July Wrap Up
Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune
★★★★☆
I kinda had an idea of how this one would end, but I had no clue how it would get there. Honestly, I liked this one even more than the last book I read by TJ Klune. The characters were super relatable, and I really enjoyed how death was handled in such a thoughtful yet quirky way. The whole concept of the teahouse between worlds was unique and felt cozy, making the story warm and inviting. Overall, it was a really nice read, full of heart and humor, and I definitely recommend it.
Tea You at the Alter by Rebecca Thorne
Tomes & Tea #3
★★★★★
I can't recommend this series enough! The cozy tea and book shop vibe, the fun banter between characters, and all the emotions, it's all so great! I absolutely love the characters and can never get enough of their adventures. I went into this one expecting just a wedding, but I got so much more, with unexpected twists and soft moments that kept me hooked. I finished the book in a day because I just had to know how it all turned out. I can't wait for the next one in the series coming out later this year, especially with how this one ended.
Overall
I really slacked on the reading this month. I was so busy with conventions, work, trips, and other hobbies that I only managed to read the two. Both were great reads though. I already have my next read picked out now is just the struggle of finding the time and attention span to read it. I'll get it though!

Don't abandon your normal moments
You don’t need grand ideas or epic plot twists to write something powerful. Small, honest moments can be just as meaningful as world-changing events.
A character fumbling through breakfast or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time can hit just as hard as a battle scene, so don’t underestimate the quiet stuff. Truth lives in the quiet moments, and that’s what readers will remember.

June Wrap Up
Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell
★★★☆☆
The main reason I picked this one up is because it’s one of the few set in my home state that really caught my attention. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. It wasn’t a bad read, but it was definitely different from what I expected. I found the explanations and the ending to be a little lacking, which left me wanting more. The premise had a lot of potential, but I felt it didn’t fully deliver on that promise. Overall, it was an interesting read, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Killer Triggers by Joe Kenda
★★★★☆
This was one of the two nonfiction books by Joe Kenda. I listened to the audiobook version of this one while working on a mural, and even though it covers stories from the show, it was still great in book form. I highly recommend the audiobook for this since he reads it himself, and it comes across as more of a podcast-style interview where he’s just allowed to talk.
A Pirate's Life For Tea by Rebecca Thorne
Tomes & Tea #2
★★★★★
I think I liked this one even more than the first book. The main characters are just as amazing as before, and the new characters are just as great, too. It really hit me how my collection is seriously lacking in queer pirates. I’m super excited to dive into the rest of the series and see what other adventures Kianthe and Reyna get up to.
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
★★★★☆
This was another cute fantasy read. I have to say, I didn’t really connect with the main character; I understand he was meant to be a bit bland as he figures out who he wants to be, but something about him just didn’t click for me. On the bright side, I really enjoyed his interactions with the children, they brought a lot of charm to the story. I also found the Master of the House to be an interesting character, which added some depth to the plot. Overall, I did enjoy the book and I’m looking forward to checking out more of TJ Klune's work.
Overall
This was the month for audiobooks for me. I had plenty of opportunities at work and at home to pop in my earbuds and listen to audiobooks which worked very well for Killer Triggers. I'm hoping to start reading a few more TJ Klune books next month and perhaps finally getting around to the third book in the Tomes & Tea series. Either way I feel like I'm making great progress in my reading goal and really finding books I rather enjoy.

5(ish) Pride Month Reading Recs!
1)
Tumblr media
Of course I have to start this off with Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree along with its prequel story Bookshops and Bonedust. These are the staple for cozy fantasy and if you love DnD like I do you'll really love these too. Full of amazing characters you can't help but love, I can't wait for the next installment being released this fall.
2)
Tumblr media
Keeping with the cozy fantasy is Rebecca Thorne's Tomes & Tea series. Magic responsibilities and evil queens pushed under the rug in exchange for books and tea. So far I have only read the first installment Can't Spell Treason Without Tea however I already fallen in love with the characters and the other two are high on my TBR list with the fourth installment in the series to be released soon.
3)
Tumblr media
Swapping over to mystery is Julia Bartz's debut novel The Writing Retreat. This book is one that pulled me out of a deep reading slump about a year and a half ago and she quickly became one of my favorite authors. This book is full of struggles of a writer, mystery, and sexual tension which isn't something I usually go for. Regardless this is one I recommend to all of my friends and they too have all enjoyed.
4)
Tumblr media
Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu is another story I will literally throw at people to make them read it. A lovely sapphic vampire story from the 1870s that predates Dracula itself. It's a short read but gods is it amazing and even had my laughing at some of the main character Laura's behavior.
5)
Tumblr media
Lastly I'm going to recommend the poetry collection Limitless by Patrick Bex. This collection primarily focuses on Bex's experience being aromantic asexual. I, myself being aroace, was personally able to relate to a lot of the included poems. It's one I recommend for those who love poetry and would like to have a better understanding of some of the aromantic or asexual experiences or for those who are also aro, ace, or aroace who need to know they aren't alone with in their experiences.

May Wrap Up
NOS4A2 by Joe Hill
★★★☆☆
This one took me a bit to get through, probably because I was busy and didn’t connect with the story as much as I thought I would. The concept is really cool, but the pacing threw me off. It felt like it dragged in the middle, which made it hard to stay engaged, and then it rushed at the end, leaving me a bit confused. I think if the pacing had been more consistent, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Still, there were some intriguing moments and characters that kept me curious about how it would all wrap up.
Rage by Stephen King
★★★☆☆
When I found out that Stephen King had a book he ultimately banned himself, I was really intrigued. Even though it’s no longer published, it’s not hard to find a downloaded PDF online. I started reading it a while back, but with my busy schedule and constant distractions from other things on my phone, it took me a while to finish. After I finally got through it, I can see why it was banned. The main character is really compelling, and his influence on his classmates was fascinating as the story unfolded.
Animal Farm by George Orwell
★★★☆☆
This is another book I’ve heard a lot about but only just got around to reading. While I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped, I didn’t dislike it either. I can certainly understand why it’s considered a banned book, especially given how realistic the themes are, even with the animal characters. It’s definitely a thought-provoking read that I would recommend everyone experience at least once.
Overall
This month has been incredibly busy for me with a job promotion, trying to keep up with my family, and spending time with friends. As a result, I haven’t had much time to read. I’m hoping to find a new rhythm with my schedule soon, which will hopefully free up more time for reading, as I have a long list of books I’m really wanting to get to.

bingewatching will never come close to bingereading. there is nothing like blocking out the entire Earth for ten hours to read a book in one sitting no food no water no shower no bra and emerging at the end with no idea what time it is or where you are, a dried-up prune that's sensitive to light and loud noises because you've been in your room in the dark reading by the glow of a single LED. it's like coming back after a three-month vacation in another dimension and now you have to go downstairs and make dinner. absolutely transcendental
