Hi everyone reading this!
I always felt the Marvel movies don’t go into enough depth about Bucky’s character. He is such a deep character and I always wanted to being that to life, so what better than just, writing a fanfiction about Bucky x reader throughout his entire life.
This will probably take forever to complete since I write when I feel like it, I don’t have a set schedule or anything so I can’t promise regular updates.
So for this chapter it’s really just a prologue, just a short introduction to the story, just a little taste.
This will probably be very slow-burn, I tried to make it lore accurate and also time accurate so I put in some 30s references and sayings. I really hope you like it!

Spring 1934
You always felt like your life only truly started after you met Rebecca Barnes. For the first 14 years of your life, your parents smushed you into a pristine little box, Rebecca tore that box apart.
It started on a Saturday morning, the type of morning when it was strangely quiet. You could occasionally hear the low drone of a car engine and some chattering, but it was still quiet, considering it wasn’t that early. Rain was pouring down outside, but of course, now, of all days, your mother sent you to do errands for her.
Your mother, stubborn as ever, refused to let the help run the errands for you; she insisted you had to. After much arguing with your mother, you went and got dressed. Your mother also insisted on picking out your clothes. “We have a reputation to uphold,” she would always say right before dressing you in overly expensive clothing.
Once you were ready to go out you noticed that your driver was missing. You sighed, Mother must’ve gone and gotten her hair done. That meant walking. You grabbed your sad old umbrella and started walking.
:・゚✧:・.☽˚。・゚✧:・.: :・゚✧:・.☽˚。・゚✧:・.: :・゚✧:・.☽˚。・゚
You just collected the last thing on your list; your mother’s new Bonwit Teller dress. She had to get it tailored by her old friend Dot. You were surprised your mother would trust her, considering she ran an old shop in a dingy area of Brooklyn, not typically her scene.
You had just left Dot’s shop when you noticed a girl your age, yelling at a boy. She was small, thinner than someone who’s 14 should be. Her clothes were well-worn and soaked from the rain and her shoulder-length brown hair was clearly self-cut.
The boy was clearly a bit older than both of you, but he too was in bad shape. He was clearly taunting the girl, and you could hear some of his lousy insults.
As you were watching the scene the girl hurled back insults, your favorite being, “Talk slick again, and we’ll see if that mouth still works with a fat lip!” That one surprised both you and the boy, since his eyes visibly widened before he got into a rather protective stance.
It was clear the boy was trying- and failing miserably, to intimidate her.
Before she could react the boy stepped closer and grabbed her by the wrist and she yelped in pain. Without thinking you dropped your mother’s brand new dress onto the sidewalk and the other bags you were carrying and picked up a rock from the side of the road.
“Hey, jerk!” You yelled and quickly threw the boy with the rock, and it took his attention off the small brunette just long enough for her to punch him square in the jaw.
The boy stumbled backwards, his expression was now shocked, like he hadn’t actually thought her insult meant anything.
The girl lifted her fist again, but the boy bolted, running off like a scared puppy.
The girl mumbled something and shook her head. She looked straight at you, “Thanks little miss money.” She says in a half-joking half-condescending manner as she eyes the tailor-made dress and mountain of bags beside you.
You weren’t sure how to answer that so you merely nodded. She somehow must’ve noticed your discomfort, since she stepped over to you and extended her hand, “I’m Rebecca, Rebecca Barnes but please never call me that, call me Becca. Rebecca takes too long to pronounce. Thanks for the help, even though I didn’t actually need it.” She said with a small smile, it was clear that she was trying to seem tough.
You let out a soft amused huff and gave her your name. “What was that jerk even mad about?” You question, Rebecca shrugs, “Accidentally hit his bike with a rock.” “Accidentally? Really?” She smirked at your skeptical tone.
“Yeah, he must have a magnetic bike or something, since I threw the rock and his bike attracted it, totally not my fault. It’s Brooklyn, he should get used to it.” You giggle at her nonchalance towards the situation.
“Who taught you to punch like that in the first place?!” She smiled, “My older brother Bucky, always gets into a lot of fights too. Well… I guess it’s not really his fault, it’s his best friend, Steve’s fault. He always gets into trouble, then Bucky has to save him.” She rambled, it was clear that this girl liked talking, and while that usually would’ve bothered you, it didn’t.
She paused, “You should probably pick those up.” She pointed to the now soaking wet bags and your mother’s new filthied dress. Your eyes widened in fear, something you weren’t aware Rebecca noticed.
