via NYPost: Immigration and Customs Enforcement is preparing to launch a “big f–king operation” across sanctuary cities — including Chicago and New York — immediately after President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, multiple sources told The Post.
Starting Jan. 21, multi-day “ground operations” will be launched across cities that have served as safe havens for migrants because the local authorities do not cooperate with the federal government when it comes to immigration issues, sources said.

I love all the characters of YTTD but my absolute favorite has to be Rio Ranger. From his shithead personality to design I love the little guy, but as a writer, what I love most is just how tragic he is as a character, ESPECIALLY with the added context from the Kai Mini-episode.
There are two main interpretations I've thought of when it comes to the creation and reasoning behind Rio Ranger by Gashu.
Interpretation A is that ASUNARO told Gashu to make a Doll for the Death Game. Gashu, drawing inspiration from Sei, recreates his lost son. This time, however, he wants this version of his son to survive and to succeed. He disallows Safalin from implementing any positive emotions such as joy or empathy because he believed Sei, despite the explicit confirmation from ASUNARO otherwise, could have survived with Kai had he simply felt less. So he makes a Sei who is "better" only for him to prove to be an unrecognizable monster who fails yet again because he could only feel envy and anger and the likes.
Interpretation B revolves partially around the idea that maybe Gashu only programmed the Doll. I don't think it's ever explicitly said (unless I'm forgetting a line of dialogue somewhere that says otherwise) that Gashu built Ranger, just that he had to give Ranger feelings to make him more than just a mechanical husk. If someone else has the job of building Dolls, they might've built Ranger off the likeness of Sei in order to taunt Gashu for thinking that "God" needed more than one right hand (I wouldn't put it past Miley or Midori). Upon receiving this painful reminder, Gashu refuses to let it have any joy in its existence and ensures it will only ever feel envy towards what it can never be, and anger towards those who are. More or less sets Ranger up to fail, as if to say "You will never be Sei.", guaranteeing that he'll be able to do away with him sooner rather than later, punishing him for acting the only way he knew to.
I like interpretation B because it's a little more screwed up in my opinion, but yeah. Either way, Rio Ranger was a calamity waiting to happen, to no fault of their own.

I very much have a love-hate relationship with everything I write, like on one hand I will pour my heart and soul into everything I make, pushing through burnout even if it's bad for me, desperately wanting someone to read what I have made. On the other hand I would never recommend anything I make to anyone ever and would probably just die on the spot if any of my friends read what I wrote.

ooo so for midori i feel like it is less "asunaro wanted to get rid of him" and more like asunaro had exceedingly high expectations for him, so when he screws things up, of course he's going to be barred from the death game (the thing that he proclaims to have been looking forwards to more than anything else)
and i truly believe he was just born into it all. born into the organization and into fulfilling his role. kai's mini episode is a glimpse into how children in asunaro are raised and expected to be. the mysterious woman who is very very likely to be hiyori's mother in that very same episode gives us insight into how hiyori specifically was raised. also the fact that she seems to outrank gashu? much to think about
hiyori was groomed for this "holy game" from the beginning, it's his whole purpose, so he's understandably upset about losing everything
also this deleted midori dialogue below. yes
Don't look so unexpected... I... more than anyone, enjoy life... / But you know what...? There's something I was looking forward to even more... / Killing each other...! This Death Game...!! / The shallow everyday life can't compare...! Gambling your life... your soul...! A true...! Game...!! / Everyone went off on your own... It's not fair...!! / I also...!! Was supposed to be here...!! With everyone else!! In the same position!! Killing each other!! / But Alice killed me...!! In the family register, I'm dead...!! / I couldn't stand just watching by silently!!
^ totally normal worldview from someone raised in the "dying and killing within the death game is holy and special and YOU are Chosen For This" organization
so it's like. he's extremely valuable to asunaro but only as long as he fulfills his purpose. as long as he is useful to them. but people who mess up, lose their usefulness? cast aside, forgotten, punished, or killed
comparing kai and hiyori is valuable but it's also important to note that kai wasn't listed as a participant. hiyori was. kai was able to break away, just a little bit, and experience life and affection and normalcy outside of how he was raised, but it still wasn't enough to save him. hiyori was planned as a participant. maybe he got a little too attached to shin in particular (already might have been a red flag for asunaro, who doesn't seem too pleased about very close attachments).
so. head in hands over the tiniest crumbs we get of shin and hiyori's time together but it's like. in the photos we see of shin in hiyori's house and in the photos on hiyori's false keycard, he smiles. in shin's lost memory sequence he is smiley and cozy at hiyori's side. the way that shin's collectibles are on open display and how sara focuses on the line about how shin ran the heater when hiyori wasn't there makes me think they were living in the same space, at least briefly. i'm going on a tangent here but. the way that hiyori suddenly vanishes from shin's life after his screwup with alice?? just maaaybe his separation from shin (what was probably the closest to normal "boring" existence outside of asunaro as he might have gotten) was punishment.
ough and it's fascinating to me that kai's punishment seems to have been being placed in the death game (NOT a planned participant), whereas hiyori's punishment was banishment from the death game (WAS a planned participant).
kai gets to develop an attachment for the mundane and fall in love with it but. he didn't actually escape, even if he briefly found peace and gets to live this way up until the death game happens. but hiyori gets ripped away from the mundane as punishment. and i am Begging to get more insight into what Happened To Him in the time spent after his "death" and before the death game,, please,,
anyways it's interesting to compare kai and hiyori under the lens of asunaro teachings but also kind of unfair to compare how they turned out when their paths in life and the expectations for them were clearly not the same

