but i have never shipped wrightworth. i ship phoenix with someone else and think edgeworth is the aroace ever. their backstory is actually the main reason why i don't ship them!)