You scramble to pick them up as the reality of the situation dawns on you, you only now realise that it’s still pouring and that you just ruined all your mother’s new clothes.
Rebecca bent down and helped you gather the bags, She studied your panicked expression, “She’s gonna kill me…” you whispered, “Who?” Rebecca asked quickly, with an almost aggressive tone like she wanted to protect you.
“My mother, I can’t take them back like this! They’re all wet!” You whine and complain, not even noticing your own sopping wet clothes, or Rebecca’s. A cold hand gives over a bag and she softly touches your shoulder. “You can warm up and dry them off at mine?” She said in a new and much softer tone.
Something about the way she looked at you made you trust her, and before you knew it you both were running down the street trying not to get any wetter while running to her house.
Once you reached it you noticed it was a rundown apartment complex. The bricks were faded and there were cracks in the pavement and yet somehow it was more homey than your house. While your house was expensive and pristine theirs was homey and quaint.
She led you inside, and you could smell some breakfast being made. You entered the living room, it was cramped and had mismatched furniture but it seemed like home.
Rebecca took you to her room. She, without a word, lent you some of her clothes as she took the soggy clothes from you. You both sat silently in her room while you dressed.
To fill the silence she talked, it was mostly about her brother, it was clear he meant a lot to her. He was clearly her role model. She kept talking about things he taught her, like how to throw punches or even curse words!
As Rebecca spoke one thing was very obvious about her- she absolutely despised the fact that her brother had a new fling every week. She talked in disdain about how he would always introduce her to some new Jean Harlow wannabe, in her words they were “Jean Harlow’s leftover curls”
After a long while of chatting and giggling, you realised that you had to go. You were dry now and so were the clothes. The rain had also stopped but it looked as if though it might start again.
Another reason was that your mother always got angry when you arrived late, and you weren’t in the mood to face her today.
So you unfortunately packed your bags, Rebecca was still talking about whatever she could think of but she was eyeing the clothes with a hint of wonder.
Once you left her complex you felt sadness creep into you. You didn’t even really know her but she was better than all the other “friends” your parents forced you to befriend. For the first time in a while, someone made you feel like you belonged, but you knew your parents wouldn’t approve of her, so you had to leave her behind.
Unbeknownst to you this wouldn’t be the last time you met Rebecca Barnes.

Those study sessions you once longed to have, went from two hours every Saturday to nonexistent. However for some reason, you kept going to the Library every Saturday in hopes he would just magically appear, sometimes he was there, just reading his book in the corner furthest away from all the students. You would periodically catch him looking at you but as quickly as it happened he would look away.
Occasionally Lily and her friends were in the Library while you were and you tried acting like you didn’t see them, but Lily being the absolute angel she was, would always come over and ask if you wanted to study with them. You know she was only trying to be friendly but you also saw the pity in her gaze and you couldn’t stand it. You hated feeling like a charity case so you always declined her offer.
You always felt bad when she gave you that look of disappointment when you declined, since Remus started avoiding you, you started avoiding him and his friends, Lily included. You loved hanging out with her, you really did, she was always so sweet and had a sharp wit. But every time you were hanging out she somehow brought up Remus.
Another big change that happened in your life due to Remus Lupin leaving it, was the fact that your grades plummeted. All those Saturdays you spent practicing Charms were practically useless now. Your grades had dropped again, went from an Acceptable to a Foul, even worse than a Dreadful.
Professor Flitwick had a grimace on his face every time he gave you back a test, an essay or a graded practical exam. He would give you a pitying smile every time he handed you back your tests and you hated the way Remus went about his day. Talking happily with Lily about how both of them got yet another Outstanding.
Goodness, you wish you could hate him for it. Hate him for kissing you and leaving, hate him for ignoring you and acting like it’s your fault. Hate him for being such a prick. But for some reason… some unknown, sick, twisted reason, you couldn’t. You never could.
You faintly hear someone clear their throat and call your name. You look up and see Professor Flitwick standing next to your desk, “Another word after class?” He asked, breaking you out of your thoughts and you could merely timidly nod.
Now here you were again… the same place that started all this nonsense, Professor Flitwick’s classroom. “I see you and Mr. Lupin are ehm… not studying together anymore.” You let out a sigh but nod, “I won’t pry but you need to get these grades up. Like I said, I don’t want you to fail the year just because of a squabble. Maybe try asking Miss Evans for help, I know you two are friends. Or perhaps… no, not Mr Potter… ehm… Miss Meadowes? What about Mr. Brookes? He’s a Ravenclaw boy, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind helping you.” Flitwick rambles on. Wanting this all to end you quickly agree to ask Brookes for help and rush to leave his classroom.
