Chapter 19: Mighty Warrior

“And Neteyamur—!” She calls, having the boy stop in his tracks at once so he could look back at her. The old lady stares deep into the Omatikaya boy’s golden eyes, her own green ones filling with unshed tears. “It will be alright. The Great Mother holds all her children in her heart.” Neteyam falters, taken aback by the sudden despair shadowing her face. He takes half a step towards her, wanting to console her, but Sra’awpxa vigorously shakes her head no, takes a deep breath and blinks the tears away. “I’ll be fine. Go.” She orders.

Chapter 15: The ambush

Neteyam’s face flames up. “It’s not a courting gift.” He denies categorically.

“Of course,” Tsireya giggles, obviously not convinced at all by the other's words, “although to be honest, it might as well be.” Neteyam retaliates with a slap of his tail against the shorter girl’s shoulder, flustered. “I mean, you both clearly have chosen each other. A lot more people than you think can see that Aonung only has eyes for you.” She taunts, snickering when she sees Neteyam’s ears lower in embarrassment. “It’s pretty obvious. And cute.”

AO3 Comments are SO SO SOOOOOOO important because you can only leave Kudos ONCE. You add to the hit count ONCE.

So whenever someone updates their fic, the ONLY way an author knows who their regular readers are is if they comment on each chapter. And we WANT to know who's still reading.

Believe it or not, some of us think about the name that pops up constantly in the comments and go "omg I can't wait to see what they think of THIS SPECIFIC SCENE cuz I KNOW they'll say something about it!!!"

So, it's pretty much a standard in the fandom that Lo'ak is described to be an exact copy of his dad, while Neteyam is the exact copy of his mum, right?

It's arguabel on the looks. I just think they share traits of both their parents, but that's also not what this post is about.

I want to speak on the character traits the boys share with their parents.

Lo'ak is always made out to be a mini Jake. He's reckles just like his dad when he was young. He doesn't listen, has a big mouth, just like Jake. Yes.

But.

He shares one crucial trait with his mother. One that makes a big part of his character.

Neytiri and Lo'ak are both easily provoked. They are short tempered and impulsive, when it comes to their family and loved ones.

Example: Lo'ak picking a fight with Aonung, after he insulted Kiri. Just like Neytiri snapped at Ronal after she disrespected Jake. Neither of them thinking about possible consequences.

They both act without thinking, just jumping to defend their loved ones. In hindsight both realize their actions haven't been so wise, but in that moment of anger they act on their feelings.

And then there is Jake and Neteyam. Both of them are able to stay level headed when faced with stressful situations.

While Jake used to be reckless in his youth, he was never as short tempered as Neytiri. It takes much to make him snap. That's why he is such a good leader. He is able to keep a cool head under pressure, he is able to think straight when angered. He also functions as Neytiri's tether in heated situations, making her calm and refocus.

Neteyam shares this trait with him. He's in full control about his actions. He's willing to let go of the anger he clearly felt when Aonung insulted Kiri, bc he knew of the consequences a fight would take.

You could argue here that that's because he's the oldest. True, but his and Lo'ak's age only differ by a year and older siblings are not always this level headed. The goal is to protect the young ones, many don't think ahead of that.

But Neteyam does, becaus just like his father he thinks in a strategic way.

Example: Neteyam warning Aonung to stay away from Kiri, but not acting on his anger and picking a fight, to prevent future difficulties for his family. Jake, apologozing on Neytiri's behalf after Ronal disrespected him. He let's the attack on his own person slide, taking the hit to give his family a chance with the Metkayina clan.

They are thinking things through, before they act.

I'm not at all saying that the boys share traits with only one of their parents. It's just that these two characteristics stand out a lot, mirroring their parents strongly.

“You seem to forget who you are messing with, Fishlips.” Neteyam grits out, head hovering inches over Aonung’s stunned face. “Who’s the Mighty Warrior?” He asserts with a smug smirk, knife pushing a bit more against Aonung’s throat.

“You are.” Aonung concedes in a strained voice, breath cut short from the knife pushing against his trachea and the added weight of Neteyam resting on chests.

Chapter 11 summary

Neteyam looks down at their hands, hesitating on what to answer. What did Aonung want to talk about? Was he going to tell him he didn’t want to be friends anymore? What if he didn’t feel like spending as much time with the outsider he is now that Tonowari has allowed him to sit with the warriors of his clan? Aonung’s body language didn’t exactly translate this idea but then maybe he was just trying to save face in front of his siblings so as to not humiliate him more than necessary? Neteyam gulps. Whatever it was that the other wanted to tell him, he had a bad feeling about it.

Chapter 10 pt.3 summary

“Alright, ok, Baby Fang, I'm going.” He huffs with a fond smile, catching his hands and briefly squeezing them before letting go. “I’ll find you later, ok? Go sit close to the fire and keep an ear out for when the drummers come out, that’s when the dances will start.” He instructs quietly then slightly shakes Neteyam’s arm when he notices that his attention isn’t on him. “Hey, you hear me? Don’t sit in the back. Sit up front so you can see me clearly, alright?”

“Yes, yes, I will.” He promises, rolling his eyes and gently prying Aonung’s hand off him, “just go now, your father is waiting for you.”
