Sage is very extravagant, he cares about appearance over practicality, as he believes he can fix anything with his false animus magic.

Mako is the opposite, but is forced to conform to the intense fixation her kingdom has over appearance. She was given prosthetic wings; gifted to her from the Queen herself as a snide joke, as they can only be posed like a doll and cannot help her fly. They’re pretty though, I guess.