Now to find the Ravenclaw boy to try and get Flitwick off your back.
Making your way to the Great Hall you scan the Ravenclaw table and spot him, Oliver Brookes. Beater for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. Pretty popular, and reasonably nice too.
“Oliver. Can we talk?” you question him once you near him and he quickly nods and gets up to follow you. Walking out of the hall you look over at the Gryffindor table and make eye contact with Remus. His eyes were more tired than usual and he looked a bit sluggish, but he frowned as he saw you and Brookes. You shake your head in disbelief and look away from him.
“Look, I really, really need help with Charms. Think you might be able to tutor me for a bit?” And as much as you hate to admit it you begged for his help and eventually he gave in.
So here you were, studying in the courtyard on an early Sunday morning. You don’t know what’s wrong with the boy, it’s almost winter and he wants to study in the courtyard. At 8 am? On a Sunday?
But as much as you would’ve liked to say no, you knew you couldn’t. You needed his help… a lot.
Oliver was… nice enough, a bit narcissistic but not that bad. He was no Remus but perhaps that was a good thing. Other than boasting a bunch, he was easy to talk to, and kind of attractive, not as nice looking as Remus but he had nice brown hair and green eyes that sparkled as he talked. He was well-built and had a nice smile, but unfortunately, he flirted with every girl he saw who walked by.
After a few weeks of him tutoring you your grades did start gradually improving. It was slow progress but progress nonetheless.
Olive has now taken to flirting with you, carrying your books for you sometimes, passing notes in the few classes you shared. You thought it was sweet until he asked you to go to Hogsmeade with him, then reality came crashing down and you realised that as much as you enjoyed his playful flirting you didn’t see him romantically. You couldn’t tell him this of course, he would stop tutoring you then, you knew he wouldn’t be able to handle a bruised ego, so you had to go along with it.
That’s how you got here, walking aimlessly around Hogsmeade as Oliver talked your ear off about how he was planning on wiping out Hufflepuff in the next Quidditch game.
He rambled on and on about one thing or another and you merely nodded or mumbled an occasional ‘oh yeah?’ He usually wasn’t this bad of company…
He all but dragged you to Spintwitches Sporting Needs, going on and on about a new broom they had and you just had to see it.
This was the most boring date you have ever been on and without even noticing you looked for a certain brown-haired boy in the crowd. Every boy with a mop of disheveled brown hair you tried to get a peek at, but none were him.
Eventually and much to Oliver’s dismay, you ended up in Tomes and Scrolls. You browse the shelves but secretly you hoped Remus would be in here. After a few minutes, Oliver started complaining and you begrudgingly left.
You thought that going to The Three Broomsticks would make you feel better but it turns out sipping on a Butterbeer was much less appealing when someone was babbling about something dumb the whole time. Unfortunately, that was all Oliver ever did, he never stopped talking, and he definitely never stopped talking about himself either.
If this date could get any worse you suddenly heard the obnoxious laughter of Sirius Black and the sound of the door of the inn opening.
In walked James Potter enthusiastically telling a story, a laughing Sirius, an annoyed-looking Remus and a confused-looking Peter.
None of them seemed to notice you, for now at least. You try to hide behind Oliver so they can’t see you but alas today wasn’t your lucky day.
Remus spotted you, he frowned as he looked between you and Oliver but then he quickly looked away again as Sirius started talking to him.
At least now you had something entertaining to do while Oliver rambled, you studied Remus’s features. The way he rolls his eyes as Sirius most likely tells him some dumb story, look at the way his eyes crinkle when he laughs, the way he always fiddles with his jumpers when anxious or bites his lips to the point where they oftentimes bleed.
Just as you were staring at Remus you heard Oliver call your name. “Let’s go, I’m bored.” He huffs and you glance down at your half-drunk Butterbeer. “Can’t we wait just a bit? I’m not done yet..” he groans as you ask that and lets out a pissy ‘fine.’
After a few minutes, Oliver abruptly stands up. “I’m going, you gonna come or not?” The audacity of this boy, you thought. “Sure… Let’s go then.” Gripping your waist he pulls you out of the inn and while walking out you once again make eye contact with Remus. He quickly looks away, acting as if you didn’t exist… acting like he didn’t kiss you and confuse you, acting like this wasn’t all his fault.