The more I think about it, Midori was kinda an idiot and not even because the players fooled him during the banquet. Midori likes to act powerful and like he's always the one in control, but then you remember his job description is 90% just:
Die
And when you really think about it, it doesn't seem like ASUNARO valued or liked him. I mean, if nothing else, they at least trusted him to go and get all the participants to sign a consent form, which, from what we know, was a pretty important task, but aside from that, ASUNARO really just told him
Tumblr media
Like, at least the other floor masters, Miley and Gashu weren't just flat out told to die (Gashu just sorta decided to, anyways). It really makes you wonder how ASUNARO viewed Midori. From what we know, he was originally intended to be a participant himself until he "died", which just further implies that ASUNARO was itching to get rid of him. Who replaced him, if anyone (ASUNARO could have planned for 21 participants, counting Midori, or they replaced him with Kai), is unclear, but if Kai was meant to serve as a substitute for him as ASUNARO's traitor within the participants, and knowing how Kai was considered a non-candidate who wasn't meant to win (and we all know what happens to losers in the death game), it all just heavily supports the idea that ASUNARO wanted nothing more than to kill him off.
If you were working for a company that wanted nothing more than to put you in situations where you were all but guaranteed to die, you wouldn't want to work there anymore, would you? But Midori does. That plus his overwhelming fear of death, makes him look like a really big idiot, and to be honest, I think he may really be one. Sure, he's smart in a lot of ways, being skilled at manipulation and pressing people's buttons, not to mention reprogramming Maple forget her original purpose is to kill him, but he also just couldn't see that his boss clearly had it out for him.
So if they hate him so much, why even hire him? I believe, that in Kai's mini-episode, a silhouetted figure appears whose hair resembles Midori's. This has led many to believe she is Midori's mother (which might explain why he's so screwed up, if he was raised in ASUNARO). If his mom already worked there, and probably outranked Gashu, that could have influenced ASUNARO's decision when it came to employing Midori.
AKA Midori is a nepo-baby.
ASUNARO hired him even though they didn't want to and either his mom didn't actually care that much about him (otherwise she might have objected to the killing of her son) or has retired or died and then ASUNARO had an employee who they don't want nor need. In other words Midori's relationship with his employers is more like
Tumblr media
As the only floor master whose death is actively sought out by ASUNARO, Midori might actually be pretty low down on the totem pole, I'd say below the other two floor masters, but just above Ranger and Safalin who aren't really floor masters. Midori clearly doesn't understand that ASUNARO would 100% let him die, seeing as how he pleaded to Meister right before he died. At the end of the day, to them he's just a problem child they can finally do away with. The experiments ASUNARO let him do on other people "until they broke or he got bored" were probably just ASUNARO keeping him entertained to shut him up for a while, more or less treating him like a literal kid.
The more I think about it, ASUNARO clearly values Midori especially little, and it's honestly a little funny to think about. Him and his experiments really just make him the death game equivalent of a tablet kid.
