I must say, Steven Universe is a lot more enjoyable when you don't need to read through a heaping helping of Tumblr discourse about who's secretly abusing whom this week.

Ok so this is really vague and based off my admittedly bad memory, but I remember reading somewhere that one of the original reasons turf war became a thing was because inklings and octolings, especially when they're young but also just overall, are an intrinsically and instinctually highly violent species and play-fights like that help them blow off steam. I have NO idea where this shit came from or why it's been a piece of the lore in my head for years, but I'm not great at lore digging- is there any indication of this in like, the art books or games or something, or is this just 14-year-old me making personal canon and forgetting it wasn't real? I would like to uh. Resolve the mental confusion 😅 have a nice day :]
Inoue: Rather than starting as a sport, Turf Wars started from the instinctive territorial conflict of Inklings with forcibly added rules and regulations. So it can’t be helped. Amano: Being that it’s in their instincts, if they don't do battle, a real war will break out. --Is that the kind of story this is? Amano: By letting them engage in Turf Wars, their combative instincts are kept at bay. --I didn't know it was such an important thing...
Famitsu, March 2018
that should answer your question!