How. Dare. He.
This was his damn fault in the first place! If he didn’t act like a toddler you wouldn’t have needed a new tutor in the first place!
In a fit of anger, you grab Oliver’s face and kiss him fiercely. Keeping your eyes open you lock eyes with Remus and you can see the subtle anger in his gaze but also the slight hurt.
Pulling away Oliver proudly puffs out his chest and pulls you closer, happily walking out of the inn.
Once outside the crisp winter air hits your face and you shudder, Oliver looks at you then frowns, he grabs his jacket from his bag. He had some decency you must admit, you saw him pulling out his jacket, thinking he was going to give it to you. But no, instead he just put it on himself. “Glad I brought this,” he mumbles, you sigh internally. "Yeah... real lucky."
As you go to start walking back to the castle the door opens, revealing an angry-looking Remus.
“Can we talk, real quick?” He says with a flat tone and you go to respond but Oliver beats you to it, “Nah mate, we’re busy, you can talk to her later.” Remus’s glare intensifies, “I wasn’t asking you, prick.” He replied angrily, his Welsh accent shining through.
You can see Oliver’s face go red with anger but as he steps forward Remus merely cocks an eyebrow at him mockingly. “What? You wanna fight me?” Remus asked with an amused yet annoyed tone. “Yeah, c'mon mate, you can’t just come over here and ruin our date.” Oliver comes closer to him.
“Oliver, stop.” You huff in annoyance, “Let me talk to him. It’ll be five minutes, tops.” Oliver stares at you with a look of disgust, “No. No, we are on a date you can’t just go off with another guy.” “Oliver please, I won’t be long-“ he interrupts you. “Nah, fuck you. Never wanted to go on a date with you in any way! And good luck finding a new tutor, no one’s going to want to tutor your dumb ass.” Remus suddenly lunges forward and grabs him by the collar. You don’t hear what he says but you can visibly see Oliver pale. As Remus lets go of his collar Oliver immediately takes off running.
You let out a soft chuckle, and shake your head. “Idiot,” you grumble, and you can hear Remus let out a huff.
After a brief moment of silence, Remus looks at you and nods off in a direction you two should start walking in.
You walk side by side together in silence for what feels like an eternity until you reach a quieter part of Hogsmeade.
You find a nearby bench to sit at, the atmosphere is quiet, and only faint mumbling can be heard coming from the village. The ground was covered in a small layer of snow and the sun was almost about to set. You can hear Remus digging through his pocket, pulling out another cigarette and quickly lighting it, he takes a few drags, and you can smell the faint smoke.
He clears his throat, “Look, uhm, about the kiss…” “It’s fine, it was just a silly heat of the moment thing. It meant nothing, already forgotten you know?” You ramble and stand up to leave but he grabs your arm, holding it in a firm yet gentle grip. “Please. Just… just let me talk,” he softly begs and looks into your eyes with a pleading expression.
You let out a puff of air but nod, looking at him expectantly. He gives you a weak smile, “I messed up okay, I know I did. I was an idiot. I don’t know why I ran. I guess I was scared of your rejection. Or scared of what you would think of me…” “Remus…” you sigh, “I liked it you know,” you say after a beat of silence and he looks up at you.
Inhaling a puff of smoke from his cigarette he speaks again, “I wanted to talk to you sooner, I just… I was horrified.” “That isn’t a viable reason to just ignore me, Remus. You made me feel like everything was my fault! Like if I hadn’t opened my mouth you would’ve still talked to me.”
“I know, I know… I fucked up and I’m sorry… really sorry.” He explained with a pained voice. You stare him down, taking in his pretty features, he looks less tired today than he did the day Oliver asked you to Hogsmeade. “Consider yourself forgiven.” once he hears those words he lets out a chuckle. “Thanks.” He uttered, biting his lip.
“So…” you say quietly and he looks at you, “So…” he says back. “Uhm… what’s going on between us.” Remus looks at you as you say this, “Nothing,” he mutters and you frown, “Nothing? What do you mean nothing? We kissed Remus!” you exclaim in a fit of anger.
“We can’t date.” he explained standing up, ready to leave, “And why the hell not?” You question him, stepping in front of him to stop him from leaving. “Cause… you’re too good for me.” “What?!” you ask incredulously, “Are you high right now Remus? What are you on about?”
He says your name with a sigh, “There are things you don’t know about me, things that would make you scream in horror.” “Yeah right, your secret’s probably that you steal Potter’s food or something!” You argue.
“Listen to me, if you knew what I was, who I was, you wouldn’t like me.” he says with an exasperated tone and you scoff “How about you let me decide that for myself Lupin?” He frowns at the use of his last name.
“You won’t like that part of me,” he warns and you roll your eyes, “You’re a right git if you think there’s anything I don’t like about you Lupin. I like you, that’s that. All of you. Nothing is going to scare me off.”
He goes to argue but you stop him, “No, you don’t get to decide for me, I decide what I want to do with my own life. Now do you like me or not?”
“Well, yes but you must understand-“ you interrupt him, “There’s nothing more to it, I like you, you like me, now stop being an idiot and kiss me.” He stands in shock for a bit, before he stubs out his cigarette and steps closer to you.
Once he’s near enough he cups your face and tilts it up so he can look you in the eyes. He examines your face, making sure you want to kiss him. You can sense his hesitation, “We don’t have all day Remus.” And with that he softly kisses you, gently holding your face as you grab onto his sweater to keep him close.
Stepping closer to you he cups your face and tilts it up so he can look you in the eyes. He examines your face, making sure you actually want to kiss him. You can sense his hesitation, “We don’t have all day Remus.” And with that he softly kisses you, gently holding your face as you grab onto his jacket to keep him close.
You kiss for what feels like an eternity, and you engrave every part of him into your memory. How he smells like black coffee and parchment and smoke. How he carefully holds your face, how soft his somewhat chapped lips feel and how he tastes like cigarettes, how warm he is in contrast to the chilly weather, how gentle he’s being with you.
Once the two of you pull back he pulls you closer and into his side so he can keep you warm and you both start walking back to the busier streets of Hogsmeade. “Does this mean we’re dating?” Remus laughs at your question, but he smiles, “If you want it to,” he says softly. “I do.” “Then we’re dating,” he says and squeezes your hip as you pass a few shops on your walk back towards the castle.

The following few weeks were the best of your life, for one Remus had been tutoring you every Saturday, sometimes even during the week and secondly your Charms grades have drastically improved. I mean with Remus’s help you were now finally able to cast a near-perfect disillusionment charm. Your grades went from a Dreadful to an Acceptable and you could see it bright as day that even Professor Flitwick was proud of you.
You and Remus still weren’t super close friends or anything but it was an improvement from where you were a while back. Now he would give you a quiet ‘hello’ in the halls or sometimes the occasional smile. It was progress and you were eager to become his friend.
Professor Flitwick had recently given out an essay about the leg-locker curse and was now handing out the graded essay, he gave you a small smile as he passed you, your essay and he gave you a nod and walked away. Your eyes widened, your first ever O! You never thought you would ever get an Outstanding in Charms! You look over at Remus and he gives you a small well-done-smile.
Once the bell rings all the students filter out of the classroom and as you leave the class you see Lily and Remus waiting for you. That was another bonus that came from Remus tutoring you, you and Lily have become unlikely friends. She occasionally stopped by during your study sessions or even filled in and helped you when Remus couldn’t. And you really liked spending time with her, she was brilliant and had a fiery passion for everything she did.
“Well? How did you do?” Lily asks impatiently, you let out a chuckle and pull out your essay to show the two of them. They both let out surprised little gasps and you laugh at their shocked faces. “Om my goodness! Well done! I’m so proud of you!” Lily exclaimed and grabbed you into a bone-crushing hug. After pulling away you see Remus give you a cute smile and then you hear him.
“Oh, my precious Lilyflower!” James calls dramatically, he is holding a bouquet of Lilies in all different colours and he has gotten her a box of elderberry candies, you immediately see Lily visibly groan in disappointment beside you as she spots James. Remus lets out a laugh as he sees her look of annoyance, “Good luck with this,” he mocks her, and she glares at him. “Did you help plan this?! ‘Cause if you did, so help me Remus John Lupin, I will end you.” She threatens him dramatically, Remus chuckles and puts up his hands in mock surrender, whilst shaking his head.
Remus gestures with his head that he is leaving and you nod and follow him, leaving a mortified Lily alone with an extremely happy James. As soon as you are out of sight Remus sighs and lets out a laugh, “She gonna kill me later,” and you look at him and smile, “I would too, leaving her with the boy that’s been crushing on her for years, I would be pretty pissed as well.” Remus shrugs, “She’ll forgive me eventually,” Remus teases, and you laugh at his reasoning.
After walking for several minutes you realise Remus was leading you to the old wooden bridge. After a bit of walking, he comes to a stop and simply gazes out at the greyish Scottish mountains. It was nearly winter, as most of the trees had already lost most of their leaves, turning the landscape into a dullish colour. The wind was howling, the air was starting to become chillier and the days shorter, you instinctively wrapped your scarf around your neck tighter and Remus dug around in his pocket before pulling out a cigarette. You frown and look up at him, “Since when did you smoke?” “A while now, it’s a nasty habit I know, but I can’t seem to shake it.” He mutters and lights it taking a few puffs as you two stand shoulder to shoulder. You couldn’t help but stare at his lips while he smoked, the occasional swirls of smoke coming from his lips were mesmerizing to look at, and so were the many scars that were littered across his hands.
He offers you the cigarette but you give a shake of your head and he nods and takes another drag. After a brief moment of silence Remus speaks up. “I won’t be able to tutor you on Saturday, I have… things to attend to,” he says softly while fiddling with the sleeves of his sweater. You couldn’t help the pang of disappointment that ran through you but you nod, “I could ask Lily to help you,” he quickly says and you shake your head no. “It’s fine, we aren’t writing tests soon so I have plenty of time to practice.” After that, the conversation stops for a while
You don’t know how long both of you stood in silence, just looking at the scenery, when he spoke up. “How’d you do in Potions?” He mutters. You smile at his awkwardness, “Eh, alright, got a bad partner and we messed up by stirring it wrong, might have to ask that great tutor of mine for some help with potions,” you tease with a slight blush. Remus laughs, “Oh yeah, I heard the guy’s a total catch, but I think he may start asking for payment.” He says sarcastically, you nod, “Oh? And here I thought he was doing it out of the goodness of his heart. But he is most definitely a really great guy, he’s got these really nice eyes, and a really cute Welsh accent that sometimes slips out, when he’s angry.” Remus’s ears go a dusty pink shade and he chuckles awkwardly, “Yeah? I heard he’s a bit of a bore though… got some nasty scars and troubles walking…” he says with a self-deprecating tone. You give him a soft smile as you sense his unease.
“The scars look cool though, they make him look unique, and it adds to his charm. He’s all sweet and smart but with a bit of a mean streak you know and a knack for deceiving people, and so what if he sometimes has to use a cane and has horrible handwriting that I always struggle to read? It’s charming I’d say.” Remus looks stunned at what you said but nods slowly, then clears his throat, looking away from you. He avoids your gaze his eyes flitting around in a panic, he lets out a breath. You both stand in an uncomfortable silence before you break it. “Remus, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or anything, I just thought that you needed some reassurance or-“ Before you can get another word out, Remus stops your rambling by pressing a soft, gentle kiss to your lips, almost as if he’s afraid of hurting you. Your heart is pounding so much you can barely hear the howling of the wind, you feel like you could die right about now.
Before you can fully enjoy the kiss and melt into him, he pulls away, you can see the way his brownish-green eyes nervously flit around your face. His breathing is irregular but you can smell the faint hint of coffee and parchment coming from him. He pulls away and runs a hand through his messy hair and he clears his throat while you stand there and dumbly stare at him. He clears his throat and mumbles a quick ‘sorry’ before rushing off. Leaving you standing there on the bridge alone.

Dreadful… of course, you got a Dreadful for your Charms essay, you could hardly ever perform the incantations correctly, much less perform the spells, every time you tried to cast a spell you saw Professor Flitwick’s eyes go wide in fear.
You can feel his pitiful gaze on you and avoid his eyes, instead, you look around the classroom, your gaze landing upon Remus Lupin, chatting wildly with his hands as he talks to Lily. The redhead was eagerly nodding along and you smiled subconsciously at how excited Remus was, if only you were half as good at Charms as he was, perhaps you would get an Acceptable or maybe even an Outstanding. You were pretty sure he got an Outstanding for every single subject, Merlin, he was amazing in Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, DADA, everything. To top it all off he was a prefect, the model student, the child every parent wishes they had, but behind the fake smiles he gave to all his Professors, he had a sharp tongue, a sharp wit about him with a knack for planning very intricate pranks.
“Ahem-“Professor Flitwick clears his throat and softly says your name as he stops at your table. “May we have a word after class? I need to speak to you about something important,” he asked quietly over the loud murmuring of students and you nodded. “Right then!” He says as he walks on over to the front of the classroom. ”On with the lesson, today we’ll be learning about-” Professor Flitwick’s voice droned on and your mind wandered. You looked back over to where Remus sat, only to find him looking at you, he offered a small smile and turned his attention back to Flitwick. Goodness, he was perfect, pretty eyes, a pretty face too, pretty messy brown hair, and scars that littered his body, even when having to occasionally walk with a cane he was majestic.
The clocktower bell rang and suddenly all the students began packing away their belongings, rushing to be the first out of class so that they could arrive at lunch first. You stood up and waited for most students to leave and then approached Professor Flitwick. “You wanted to speak to me professor?” you asked timidly, “Ah, yes!” He says with a warm smile, ”You see I’ve noticed that you’re starting to struggle with Charms more than usual. I would never want one of my students to struggle, as much as I would love to help you myself I’m much too busy so I thought you could try asking one of your classmates to help you. We have many students who are amazing at Charms, like perhaps Miss Evans, Miss Meadowes, Mr. Potter or maybe even Mr. Lupin. I wouldn’t want you to fail the year just because of one class, especially not when I can do something about it.” he said warmly and you nodded. “Now off you go, go enjoy lunch, I heard we’re getting some pie!” he says happily and you grab your belongings and leave the classroom.
Failing Charms… you sigh, you couldn’t fail Charms, what type of witch or wizard fails Charms? But who would ask for help? Dorcas? No, you barely know her. Lily? You sigh, also no… you’ve only briefly exchanged smiles in the hall. James… you’d rather not. That only leaves Remus, awkward but very good-looking Remus, the same Remus that makes you stumble over your words like an idiot. You would most definitely embarrass yourself in front of him. That wouldn’t end well… but you desperately needed help and he was amazing at Charms. Fine, you would ask for him to tutor you.
Walking down towards the Great Hall, you spot Lily, Mary and Remus all talking. You take a deep breath, this is it, you speed up a bit, trying to catch up with them. Over the chatting of students, you can very clearly hear Lily complaining about something James said to her. “Remus?” you ask quietly once you are close enough, Lily abruptly stops her story and gives you a small smile as all three turn to face you. “Could I talk to you privately? Just for a second it won’t take long, I promise,” you ramble and he nods, waving bye to Lily and Mary as they walk away.
“I was just wondering since I know you always do amazing in Charms, if there was any way that you would help tutor me? Just this once!” you add nervously, your cheeks a soft red colour. You were too nervous to meet his eyes but you could feel his hand on your shoulder, he gave it a soft squeeze and he nodded, “Of course, I’ll tutor you, why wouldn’t I?” He asks with a warm smile, but you didn’t miss the faint pink colour of his ears. “Would this Saturday be fine? At around ten thirty at the Library?” He proposed, you felt like you couldn’t speak so you just awkwardly nodded and then excused yourself to go have lunch, leaving him alone. Curse your awkwardness, you finally speak to him and all you can get out is a bit of rambling and a nod then you run off like a coward.
Early Saturday morning comes and it’s a perfect day, it was softly raining outside, covering the Scottish mountains in a thick layer of mist. Most of your roommates had left already, but you had slept in a bit, since you were tired from staying up late last night practicing some spells, hoping to get some of them right to impress Remus, but it took longer than you would like to admit and still you were embarrassingly horrible at all of them. Yawning you look at the clock on your bedside table.
Shit.
Oh shit.
You scrambled out of bed, it was almost 10 am, and you not only missed breakfast but at this point, you were gonna be late for your study date- no, study session with Remus! You hurriedly dress, trying to at least pick a somewhat decent outfit, you still want to look nice for your study session. As you finish you quickly grab your wand and Charms textbooks and take off running.
You were running as quickly as you could, trying to avoid as many teachers and prefects as to not get told off for running in the halls. You reach the castle kitchens and tickle the pear on the painting and it swings open, revealing the kitchens that were filled with many house elves now starting to prepare lunch, you grab some breakfast for yourself as well as a sweet treat for Remus, or well sweet treats, since there were so many options and you couldn’t decide what to pick. You hoped this would make up for being late and you leave in a hurry and nearly sprint to the library.
Heaving you reach the library and open the giant doors, your senses as flooded with the scent of old books, many students are lounging about, reading a book or studying. You scan the library hoping to find Remus, but you can’t seem to find him. You start walking through the library to try and find him and after a bit of searching you find him at one of the tables in the far back corner of the library, one where you have a perfect view of the bits of sunrays highlighting his features, wait no, you meant where you could perfectly see the beautiful autumn landscape and hear the soft rain.
Clearing your throat you walk closer, he looks up and smiles at you. He was wearing one of his classic sweaters, that highlighted his face so well, and his hair was unruly but he looked perfect in your eyes, you could stare at him forever- Remus awkwardly clears his throat and your cheeks go red, damn it, he caught you staring, hopefully, you could play the flush off as the cold.
“I am so sorry I’m late! I overslept and missed breakfast and had to run to the kitchens all while trying to avoid any teachers and-“ you ramble, trying to explain yourself hoping that he wouldn’t be too upset with your tardiness but you were cut off by a soft chuckle coming from him. “It’s okay don’t even worry about it, I was actually worried I was gonna be the late one. I had to help the boys with something last minute and well, it took longer than expected,” he says kindly and accepts the sweet treat you offer to him. “Another prank?” you ask, hoping to make small talk to make this less awkward. He merely shrugs and gives a mischievous smile, you narrow your eyes at him but decide not to bug him about it. You take out the sweet treats you got him and give them to him and his eyes light up slightly, “For being late,” you say hurriedly. He lets out a chuckle and reaches for one, and for a brief moment his scarred hand meets yours and you could swear the world stopped. Your breath hitches and your heart starts pounding and you pull your hand away.
Sitting down you take out your textbooks, you take a deep breath to calm down, but Remus looks unfazed. “So what do you need help with, any spell in specific or just overall?” he inquires as he takes out his wand, you sigh “Just… everything really, I’m really bad at Charms for some reason. Can’t get the stupid spells to work right!” You complain and he listens carefully nodding as you speak. Why did he have to be such an attentive listener, he’s making it very hard for you to speak properly.
“How about we start with something simple then? What about Descendo?” he asks while you flip to the page containing the spell, taking a deep breath, “Descendo!” You say confidently and a faint blue light comes out of your wand and hits a bookshelf, causing all the books to come flying off the shelves and hitting the ground with a large thud. You go red and sink into your seat, wanting to disappear as Remus softly chuckles and you look across the room to meet the angry glare of Madam Pince. Remus being as sweet as ever quickly waves his wand and all the books levitate to their original position. “Sorry,” you say quietly, avoiding eye contact with him. “Nothing a bit of practice can’t fix,” he insisted warmly.
You and Remus spent the next two hours, working on many different spells, also telling a few jokes and stories in between, the hours flew by and you were dreading having to say goodbye. “Can I try one last Charm? Professor Flitwick said we should study up on this one,” you show him the spell you are referring to in your textbook. “Disillusionment Charm? Of course, but it’s quite tricky to perform,” he cautioned. He quickly performed the spell, causing himself to almost completely disappear, you could only notice his outline if you looked hard enough and then he transformed himself back. “Hard you say? How come you can do it perfectly then?” you tease. “Had some practice with the spell, very useful for sneaking around when you should be in bed.” he shrugs with a smile.
Taking a breath and focusing you quickly perform the spell, the white light coming out of your wand hit the table and went rogue, bouncing off the walls and finally hitting a fourth-year student’s head. In an instant their head disappeared, their friends gasped and started freaking out and screaming, and your eyes went wide. Looking to Remus he was toppled over the table laughing, and that was enough to ease your nerves and you soon joined in on laughing.
“Out! Out of my library! Now!” Madam Pince’s shrilly voice booms. While laughing you had missed the angry glare of Madam Pince and you hadn’t noticed her stalking her way towards you. Looking up at the sound of her voice, you look to Remus and you both quickly grab your belongings and leave the library still giggling about the situation.
Once the library was out of sight and you both had calmed down you turned to him, looking up at him and noticing the small smile he had on his face. “Thank you for all of your help, I really appreciate it!” he only nods and then starts speaking, “When are you available again?” You frown at his words and he must notice your puzzled expression because he starts explaining again, “I still need to help you with the Disillusionment charm, and we haven’t practiced all the spells yet,” his ears were turning a faint red colour. “Next Saturday? Same time?” you asked and he nodded. “Sounds good,” he assured and you smiled back, and in a haze of confidence you leaned up and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, his eyes widened and his ears went redder. “I’ll see you later then.” You say and quickly walk away from him, cheeks flushed, surprised at your own confidence but giddy at the prospect of another study session with him.
